Your honest opinion of Viking Cue.

Just wanted some input into the quality of product Viking Cue puts out. I am considering a new cue purchase (viking g50). I don't think I really need a custom, from the ground up, cue right now but I would be adding a predator Z-shaft to this cue.

thanks

Viking puts out a very high quality product for the pricetag. I would encourage you to try the Viking shaft before you add the Z, though. They play pretty good out of the box, as their cues have a plastic ferrule that reduces deflection. Must be an OK cue - Alcano won his WC with a custom Viking. I am stuck between my custom Joss and my LTD Viking as my player.

after seeing a picture of their "A" joint i don't know how well they're put together.

i've played with a low end one that played like junk. then i played with a mid-high end one that played pretty good.

i think as long as you stick to the mid range ones it'll probably be worth the cash

Shawn, how does Viking's plastic ferrule reduce deflection. Is there a name for that plastic, or is it proprietary.

For the cash, it is hard to beat them. Like any production cue, it is a bit of a crapshoot when it comes to shafts, but a 20 year old Viking that I used to play with was one of the best cues I've ever used(and I've played with Josey, Scruggs,Schon, pre split Joss, Gilbert, etc, so I have a decent idea what I am talking about. Worst case scenario, you use a different shaft, and they hold their resale value fairly well also.

One of the poolrooms I frequent is a Viking dealer. Every cue of theirs I have seen was top notch. They have also done custom work for the room owner like Harley Davidson cues.

Their repair work is also first rate. The room owner has sent them lots of cues over the years, and they all came back looking like new. Their prices are on the low side as well.

I know Viking doesn't get talked about much, but their cues are really well built from everything I've seen. They are also still made in in the US.

I have used Vikings for most of my 50+ years. I just bought a new one befor I started playing again. There a good bang for the buck. Johnnyt

Good AMERICAN company that stands behind their product! For my money the two best production cues Made In America are Viking and Joss.

Good cue for the money. One thing I have noticed on some of their shafts, if you hear and feel a click.... good chance it is an air pocket inbetween the capped ferrule and the shaft wood. But it is an easy fix to cut the length of the ferrule to match up with the shaft wood. At that point, it has a VERY solid hit.

yeah ... I just sent in the order for mine with a the standard shaft. If it doesn't work out I will go ahead and look another aftermarket one.

Never played with one but the late Larry Johnson aka "Boston Shorty" swore by them - and nobody can deny his ability as he played pocket and 3-c .

A lot of the lower end and higher end cues have the same exact joint.

Anyways, I fully endorse Viking. I have a G-08 and it plays as good as and other production cue I have played with. Because of the G-08 style, most people think its an old Meucci ST-3 and when they play with it the still think this. My cue plays great and it has won me lots of trophies.

I am currently in the process of getting a Tiger Ultra shaft for it but the current shaft plays great; I just like the stiffer aftermarket ones. Viking is the best production cue for the price. I know it is made in America too because when it was shipped, it was packed with newpaper from the Madison, Wisconsin Newspaper where it was made. :)

deflected

Lightweight. Weak. But reduces deflection....

I have a Viking cue that I got in 1999. It is from their Millenium line of cues. I use it every once in awhile. It was the second cue I ever owned and I won't be parting with it any time soon. I would recommend Viking.

Smart move for exactly the reasons you gave.

Edit- Or should I say, "Very wise Grasshopper!" :D

Viking Ferrule

Not weak at all. Viking ferrule material is lightweight and extremely strong. I've taken a ferrule blank and hit it with a hammer and squeezed in a vice and they do not break  It's plastic and proprietary. Predator wanted the material but was denied.

I've got a P7 about 2 years ago and wouldn't trade it! It's got the #5 Viking joint and has great feedback when you strike the object ball and that's with the original shaft. I'm completely satisfied with the factory shaft/ferrule combination. Oh, and the customer service is great if you need it for some reason. Happy Holidays to all!

I play with a VM28 I paid $220 new. I also had Viking make me a 314 shaft with matched joint ring, about $20 more than Mullers would charge for their same 314.

I play almost every day with it, and take it everywhere I go.

One thing additional not mentioned is that you can get your cue with just about any wrap or joint configuration from Viking. Just go on their website, find what you want, and have your Viking dealer order it for you.

This pic gives me chills just thinking about the deadly shot I've made, and the ones still waiting to happen!
