Worst room you ever went in?

Raytown Rec is a nice room by my standards! Good players, tables are typically in great shape, lots of 9ft gold crowns, no bar. People are there mostly to play pool.

I used to play in Tee Neg's sometimes. Great place on the bayou. Not fancy, maybe a little run down, full of good people including Tee Neg himself. James Burke used to mention him and the place in a lot of his books. Last time I passed by it seemed to be still a pool hall or bar, the non PC name was gone and I'm sure Tee Neg was too. Can't be too sure though. I went to buy a barrel of gas and another of diesel to prep for a hurricane. I mentioned that I used to deal with them fifty years before and they insisted I stop in the office to say hello to the owner, Mrs Ward. A bit over a hundred and still coming to work every day!

I’ve been remiss in visiting New Iberia…been within driving distance several times….and I own most of James Lee Burke’s books.

Yes, at least last I checked. I haven’t been in a few months but most of the GCs and Kling were in good condition when I was there.

I grew up in a pool hall we called
The Shit House. That should sum it up.
I racked many a racks for Sailor Bill Barge where I learned straight pool and 3 cushion.
Many players were frequent visitors. You bet or you didn’t get a game.
Its been closed forever but we still refer to it as The Shit House.
Thank god Petey Margo opened the Golden Cue.

Over the past couple of decades many rooms have closed. Some were all time treasures but for the most part they were dumps and I’m not sad that they are gone.

The worst room I ever went in was in southeast Houston. On the sign it was called fat dats bilards. Not sure why they spelled billiards that way. I was new to the area and was trying to find a place where the wife and I could play. She sat in the car while I scouted it. I walk in and the door was hard to open. The place had two tables one pool table and one carom table. The felt was completely shredded, had stains on it and cigarette ash. There were cigarette burn marks all over the rails. There was a bar to the right as you walk in and the bar tender didn’t have a tooth in his head. He also didn’t even acknowledge that I walked in. On the back wall was a shredded leather couch where a man and a prostitute was passed out. Both looked rough as hell. The floor was sticky can had spots where beer had been spilled but not cleaned up. The lighting was awful. Old flickering fluorescent greenish lights. Some of the tubes were burned out. The place smelled like stale beer, body odor and cigarette smoke. The balls on the table were gashed all up and bleached out. I went back to the car and my wife asked me how was it to which I replied you don’t want to know let’s just move on.

So the question is: what was the worst room you have ever experienced? Describe it.
too many to remember....

Sorry to hear this. I went several times ten years ago and would have been delighted to have it as my home room.
It's just fine. There are plenty of homeless in the area, but they stay out of the pool room. The tables could be cleaner, but they play just fine. The place is packed nightly and CooCoo may be the only one I've heard describe it as "the worst room". It looks old compared to the two best rooms in the Phoenix area (Main Street and Dozers), but it's a great room.

I went into Felt today in Denver. I lived here for about 6 months maybe 8-9 years ago and it was one of my favorite rooms ever. Today I played for maybe half an hour and then left. The tables were dirty, the balls were dirty, the cloth was in terrible shape... I was so disappointed. Even the bartender lady told me I should go to Piazza's if I want to play good players.

Well the other Worst in Phoenix are closed, Alexander's, & Golden Eight-ball, see zero reason not to keep a business up unless you want it to fail. Yes my standard are higher then many, but I do go out of my way to go to hell holes, or places with large homeless populations in their parking lost.

Metro Sport Bar is with a mile of BullShooter, they keep it clean, keep the table up, and spend a few bucks in the evening on security, and keep the homeless off their property.

I sort of laughed at the Goole Photo of inside the BullShooters, I am sure that was long ago, can tell from Cars park in front, as parking lot is in need of repair, because of pot holes, and I am not sure even Superman could smell the place from a photo posted on Google

BTW some of those photos are tagged 2011, some later, but few from recent 4 or 5 years..

I knew the New Iberia of fifty years ago pretty well. The cajuns have plenty of gamble and some of the prettiest girls this side of anywhere! In high school and for many years after I found myself in Acadiana many weekends. My best friend's family was from the area and two young men just driving by any kind of family cookout or other gathering could just wave and be invited to stay awhile. We partied from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon many weekends. Being young a few hour nap in the car was often enough.

The people are still friendly and the food is still great. I can't really say that I am more than a passing stranger myself though. I am about fifty miles above New Orleans these days straight up I-55 and a little jog. If you ever find yourself in the area we will have to get together.

I have read most of Burke's Robicheaux books but just pieces of books of his other series, maybe one book. One of those roundtuit things.

This is very sad to hear. I lived in Denver from about 2012-2022. The first 5 years or so, I lived in the Green Mountain area and mainly played at Felt. Haddad, Vidal, Mcdaniel, Silva, ATM, Kiko, etc. were all regulars there and many more solid players. They had a stellar Tuesday night 9ball tourney that was real tough action. Then the last 5 years I lived in Arvada only 5 minutes from Mile High Billiards, so mostly played out of there. Many of the better players gravitated over there. Then Piazzas basically popped up during covid or the tail end of it. Very nice room. Only got to go in there a couple times prior to leaving town. Seemed like many of the better players were regulars there, which kind of makes since with Tony running it. They have a cool Friday night fights series with challenge matches, scotch doubles, and other team tourneys. I always had fond memories of Felt though. I got robbed by ATM the first time I visited...Watched Haddad do some magical things in there. They had the big Nick Varner Pro tourney and Nick Varner Amateur and a bunch of other decent tourneys. Even Haddad would jump in their weekly's sometimes on the bar boxes if he was bored. Was a fantastic rail setup to watch action too above the big tables. Loved the various pocket sized options on the the 9' tables as well. Even played their 14.1 league for a couple years out of there and American Rotation when that was around. I suppose many rooms run their course and don't last forever. It's a shame, but is what it is.

What happened to Kolby’s? Used to be the best action room in Phoenix.

This is RBA aka Richmond Billiards Association: the premier billiards experience in Richmond, Va. This is a "pool room" that opened in the same space as a different pool room that had gone under. The previous spot wasn't perfect but had some 9 foot Gandy Big G's and a room full of Global bar boxes with worsted blue cloth. The previous room was always the host location for stuff like the APA tri and Vegas Cup since it has enough 7ft tables. Anyway, new ownership came on board and knew the huge majority of their customer base was going to be APA and BCA league players and decided to get these absolutely clown shoe looking tables with black napped cloth, blue cushions, heavy oversized cue ball, and poor installation. The table leveling is a little better now but some will still have a slow roll that can drift about a whole diamond over from the intended line so you gotta make sure you fire everything hard as hell. The problem with that is the pocket liners are super hard slippery plastic so your shot will pop out every now and again. Players come from out of town to play tournaments and are like what in the hell is this place? Our league operators basically tell everyone to put a sock in it as far as voicing opinion about the place and that it hurts the owners business when we do. Anyway, the place is a joke
