World Straight Pool Updates from New Jersey

Ignacio Chavez

Congratulations to Ignacio El Mago Chavez for a great showing at this tournament of fantastic straight pool players. Although he doesn't get mentioned much, his fans are proud.

Totally. This caught me by surprise, because he seemed otherwise like a very respectful opponent. When he beat Toastie last night, I actually was under the impression that he needed 2 or 3 balls when he won. I only knew he won because of his 100+ dB scream.

I hope Neils wins the whole thing. I played him one time about five years ago and since then, every time we pass each other, he calls me by my name. That's pretty impressive; he really seems like a great guy.

Also, I'm not a fan of Nick VanDenBerg yelling in his opponents' faces when he beats them. I saw him do it a few nights ago to Babica and then I heard he did it again when he beat Thorsten. I don't care how happy you are, you should act like a gentleman. Nobody wants to get beat and have to listen to a primal scream to boot.

I am checking that site for updates too... Your from Holland? Who's your pick for the win?

Don't know the language though, but I reckognize some words so often I can still understand the meaning of the posts :D Seems that the language is a kind of combination of English, German and Norwegian (Scandinavian).

I'm rooting for Niels too. I've known him for quite some time but never played him until this tournament. My brother came to watch me play and got to watch Niels instead. My brother knows how I play and told me after the match "You weren't going to beat that guy. He looks incapable of losing."

Niels didn't play well against Schmidt from what I saw but still advanced. If you play a bad one and are still in it's usually a good sign. Niels is also a really nice guy so I'm pulling for him to win.

I don't really mind who wins, I hope the one that wins this match will win the next one as well ;)

I agree with you Chris. After doing the commentary on his 14.1 runs at DCC, I went back and watched a lot of video that I had of him that I have collected over the years. He has gotten stronger every single year - collecting Euro 14.1 titles, The Challenge of Champions, The Skins, and the DCC 9 ball title.

I was surprised to see he had never won a World Title.

He has been my pick to win this tournament all along, although Nick VDB has been hitting the balls well all year and has been tough all this week.

Both are great champion calibre players - but admittedly I have to give Nick the edge here. He has been so consistent all week long. Nick also leads the Azbilliards high run challenge - and if his number (285) stands he will be the first person to take that title away from John Schmidt who has won it the past two years with a 245 and a 403.

I don't think any of the remaining 4 players have won a world title. It'll be nice for whoever wins to get it.

I know, especially Busty - I remember when he finished 2nd in the World 9 Ball - just days after the death of his infant daughter - he was somehow able to channel all of that emotion into his game... he is an unbelievably mentally strong player and person. It would be great to see him raise the trophy.

Like I said in my last post, Nick has been playing awesome this week. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull through.

When it comes to 14.1, Niels just isn't human. He is a friggin machine. It would be great to see him win the world title - and if he does, it is too bad Joe Kerr won't be able to see it.

If Jasmin wins, it would be awesome - and it will definitely get widespread media attention. She is a great player and she proves that gender is not an issue in 14.1 - or any game for that matter.

Chris...It was already mentioned that Bustamante won a Camel event (IIRC, in 1996). That tournament had all the top players in the world (at that time), and imo is just as much a 'world championship' as this event.
