Would it be possible for a Remake of The Hustler to be good?

Slam Dunk!

Won't be easy, as the best sports movies tend to be about team sports, but, at least in theory, each of these could be redone with the focus on an underdog pool player rather than on the actual main character in the original.

Rocky
The Karate Kid
Breaking Away
Million Dollar Baby

That said, I doubt it would work.

The most obvious movie to remake as a pool movie, "the longest yard".

I guess it depends on a few things. They probably make a good movie for people not familiar with the hustler/non pool players.

I cant imagine them making the movie about straight pool in 2020. Could try and modernize it and tackle things that affect todays players.

What if they make it about a player not from the states where gambling is more prevalent.

Either way pool has 2 great films and thats about it

Cameron britton. hands down. not hard at all. the direction and dialogue is harder to fill than actors
Maybe...as a more "Working Man...type guy". I assumed a little older and dapper. Fine choice. Plus Gleason actually could play so he looked the part. You can almost see a player by the way he picks up and puts down the chalk (Except maybe Mike D. World class talent, C- chalker).

I would love to see a remake of it with Slyvester Stallone as Fat Eddie and Arnold Shartsenegger as Minneapolis Fats, throw a couple of those stinking Kardashians in to really stank it up, and Snoop Dog as the resident meth head and you have a blockbuster.

I've got movie buff friends who've seen me shoot a few shots of pool in a bar. They think I'm amazing, excellent, brilliant, unbeatable, world class, the list goes on and on. I'm not, I'm just any other regular player who knows how to play. They rate The Hustler as one of their favorite movies of all time, despite them not even knowing that a ball needs to hit a rail after contact even though they've played several times in bars against opponents who tell them this. They couldn't give a hoot about pool as it's just not on their radar.

I'm thankful that such a great movie is a "pool" movie. No need for a remake.

True Grit remake worked for two reasons. They're both named Coen. The top billed cast didn't hurt, either.

Start with a great script, have deep talent across the board starting with the director and it could be done.

I can almost hear Pacino howling Scott's line. "You owe me MONEY!"

Fats --->Fast Eddie--->Vincent---->????

It's about time to extend the franchise with #3, but how to make it believable today?
Most people never saw a pool hall and the denizens of the old ones don't really exist. So it would have to be a latchkey girl who stumbles over Cruise in an alley somewhere initially on a short cut to school, & eventually makes it to the nationals of one of the leagues. Or even a major tournament. She'd have to wake up Cruise or rescue/bail him out of jail from his own misdeeds a few times along the way, etc. A modern family movie where the kid has to be grown up too quick & save the dysfunctional parent figure, maybe raise a sibling along the way, and it is not all hunky dory getting there.

Other movies with real potential: Earl's lightly fictionalized life has almost every element. Tortured genius story & incredible true vignettes all along the way.. That one probably needs a protege near the end that makes him believe again/focus purpose like raising an abandoned kid. Kid need not even get into pool, but somehow make Earl "better". How to make an ending believable, guardedly hopeful, not sappy?

Or, more family oriented but with a grinding struggle element - SVB starting with Granny &/or aunt taking bullied deaf kid to the pool hall. There's a zen aspect to the man & the way he's spent his life working.

Done right, either Earl or SVB movie could have a fair amount of pool scenes that would look as beautiful as pool can be, even to non-players. Not hokey trick shot stuff, though there could be a few short scenes.

So now i am thinking.
What great old movies about something other than pool
Could be re-made with pool as the focus,

Like how football took the place of boxing?

Might have better chance using storyline from The Hustler and do it as an actioner. Like he could be a hitman instead of poop player. Or a musical - he could be a dancer or a singer.
Reality is sports movies suck real bad. Every time I see movies that have genre as “sports”, I run other away

I was so disappointed when 2011 came and went without a sequel to the Color of Money, which was released 25 years after the Hustler. I had hoped for the same 25 year gap to give us another movie. I'd rather they NOT remake a classic like the Hustler, but instead give us a quality new movie altogether. There are some movies you just don't remake.

An aging Tom Cruise and even Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio could reprise roles in the new movie, such as Paul Newman did with Fast Eddie in the Color of Money. I think the key, aside from that, would be getting the right director on board. Most pool movies these days are just sad because there's no talent behind the camera.

Color of Money remake

I don't think you could remake the Hustler really effectively as it is a movie of its time.

As is Color of Money for the 80s.

Now if you could somehow get Tom Cruise involved I think you could make a really good sequel to TCOM relevant to our time right now

If they can remake COM with Cruise doing the older hustler role and someone else as the goofy natural, I think it could be good. It could do flashbacks of Cruise doing the antics when he was younger and him trying to keep the kid from repeating his mistakes.

Jeez, would you guys read the book? Walter Tevis knew how to write. The real COM could be a movie, as is.

Perhaps the OP asked the wrong question ...

Netflix will invest over $17 billion on content this year. (That’s according to BMO Capital Markets via “Variety”.)

Today, most of 'Hollywood's' creative energy and investment money are going into streaming services such as Amazon Prime, HBO, Disney+, and the like.

And that artistic freedom and those massive budgets attract the top showrunners, writers, actors, directors, cinematographers, etc.

A good series such as “Downton Abbey” or “Broadchurch” or — here at home, “The Sopranos” and “The Wire” — can take the time to spin out a compelling narrative. In fact, several of them.

In recent years, streaming has provided more compelling roles for women. Plus more responsibilities behind the camera.

A 90-minute movie can’t begin to paint as lush a portrait as even a one-year series can. And when it’s multiple years … well the possibilities grow exponentially.

Of course, I’m talking about a reboot of “The Hustler”. But the film v. streaming comparison would apply to any number of video projects. Probably not, now that I think it through, to the CGI, high-explosive, superhero films made for 12-year olds.

But … “The Hustler”. Character development and growth. Obstacles to overcome. A love story woven in. Setbacks. Cliffhangers. Yep, I can see it.

So, who would you cast to replace Newman, Gleason, Laurie, Scott, et alia?

Read both books that Walter Tevis brought forth on pool. The Hustler wasn't following his book , neither did the Color Of Money,,and both were great works. The Hustler shouldn't be touched nor the Color of money,,but they might take a shot with Tom Cruise taking the place of Fast Eddie and do the film Color Of Money true to the book with Fast Eddie passing away before the TV deal they had worked out for the both of em,,which was true to the book. Lady I knew sent me an autographed copy of the first edition of color of money, back in the day,she was Walter Tevis's Niece . Still have that copy sitting in our library. Well what ever they do , if they do it,, hope that it brings a new life to the game , as well as the other picture's did.

I think it could be done effectively, as long as most of the original story is adhered to.

What makes "The Hustler" great is that it is NOT a pool movie. Pool is merely the vehicle used to navigate some of the darker realities of life as some must experience it, such as loneliness, soul-searching, gambling, forced reliance on unscrupulous people, deception, harassment, heartbreak, being taken advantage of, etc.

If somebody tries to transform "The Hustler" into a pool movie, then they'll ruin it, but if they try to remake it and are vigilantly attentive to the core values, themes and messages of "The Hustler," a great remake is possible.

You may be on to something here.

I agree. There could be an updated version of The Hustler made. It could be set in this era with a little different take on Fast Eddie and Fats. The underlying themes could remain the same though.

The tough character would be Fats. Gleason would be tough shoes to fill. The others could be done but Gleason owned that character and I'm having a tough time thinking of anyone with the right stature and acting chops to even approach the role.

Only John Goodman could do it.

hve steven segal as the kid
have will ferrell as the hustler
the girl rosie odonnell

and have weinstein direct it from prison .

for the cue 9 have em playing with a budweiser cue

99.9% of all remakes SUCK. The Hustler is a classic American piece of film-making. Don't f^&k with it. Please.

But they will. Why?

Because Hollywood is played out of ideas.

If they all just quit and got new jobs we would have plenty of movies to last us an eternity.

Music too for that matter. Nothing new that doesn't suck.

Reading everyone's opinions are intresting. I always watch the Hustler on Turner, or other Channels when it comes on.

The movie is Classic, and yes it is old school Black & White. The other day I watch a U-Tube about the Movie, a critic said something intresting "it's a love story about a pool player". Thought for a few minutes, and said different take, but correct observation.

IMHO remaking the Huster with modern technology would not be as good, it like what Hollyweird like to do. Remaking classics, that IMHO are never better then the original.

Can not improve somethings, the originals are always better.

Chip, it was Fat's who coded out, Fast Eddie when on to work the college, then hustled art before getting burned out. Then, I'm back.

Lotta good new music out there but it ain't on the radio unless its a college FM station. Check out Marcus King. Badass imo. Its out there you just gotta hunt some. Movies? I agree. Maybe 5 a year worth spending a dollar on.
