Put up your "player" cue as money for action in a set match??

I was playing in a strange poolroom, did not know the owner or the room. I was travelling thru the night after league, and had left my case in the car. I decided I had a few hrs before I was to meet someone, so I found this room.

The setting:
About 5pm, I am on the 3rd table in from the door on a 9ft. diamond. A 40's(ish) black gentleman with a 10yr old boy get on the table next to me. The Father can't play and the boy is just pushing the CB all over the table. I was just shooting balls, and practicing shape/placement, so when I hadda straight in shot, I'd just fire it in.

This got dad's attention, and he asked me to help him with his son. I did , helping him with his stance so he could hit the OB. I left them alone, and ten mins later the boy sinks a ball. Dad & boy are jubilant ! They keep playing and dad doesn't have a lick of a stroke, yet he pulls some nice position for 3 rails on more than 1 occasion.

Almost an hour after I help the kid, Dad asks me to play him a set. I was getting ready to leave, so i made an excuse........................
"hey, i'd love to, but I don't have any money, I'm broke." I figured he would just shrug it off, and play his kid. Instead, he pulls this "Roll" outta his pocket and says "I just got paid" I made him peel the roll, It was mostly 5-10-20's with a 50 or two dotted in, and a hella lotta singles. He said, "i'll play you for your cue," The roll wasn't big enuff.:p

Would you put up your player as $$$ to get action ???

(assuming you both agree on value of cue)

Oops !

Yeah, silly me....
That's what I get for dancing around AZ.

MODS PLs Move.
Thank you !

Great story

I would, if he could cover the value of my cue... Again this isn't the place for this so...... I'm selling many cues, check out my threads... Black Wednesday sales...

I don't always agree with Phade.but
I would put up my playing cue car or house if I liked the game
and the money was large

ps in the 60s this was common/I hate to think how many Willie hoppe cues I won,or the few Balabushka cues

But in my day that was par for the course
I did lose 3 Brunswick StrokeMasters and my cheapo cases and my entire stack one time
I was forced to mow yards to get back in action

I also had to fade a lecture from my mother on the evils of gambling and losing

come to think of it,maybe you did the right thing
this "shoot the works "attitude is not right for everybody

playing for your case dough can affect you in a funny way
it might even reveal to you something about yourself

Mike Massey once gave me the 7 and played one handed on a bar box, gave me gas money to get home
I quit playing and went to work in Real Estate and got married, had 5 kids,9 grand children etc
Thank you Mike

I have seen guy do that and lose the cue. If I dont care much about cue I would do it, but if it my favourite and I refused few times already

No way. Not to a stranger.
Maybe if I knew there was a chance we could match up again so I could win my cue back if on the outside chance I should lose it the first time.
Otherwise, no way.

I played for my cue one time. I was 16 and it was more of a blood match than anything. My very good friend and I got into it and were talked into (by much older gentleman just trying to have a laugh) playing for cues and "rights" to the pool hall we played in. The idea was loser gives up pool.

I won that match and ended up giving my buddy his cue back about a month later. I realized I'd have never given him a dime back if we played for $$ but there was something about it that just got to me. Never played for a cue since. I don't collect so I normally only have one shooter and maybe another cue at any given time. That lesson still looms to this day, seems unholy to take a cue from a player.

I never bet my cue and never will.

I have won probably five or six cues off of other players. I have also taken players' cues to hold until they paid me when they air barrelled me on a bet.

I would hold the cue for a certain amount of time to give them a chance to pay me back. Normally, I would hold them for a couple of weeks. Not one of them ever came up with the money, so I either sold the cue or kept it.

Included Adams, Palmer, McDermott, Muecci, Helmsetter, Esporita (sp.?) and a beautiful early Joss West with lots of ivory.

I gues the craziest thing I ever beat a guy out of was his car. He went bust and put his car title up against $300. A Honda Civic.

I drove that car for two years until the timing chain blew.

I had quite a collection at one time..

Eh main forum is fine for this, unless we're saying it started life somewhere else.

For the right money I would have no problem doing this.
I dunno what the right money is, it depends on how much I like my chances in the set.
But I try not to get overly sentimental about the cue. It's just a tool.

I'm never gonna be one of those superstitious guys who thinks
they can't make a ball because they lost/sold That One Special Cue that
was somehow perfectly attuned to their game.

Stick an OB shaft on mop handle and I'll be good to go.

Funny thing about those cues "held" I have never had anyone comeback for one either!

I once talked a guy into buying a Toeboy Titlist conversion from Joe Salazar. He did like
the cue and played well with it. He was with his friend,a known go-off,in the pool hall, and
the friend mada a game. Not having a cue,he used the Toeboy.Well you can guess where this is going! The rightfull owner never has gotten that cue back.

Sounds like he was hiding his speed. I value most of my cues more than their actual monetary value, so no, I probably wouldn't do that.

Depends on the game, depends on the amount, depends on the cue...in that order ;). I have certain cues I would never put up, no matter the amount. Other cues, sure...why not lol. If the cue doesn't have any special value, it wouldn't hurt to lose it any less than the bet amount

I have run out of money a couple of times and put up my cue. I would always loose then come back and pay to get my stick. I don't recommend you doing this. Also if you are loosing and have enough money for one more set you are already busted.

Ah the old bring your kid and pretend you're a dad that can't play trick eh? I'm suspicious of 100% of all people I don't know that play near me. I watch for tells that they are pretending to not play well.

The only real question you have to ask yourself is, "Is the risk worth the reward?" If you feel it is, flip it! But as someone else mentioned, establish cue value before you begin.

I agree with macneilb.

If the cue is replaceable and you like the game, then why not?

My 40 year old playing cue is not replaceable, so I'd never put it in the middle unless I knew the opponent had NO chance of beating me. I'd put my Poison Vx29 J/B in the middle though.

Nope. If I lose money I can just say that's my limit. Doesn't mean I am broke. If I have to put up my cue. Makes it look like I am broke. Tough enough playing for money you don't want to lose. Can't imagine a hill game. Thinking if I miss this shot I may never play with this cue again. If I lose just money. I only have to come up with money to gamble again. If I lose my cue. I have to come up with money for a cue and money to gamble again.
