The greatest Pool Story that could be made into a movie and would probably win an Oscar would be the true story of HOF Cisero Murphy.

Those of you old like me probably know exactly what I am talking about. People would leave the Movie Theatre crying and screaming of joy.

Those that don't know what I am writing of, look it up on your pute. A Black Man in the 1960's trying to play in a white mans game.

What the White Pros did in that day is why Pool is a Gentleman's game.

The story is so interesting the Movie people would not have to add one bit of drama other than the 100% true story

There's a movie coming out soon on the big screen about Jackie Robinson's story/plight. I think more people can relate to baseball wa-a-ay easier than they can pool, therefore the movie wouldn't be such a big hit at the box office, although I'd go see it for sure.

Get Jamie Fox the lead role???

ROFLMAO, I was going to say it was the Jackie Robinson of Pool story but figured if no one knew Murphy they wouldn't know Robinson.

Oh heck yeah man, Jamie Fox was born to play the part.

Jackie Robinsons story is great indeed.

But i think the Cisero Murphy movie would be just as big if not bigger. We as a people have not seen a great pool movie arguably since COM.
although pool isnt as popular, its a movie that will take you by suprise. hell, most people already know the jackie robinson story.

I think its a great idea. And would love to help in anyway

I have one of the original Movie Posters from the 1960's on the Movie "The Hustler". On the poster it mentions nothing about Pool, it was 100% billed as "A Love Story"

Murphys story though the involvent of Pool is there is so much more interesting than just a Pool movie. I was at the BCA show the year in the late 1990's when he was finaly inducted into the Hall Of Fame and if not mistaken he passed about a year later.

His story will be told if I have to give everything in the world up during retirement and do the interviews and write the book myself to be made into a movie.

We all know how poorly I write, so let us not come to that.

This is a great idea. It is true that the Great Cisero Murphy story would be a hit not only for his skill but for what he was able to accomplish by breaking down the doors or racism.

From his rough up bringing in Brooklyn to the many state championships he won as well as his time giving back to the community. He was a great pool player and a wonderful man so this story should be told for the younger generation.

Thank you for saying the words I lacked. We need this younger generation for the game to continue.

TomHay, I agree that this would make a wonderful movie. It was discussed back in the 90's when Cisero was being inducted to the BCA Hall of Fame(1995), and his untimely death made it a more difficult proposal. The rights to the story belong to the heirs, and I am not sure whether a contract has ever been finalized. If his widow is still alive, I would encourage anyone interested in developing a script, biography, or film treatment, to attempt to contact her.

Many here on AZ have written from their personal experiences with Cisero, and are ardent supporters of a film idea.

The selection of Jamie Foxx is an interesting one. He does play pool and would be a good choice for the role. He participated in a charity tournament at Hollywood Billiards some years ago, and showed a lot of natural talent at the table.

Good Luck with the Project.

Cisero Murphy was the Jackie Robinson of pool. No question about it.

I created a Wiki page on him in 2009, and within 3 days, a Cisero Murphy factoid was on the Main Page of Wikipedia in the "Did You Know" section, which is quite an honor in the Wikipedia world. It stated he was the first African-American pool player to win a world and U.S. title.

Here is the Wikipedia article: Cisero Murphy.

Blackjack gave me a photo to insert in the article, but unfortunately, due to Wikipedia's strict publishing rules, they removed it since I did not have the sole rights to the photo. It's hard to contribute anything to Wikipedia -- data or photos -- unless you can document it to the nth degree. One can spend hours researching one sentence, and you can't contribute that sentence unless it's backed up, which makes it hard for American pool players since we have no true archives of achievements. Most is word of mouth.

Even the National Billiards News with its decades' worth of monthly reports sometimes never even provided the date of an event. I never understood that. Sometimes this still happens on AzBilliards' Main Page, no dates. It is important to the historical record for media folks to provide dates, yet this practice still continues today. :(

Cisero was heralded in New York City as one of the great sports heros. Here is a street mural with some of the Big Apple's most famous sports celebrities, and Cisero Murphy is included.

I think Cuba Gooding would be a natural to play this genteleman's part--liked the part from Wiki that stated the pool players picketed for him to be allowed to enter the tourny---

Good thought... I'd watch this.

JAM, any tidbits or photos you can post that couldn't make it into the wikipedia page for whatever reason?

I would love to see a movie about Cisero Murphy.
But to make it complete, for me, I would want to see the first part dedicated
to James Evans.
Many people say that James was the greatest black player ever, but, like Satchel Paige, never had the chance to compete on the world stage in his prime.

Here is Cisero, like Mosconi, he shot out of his left eye, and like Buddy Hall, he paused at the end of his back-stroke.

Movie.

Do we really need another film about Jackie Robinson?
I know what some may be thinking but do we need
another film about the Titanic, or Lincoln or a mobster etc.
we know those stories again and again and again.

This could be a great film only if it has a great script.

Hand any Director 100 blank pages and lets see what he does with that.
A great script, the right casting, and for pool editing a must.
One of the great features of the Hustler was the Editing.
Spike Lee could Do this and do it well.

Tom...So then, as Jack White would say... "Let Us to Billiards Away!" LOL  I like your idea!

For those of you that don't know, that was the title of Jack White's book...out of print, and sought after enough to go for $100 or more, when you can find one!

Morgan Freeman

If Morgan Freeman accepts my offer to sit in the commentary booth at thie June's Ultimate 10 Ball Championship, I can only hope that the conversation turns toward him making a movie about pool. Cisero Murphy will be on the tip of my tongue.
