So playing a ring game last night. My buddy reaches over the table to make a shot. His large belly knocks a chalk off the rail and on to the playing surface. His shot misses the intended pocket but travels up table, hits the chalk, its line redirected and goes into the pocket. Next ball is a money ball. So in my 50+ years of playing pool I have never seen this happen. So what should have happened? He keeps shooting? Spot ball and next player has ball in hand? So, you make the call.
 
I think if he causes a ball to change trajectory or direction, it has to be a foul. If ya'll have been spotting balls made on a foul, pull it out. If not leave it down, but either way the next shooter gets BIH.

That is how I would play it.
 
I called a foul on some kid at junior nationals for shooting with the chalk on the playing surface. It didn't effect any balls and in hindsight wasn't a foul. But I was a 13 year old kid and didn't have a full grasp on the rules. If the chalk does interfere with a ball it is a foul if it doesn't then no foul.
 
Things like that are counted as fouls, the idea is that the player needs to be in control of the equipment they are using, chalk, cue, jump cue handles, bridges, etc... and if the equipment interferes with the balls it's a foul. Personally I do make exceptions for the rule when playing people that have a physical handicap, say an issue with using their hand/arm/whatever, but not for a large belly LOL.

You are not the only one to get a bit ahead of the rules, a few years ago at Jr Nationals they said not to leave the cuestick on the table while lining up for a shot, you had to keep at least one hand on it. Can't lay it on the table, then walk around looking at the shot. One girl put the cue on the table to tie her shoe and the opponent said it was a foul, which it was not in that case.

Foul

You get ball in hand .... and lose a friend if it's for money.
 
I have seen something like this, the diff was the shooter had to drag the chalk back with his belly onto the rail before a ball struck it.


No foul.
 
It's definitely a foul. I haven't played a ring game in a while, and the rules can vary from game to game, but I don't think the incoming player typically gets ball in hand after a foul. Usually, the ball spots and the next player shoots from the cue ball's current location. But it's all situational depending on what rule set you're using.
 
Pretty sure if you shoot with the chalk lying on the table it is a foul, even if you do not know it is there.
Doesn't matter if a ball hits the chalk or not.
It simply being on the playing surface while shooting is a foul.
Be glad to hear this qualified by someone that knows better but I am almost positive nothing can be on the playing surface
but the balls, a mechanical bridge, or a part of the shooters body.

That's what I was thinking. It's a foul but not sure I would call it if the guy is a friend and if I have the better end of the deal long term.
 
Its been a while but I never heard of a ball in hand foul in a RING GAME. Was the game being played by local rules that you have: To try to hit the ball??? To make the ball??? Or two foul rule??? If the rule was to try to hit or try to make the ball I would rule that it is a foul, the ball stays down and the incoming player shoots as it lies.

There is no such standard foul. The only way it could be a foul is if you interpret it as unsportsmanlike conduct. The rules are available online here:
