WRISTS - The "hidden power catalyst" of a great stroke or "just along for the ride"?

You talk about having the right to opinions, yet, here you are, once again trolling me because of my opinion. Guess you figured enough people didn't read your troll in the other thread, so you had to do it here to. All in the hopes of another flame war. What a hypocrite you are! I don't need a shadow following me around, Take a hike, institigator.

What in hell are you talking about? You appear to have lost it & gone over the edge. If anyone is following anyone around it is you following CJ (& me).

That post has no reference to you, but if you see yourself in there then perhaps that should tell you something & everyone else too.

That's your defense? Hoping people haven't read both threads? You must really think everyone on here is stupid.

What in the hell are you talking about?

I posted from what thread that quote came.

My posting of that quote from that thread makes no mention of you. It was intended as an 'in general' observation.

I have put my faith in the intelligence of the readership far more than many have.

However... here you are sort of proving the point of that member & inciting me to respond to your crap accusations.

I have no desire nor inclination to go through this same old crap with you again today, but I can't stand your posting untruths about me or others.

So... I will probably resort to a one word response should you persist with what seems like some sort of delusional impairment.

post 142 which you immediately followed up with post 143. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=397029&page=4

You really have issues.

If you look at the timing it might come to you that I was reading the thread & composing my post based off of his, while you made your post.

Do you think I would be afraid to quote or mention you if it was about you?

Like I have suggested to you before, keep your day job, because you are terrible when it comes to reading the intentions of others.

That said, since his post involved you, I can see how you might have thought that mine was too, but you are mistaken.

Mine were just in general & not specific to you.

Interesting though, that you took it that way.

Anyone bother watching the so called hammer stroke in action

I tried but had issues getting it so I stopped.

What about your definition of pinning? Maybe PM me. I'me interested & think I may have been wrong before when & said I thought we were on the same page or maybe it's just an effect that I'm not aware of.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

It's what Jason is doing IMO.

Good post! Just as I do (and probably most of us) Jason definitely uses the "hammer" stroke on break. In fact he uses what I call a power stroke - he cocks his wrist AND drives with the larger muscles too (shoulder & legs) which is evidenced by his forward motion. However, as the 2-sec stills below show, he uses a pendulum stroke (no wrist cock)on normal shots, with the hand going forward as it releases in follow through.

It's what Jason is doing IMO.

As you can see in the stills I posted above, his elbow DOES drop. Therefore IMO it is more of a piston stroke instead of pinned elbow. A pinned elbow remains at the same height throughout the stroke.

Something to consider in using either the hammer stroke or a forward wrist flick is that the stroking arm must momentarily lessen its speed and provide a resistance or blocking action in order for the wrist to move forward.

In the a kinetic chain, one link following the other will come to a stop and transfer the built up momentum to the next link and increase the total output power. Saying the wrist movement slows down the stroke is incorrect. It slows down naturally in the energy transfer as the next link begins its movement.

Best,
Mike

Why? The video you just posted is the best example of the hammer grip (wrist cock) I've seen yet! Great post SP99!
We must've watched different videos. The one I saw the wrist wasn't cocked in either direction, and the hand stayed pretty much straight with the forearm.

And the "hammer" discussed here isn't a grip, but a motion of the hand during the stroke, from one cocked direction to the other.

Continental Tennis Grip

Here is a picture and video illustrating the holding of the cue. If you have ever used a hammer you should you'll identify the grip.

Sorry for the poor UT but if you watch CJ in competition you will see he holds the cue the same way. Wish I could find a better video.

Well, yes. I'd love to see a short video of a stroke though. I think I can do it, but I must not be doing it right...The tip of the cue goes down into the cloth very fast and it's very hard to cue smoothly. It would be great to see someone who's an expert at it, use that grip and wrist action.

SP99 as always I enjoy your posts. Some of the things you post make me think.

To get a feel for the grip find a tack hammer and with the tack hammer pretend you are driving a nail into a piece of wood. You can do this just sitting in a chair.

The difficulty will come when you use the stroke on a cue ball. Imagine that the OB is the nail. Thats what I do.

John :)
