World Straight Pool Updates from New Jersey

Roy...I don't think I ever mentioned 9-ball. There are world champions in all the games...and LONG before the WPA.

Yes, you mentioned especially 9-ball...

Read post #740... there you reply to a poster who said none of the 4 players in the semifinals are World Champions.

You then came up with the Camel-event in 1996 won by Bustamante.

The way I see it you tried to say that Bustamante was a World Champion in 9-ball, or atleast should be considered so because of his win. That is what I am discussing in this thread...

No Roy...I never mentioned 9-ball. You maybe don't know, but the Camel events of the 90's played 8-ball, 9-ball & 10-ball. I think Busty won an 8-ball event. I'm not going to argue with you over semantics. I don't believe the WPA is the end/all-be/all for tournament pool...especially since they steadfastly refuse to recognize or honor past champions of our sport.

nothing to do with ego

Scott,

Nothing to do with my ego, way too many years of track record to argue against. As I said in my first post, I genuinely don't understand why men are or should be better at pool particularly at this point when the top women have been honing their skills for decades. However the fact remains that as wholes men are substantially better than women at pool.

There is some scientific backing for this but I don't think it is significant enough to justify the spread. I also don't think that the lack of women players is still a valid explanation. Perhaps it is a combination of a lot of minor factors. I don't claim to know and I have argued in the past that women should be as good as men playing pool. They are not and I don't see this changing in the foreseeable future. That means it takes a truly exceptional woman player to win a major men's event. That may not be PC when we try to pretend that all people are equal in all things but it is fact borne out by way too many years of mixed play to seriously consider differently.

I believe women should be equal. However I don't argue with sign posts and I don't argue with all of the past history of pool either.

Sorry Hu, but that is your male ego talking. There is no physical limitation that prevents any woman from playing as well (or better) than any man. Some people mistakenly think that since women are generally not as strong as men, that the break is a problem. It's not...the break is all about timing, and has nothing to do with physical strength. The only consideration is that women have not played as long, against top competition, as the men have. That will be equalized someday. I hope I live to see it.

I have asked that question many times. Why are men, for the most part, stronger players than women.
My only conclusion is the ratio. There are MANY more men players. The pool of men is much larger, so hence there are more "cream of the crop".
Lets say there are 200 men who are the top players in the world, versus maybe 25 women and thats just an estimate.
The only other thing is maybe the break. Men, for the most part, have stronger breaks than the women.
Just my opinion for what its worth.

GO JASMIN!!!!!! IM ROOTING FOR YOU!!!!!!

Scott,
I've watched video clips of top 9-ball women players like Alison, Karen and Gerda play in the IPT. In general, the female players who played in the IPT do appear to have a noticeably softer 8-ball break compared to their male counterparts.

When breaking racks, do men somehow have "better" timing in 8-ball than the women do so they spread the balls better? IMO, there may be another intangible factor besides timing that accounts for the differences between men and women on the 8-ball break.

I read somewhere a few years ago that men play better pool than women because their brains solve problems differently. It said that if you spread 15 balls out on a table for a man, he will shoot the balls in a certain order. Put them in the same place for the woman and she'll run them in a much different order. Are there anyone at the venue who can keep us updated about the Jasmin-Django match?

We have been getting the updates from the forum in the Netherlands now, but I doubt they will update for the other semifinal...

SJM? Juggler314? Anyone?

195-144 to Niels. Nick at the table, but having a time-out right now

Niels missed a breakshot and opened up the table for Nick. Can be exciting end to this semifinal

Your thought seems reasonable and I have voiced the same opinion in the past. However, it doesn't seem to completely answer the question. Just like very small countries produce some of the best in the world, why don't the women from an equally small sampling? Just as a thought, how many Filipino male players are playing on a pro level and how many women are playing?

I have competed against women in sports where they are equal or even have a little edge. As a whole, women have faster reflexes than men and it is an advantage speed shooting. It never bothered me in the least to lose to them or to beat them. They were just fellow competitors. I would like to see them competing equally in pool, I think it would be good for the sport. Somehow it doesn't seem likely to happen.

I don't know who I am rooting for. I would like to see Jasmin win for a lot of reasons but I didn't realize that Bustamonte has never won a world title. I'd very much like to see him with a world title too.

Niels just won 200 - 157. It took less than 4 hours and 10 minutes, not so bad :D

Guess the Jasmin-Bustamante match will start in 15 minutes. But where can we find updates??????

I *knew* I should have stayed overnight at the Hilton to cover the matches!
