Question #1. My own in house league with 70 teams (about 500 members) paid $10,000 first place 3 times per year. Usually a total of $25-$30,000 in prize money each session with an individual Allstar tournament and a second chance tournament for those teams that didn't qualify for the big tournament. The second chance tournament paid $2000 for first place.

Your national league with 230,000 members pays $15,000 once per year. Where is the money??????

Question #2. I've played in, competed against, hosted their finals, or watched the VNEA, BCA, APA, Missouri 8 Ball, Edelman league, 3-5-8 league, and my own inhouse league, Teachers 8Ball League. There is nothing constructive to be said about any league that has a handicap system that not only can't work, but won't work, yet they sell you that it is a good system, that will work, when your own mind tells you it's impossible to handicap players without watching them play.

I agree... Would be interesting to see what ideas people would have for the best overall standard. Most people are gonna get locked into a single system, and their way is the only way (like Teacherman - that's why he has the rep he has). It would/could be interesting to hear what other people think on the topic.

Well I wouldn't discount what he's saying. I played in an
in-house league a while ago and there wasn't really much, if
any sandbagging. Why? Cause the house already knows
practically everyone's speed. They've seen you playing in
the tourneys and in action and they got a pretty good idea
of how you play.

But they're always going to be exceptions. Say someone nobody
knows joins the league...and the guy gets all his action
elsewhere and stays under the radar. How're you going to
know he's not stalling? If that kind of stuff keeps you up
at night then maybe handicapped league play isn't your thing.

#1 That's nice Teacherman. However this is how you choose to operate your league and other leagues have their options as well. I can see your passion. That's good. However for what ever reason other leagues still continue to operate. My understanding of the APA is that a lot of folks enjoy it. Yes, most B players in other league would be considered a 7 unless they sandbag. Whatever league you think is best does not matter as leagues are for fun.

#2 Do you think that all golfers around the country are monitored by one person? Golf has a pure handicap system. Pool can too. Yes their are sandbaggers and they get caught by peers. Like it or not, I believe some organization should dictate you and every other league a standardized system. And believe me one day some organization will have a compelling reason for your players to demand you convert to this standard or leave your league.

i agree with Rosco..just remember it aint over till it's over..by that i mean i have witnessed people scratch,miscue ect.on the last ball...if i were you i would not be upset..if i were him i would never do it..as just think if you miscued if you had that last shot...always let a person shoot it out...enjoy your pool.........

This thread has mutated into something else but to be honest, I almost regret posting it because what you said above is how I came to feel. You never know and the possibility always exists.
The guy in question, although not a close friend, is a decent enough guy and that's why I regret the post. Maybe he was having a shitty day, probably pissed off he just dogged the 8 and so on. Doesn't mean I didn't go right over after the match and shake his hand.
I was really only asking a question but after thinking about it for a while probably should've just kept it to myself.

This all reminds me of a story i read in a post about one year ago ..can't recall what site it was on anyway it goes something like this :: a guy wrote that he was playing a Very Very Large man in 8 ball...the table had very tight pockets and many balls were bobbling without going in.they were playing like to 12 games..they were tied 11 games each ..as they started the last game the very large guy got more annoyed as they were playing with the bobbling balls just rattling in the pockets.....the big guy had an easy shot at the 9 to win the game........ he hit it and the 9 started to rattle in the pocket he was so upset as he thought for sure it was a typical rattle..as it was still rattling in the pocket he went beserk and took his pool cue placed one end to his sternum and started to run towrds the nearest concrete wall with the other end hitting the wall knocking him in the sternum breaking his cue knocking him to the floor and knocking him out.. right as he hit the floor the 9 went in and he Won the game !!!!!!!!!!!!!! everyone was laughing so hard ............the guy that was playing him put his money on the big guys chest and left......."it's never over till it's over"

Only joking with that last post. Your going to get all kinds of sore losers in pool halls with all kids of diferent rations. I've done a little ball raking and whining myself. Believe me he feels worse about raking the ball on you, than you felt having the ball raked on you.

You made that straight in shot under pressure, good on you. I enjoy all my victorys and when people don't like it when I win, that's there stuff. I'm trying really hard to be a gracious loser, because in a long set if you whine and beat yourself up, you only shark yourself. Just be happy that you don't react like he does and enjoy your wins. Some people like the NPA (National PoolPlayers Association) just want to tear down. We all know their sordid history, it's no wonder their supporters are just being destructive. That organization couldn't even pay it's players at their National tournament. Gave them some sort of vouchers. That's one of the biggest reasons for their demise.

The point is, that there is no need to be destructive to the pool world. Stop trying to create pool turf wars, and allow all to grow. The system that prevails will be the largest based on its own merits. The pool community needs to be inclusive of beginners, intermediate, advanced, and non players the like. Just like golf, basketball, or football for example. Exclude any one of those groups, and it greatly reduces the market as a whole.

Of course Teacherman and the likes, will continue to have a destructive attitude, which is typical bitterness with its stifling effects. His tact and attitude is a prime example of what has limited pool as a whole.

He was probably just venting his frustration with himself. It wouldn't bother me. I've had people concede a quite difficult shot. I just think to myself, "thank you, thank you" and move on to the next rack.

I took it that way. You kind of need thick skin if you're going to post on this forum sometimes. I do know how frustratiing it can be sometimes. I think I just expect people to behave the same way I do but that just isn't realistic. Probably why I love Efren Reyes so much. He misses a bunny, although rarely, he walks away smiling and shaking his head. Not all people have the mental makeup to do that and there is a boiling point.
Oh well, like I said earlier, probably should have just kept this one to myself but then again, it seems to be a fairly popular thread so people do have opinions on this which is what I was looking for.

Just for the sake of semantics, this was an APA match I played last night against another 6. Here's what happened.
I had two balls and the eight and he was on the eight. He played it for the side and left it hanging with about a balls width. I played my first ball just past the eight in the side and my remaining shot was a length of the table, straight in shot which are not always my forte. Plus the eight is just dangling there so it's a do or die shot. I hit it perfect and stopped the cue ball dead in it's tracks for a straight in shot at the hanging 8. Before I could get over to shoot the 8 he swiped at it with his stick, not allowing me to finish out the rack. I don't think I would have minded if he just said, don't worry about it, but it was the way he knocked the 8 away.

Maybe it's just me but if someone makes a nice out I let them finish the rack and tell them it was nice out. It just seemed childish and needed to vent.

Im with you.. This would bother me as theres a way to concede with class and a way to concede without. Him knocking the 8 in like that to me in my opinion, hes not letting you have the satisfaction. He could have came up to you and said 'You know, thats good enough... good shooting'.. Now that would be the way to go. In your case, when he swiped the 8 in with a pissy attitude, that would just elevate my game to shut him out the rest of the way. I rarely concede games.. because theres always a chance something might happen.. I was on the 8 last nite in a league match, ez 8.. and I miscued and my opponent won.. Never concede... you never know what might happen....
