World Ten Ball - Will the show go on? Will it be cancelled?

I had hoped to work at this event as a TV commentator, as I had the last two times I traveled to the PI for the WPC. My co-commentators over there both put in a good word for me, and conveyed that my analysis of the matches was helpful to them and a big plus for the commentary team.

Lo and behold a little birdy tells me that Ian Anderson and the WPA got involved in my selection as a commentator. Seems they didn't like some of the criticism I have directed at them. They had "issues" with me. Yen was "informed" that I should not be a member of the commentating team at the WTBC. Appears that part of the "sanction" process also gives the WPA license to chose who they want to talk on the air.

I have since e-mailed Yen for clarification and have not gotten a reply. The silence is deafening! Maybe Ian would like to let me know when he got involved in the selection process for television commentators. I didn't know the WPA was part of the TV production team. You learn something new every day.

I guess they prefer to have plain vanilla commentators who will only offer glowing praise for everyone and everything involved in this event. Sorry Ian, if you want plain vanilla, I'm not your guy. I have and will call it like I see it. If I see injustice or inequities in the pool world, I WILL say something, either through my writing or my speaking. If the playing field isn't level or the rules are getting bent, I'm going to speak up. And if the WPA gets a little to big for their britches, they can get taken down a notch too.

No one owns me Ian, and no one will put words in my mouth. Go on collecting your "sanction" fees and doing your "small man playing the big shot" routine that you do so well. I see who you are clearly now and it isn't pretty. In the states, we would call you a "backstabber". And Yen, whatever respect I had for you, by allowing the WPA to dictate to you, is eroding fast.

Maybe Edwin has a legitimate cripe after all.

Couldn't have been said any better. Never met you before, but you continue to impress me with your honesty, integrity and courage to stand for the truth and for what is right. You will make a lousy politician but will be an outstanding justice of the courts. Had you been a judge, you will be the first one that I know that plays pool. March on brother!!! :clapping:

"Live with dignity, live with respect, leave with a legacy praiseworthy."

Yen Makabenta's reply to email Darren sent to him, after I posted a similar thread on www.pro9.co.uk.

Hi Darren:

Of course, the WTBC is pushing through. The rumors are just misinformation being spread by managers envious of us -- the same guys who boasted about holding the world 9ball championship, only to come up short.

Go to official website: www.worldtenball.com to get the latest news about the WTBC. You will also find there the list of players already qualified for the main draw.

As for other tournaments, there are no other tournaments with substantial prize money in October. But Raya will have a PPT event in November and another in January 2009.

See you in Manila.

Yen

Daryl Peach has called Ian Anderson and Gre Leenders, and both of them have no reason to believe that the event will not happen.

November? Oh Boy, I hope it doesn't coincide with ours or they'll accuse us again of doing an event to coincide with theirs. January is when we have our Nationals to start of the year so they'll .... nevermind we'll get used to it.

Hey Jay!! Sorry you're not a World Champion that deserves a reply. You're a World Champion in my books though.

Darn Jay, I feel your pain.

Can't imagine Star Billiards, Simonis or Brunswick are putting up any cash, I presume the Philippine Depatrment of tourism and the pharmaceutical company are.
Finally, something! But I have to join you in doubting that Star, Simonis and Brunswick put up cash. Also add to that Hotel Sofitel because such companies usually just do X-deals. The pharma is like very minor as a good size of their marketing budget is earmarked for the Pacquiao-dela Hoya fight. I'd say 5M Pesos max. Tourism may be good to a max of 10M. 15-20M to go! Whoops, upfront is usually 50% and the balance in 30-60-90-or 120 days after the event. So, there's now 7.5M minus 100% of the facilitator's fee of 15% so that's 7.5M minus 2.25M (15% of 15M)=5.25M in hand MAX! Ahhh guys...... you need a little over 17M Pesos for the prize money alone. You need 3M for PICC upfront and about 5M for the TV coverage (upfront? most likely) that you advertised in your site.

Next info we need now is the existance of a current Promoter's License, Event Permit and the Special Work Permits from BID for the foreign players.

Aren't you glad that we're helping them with their checklist? That's something positive!

Finally, they have come up with something. That was all that everybody was waiting for... a semblance of money. What a photo finish! Maybe now we can expect TV teasers to the event, as well as newspaper and poster advertising.

Good luck to everybody!

We receive messages of the kind through text messaging. BMPAP agrees that the money earmarked for WPC is still short. Short is 50% short, and Matchroom has been aware of this as there is communication almost on a daily basis.

That is one major difference between Raya and BMPAP -- BMPAP does not officially announce until the project is in one piece... and the negotiating team is upfront about snags that need to be ironed out. That way, nobody gets to play a debt-defying act. No 50%, no WPC. Simple.

If Edwin's interpolations make sense as they seem to, then we offer all the boasting for Yen to gloat on until he solves the rest of the money. No 50%, yes WTB. Simple.

At any rate, the players who will come over will certainly have fun during the event. I think the 50% covers that.

All of the above is based on your GUESS of how much the sponsors are investing, impressive mathematics nevertheless.

Happy Birthday Roy Steffensen - Thanks for this thread ;)

Did you hear back from the venue ?

Cooooorrrrect!!!! I was being nice too going HIGH on the income (sponsor contribution) and LOW on the expenditure!! And still!!! Now do you want the real numbers that I've gathered??

<<<<still hurtin' from all the laughing!! Thanks kidrock!!!

Perry the Pocket and I were just discussing about what is happening and everytime I mentioned about a post in the thread he laughed out heartily. He said he's really just enjoying the competition. He said that in his over 30 years producing shows, he had seen too many suicidal producers who did not know when to cut their losses while they still had their shirts on their backs.

Yes, he said he thinks that the show will go on, with many many more things after that to follow, and that he wouldn't bet a McDonald's burger against Roy.

All I can say is that it's a damn shame that politics derailed the biggest powerhouse country for pool. That's what you get letting your players come over here and talk to ours. We no how to f*** pool up. We're experts. Johnnyt

Yeah go on, enlighten us....

In due time amigo. You just have to go by my generous estimate on the incoming sponsorship money and the low-balled expenditure. As it is, the numbers still don't indicate favorably for them.

The Ticketworld inclusion of the WTBC to their sales schedule and announcement is an easy arrangement since Star Paper is the biggest supplier of paper products to National Bookstore/Ticketworld. Friendship deals with no cash changing hands.

Some interesting development here! A text message from Star offering to bet, to the skeptic forum posters,a Million Pesos that WTBC is going to push through. If the skeptics can't bet then they should shut-up. Really? Well, a 200k bet was offered, because whoever called the bet said he's just a poor guy (poor guy with 200k to spare???!!), as long as they, the WTBC Promoters stick to their announced PICC venue (fully paid of course), the TV coverage of ESPN and Local TV and prize money of US$400,000. Mr. Star Paper just needs to text back yes or no and just meet up with media in attendance when they get face-to-face to pony-up. Well, the yes or no text back hasn't arrived yet. The blowhard thought he can high-roll everybody. LOL LOL!!

No TV or newspaper advertisement of the event yet as that's hard evidence for a commitment. They can always delete all website contents but not retrieve all the newspapers with their ads or announcements.

<<<< 19 days and counting>>>>

Roy,
If a cancellation does occur how about some of those big Norwegian $$$$
from oil and gas revenues comming up with a World Norwegian 10 ball Open for men say $500,000 and why not one for women also for $500,000 as Norway ranks as the 2nd wealthiest country in the world as per capita income??? Now is the chance for Norway to make big headway in the field of Pool via team 147.

I just got an email from Raya Sports about World Ten Ball. I have never sent any email to Raya, so they, or someone in WPA/EPBF, are obviously reading this thread.

Dear Mr. Steffensen,

The World Ten Ball Championship a WPA and Raya Sports event is Definitely on (Sept 23 - Oct 5, 2008) and preparations for it are already in the homestretch. The World Nine-Ball Championship has been cancelled for this year (2008), but that is a different event held by Matchroom.

WPA has already sent invitations to over a hundred players qualified by their respective national federations from the US, Europe, and Asia, Etc.

Qualifiers for independent pool players is set from Sept. 23 to 27, 2008 at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City, Philippine and registration is on - going.

For complete information on the event, we wish to refer you to our website: www.rayasports.com and www.worldtenball.com.

Warmest regards,
SOL GUECO
Raya Sports

I appreciate the email, though I don't understand why they needed to send it just to me. Why not post it here instead? Well, it made me feel a little important, so thanks ;)

Ste: Thanks. No haven't heard from the PICC, but it sure looks like the event will take place though.

However, do they have 400 000 $ in pricemoney to cash out to the players at the end of the tournament? Or will the players get excuses like "FedEx didn't deliver the checks", "Our sponsors haven't paid 100 % yet, but it is nothing wrong, just a small delay. Checks will be in the mail" etc etc.

I REALLY hope this event will push through, be successful, and that no players will be screwed.

I still find it a little strange though that they take the time to search for my emailadress, write an email where they inform me about the event, even though I didn't contact them, but they don't have time/desire to write some press-releases about the event... What would you do if you were in charge of such an event? Write to a nobody from Norway (a country who aren't even represented on the players list), to a guy who will not even be there as spectator, and inform that everything is ok, or inform the masses in the Philippines, trying to get some publicity around the event, making your sponsors happy?

I know what I would have done...

So, I still have a few $$ left to bet on this topic. It looks like the event will push through now, but will we hear any players complain about lack of not getting 100 % of their pricemoney, on time?

The window is still open!
