Wrap/Handle Length

I tried to find an old thread re. this question/topic, but I couldn't find one - that said...

I know that 12" is the standard length for the wrap or handle on a cue...but I'm wondering how often cues are constructed with an 11" wrap instead?....I'm thinking that on some cues, it would be a good thing to see more of the forearm, if the wrap is not the main focus, and the forearm has particularly beautiful wood, inlay work, etc...

Also, to my eye, I think a butt with a 13" forearm and an 11" handle actually looks better, and more pleasing, proportionately, than 12" and 12" - anybody else think this?

Ghost, wraps will vary in size depending upon the length of the cue, on a 58" cue most wraps are certainly between 12 and 13 inches. On a 60" cue wraps normally are between 13 and 14 inches, but nothing says that a wrap has be any specific length. I have seen custom made break cues with more than half the butt wrapped but, it most cases this personal preference. But, another thing that you should take into consideration is the method of balance used for a cue, in most cases a wrap starts within a inch of the cues balance point.

Hope this helps

Ghosty, I prefer 4-1/2" for the buttsleeve (regardless of whether my buttcap is 1-7/16" or 1" or .750" or .500"), 12-1/2 " for the wrap area and 12" for the forearm including the joint. This is the most balanced (and practical) look for me.

is it etched in stone?

i would like to think that you could build a cue using any dimensions. i am currently building a cue with a 14 inch forearm, a 10 inch handle, and a 5 inch butt.
i think a cue with a 11 or even 10 inch wrap would play just fine.

I did a antique Butterfly,4butterflys, and wanted to keep as much of the orriginal wood as possible, but needed to add some in handle, I wound up with a 8" wrap section, and the cue looks awsome. plays awsome also. Thanks Jim

13" forearm looks long to me unless it has a long collar and thick C-ring.
I like 12.25-12.5" forearm with a 12" wrap.

I like 12.5, 12, 4.5 It has a balanced look. Have at times used a longer wrap but took the extra length from the butt sleeve. I believe I see Earl lately using a longer wrap as did Buddy Hall with cues built for him by Blud.

I just found a picture of one of the Hall cues

I've done a bunch that had the wrap clear at the back.
1/2" buttcap, 12" wrap, 16+ for the front.
Some with even longer wraps.

The few american style cues I have made, have all been based on the following when looking at them after completion:
Joint collar 1",Foreman 11.5",Handle 11.5",Butt sleeve 3.75",Butt cap 1"
=28.75".
Obviously these will change slightly if there is ringwork.

Thanks for all of the post's so far - hope to see more...it's interesting to see the diversity in the reply's re. preferred butt specs.

PS, I think that Jennifer Lopez's butt specs are ones that a lot of us would agree are perfect....:)

I typically use a 13" forearm, 12" wrap, and a 3 inch buttsleeve with a 1" buttcap. I will use a 12" inch forearm and add an inch to the buttsleeve if I find some premium shorter pieces.
