Your man in Manila

Jay,

Now that you have a dinner stakehorse (steakhorse?) we will need to renegotiate our deal. With all that extra dinero filling your pockets I fear you will need to foot the massage bill for the week. And my back is killing me.

Timberly,

Jay only THINKS I'm buying. I've put the bite on him in most bars around the world. This time I'm telling him that FedEX didn't deliver my wallet.

I heard you'd committed the money and personally Guaranteed the first 5 drinks yourself?

Two drinks and I'm a goner. Then Jerry asks me to play some pool. Such a friend.

Your problem stems from that bulge in your back pocket. I'll try to help relieve you of some of it. You'll feel much better then, I promise.

Jay,

Whatever you please! And if I can get you in the commentary box I'd love to have you beside me. There is a lot going on in the pool world right now that we could fill dead time with!

Jerry and Jay in the Com Box? That would be amazing! Great stories, great analysis, great everything!

Jerry, I hope you can manage to get Jay into the Sky Com Box!

My original plans were to go, but, my overprotective mom keeps telling me that they will kidnap me because I don't look filipino enough:rolleyes: . If anything, I think they would pay to get rid of me:D .

One pocket, such sweet words;) . I just need to learn to play:o .

I'm in China now, and I saw the reports about the typhoon that hit the Philipines on the news. It hadn't hit Manila yet.

China is beautiful and peaceful, but very crowded. Think mid town Manhattan at midday. A Hard working, industrious people. I see no homeless here. They eat a healthy diet too. No obese people either. And so inexpensive. $10 goes a long way here. Bus ride for me and my gal 50 cents. Lunch for two 75 cents. Food shopping for a week, less than $20 for a cart load of good food and drink. Nice hotel room, $15 to $20 a night.

I won't get to Manila until Monday the 6th, when the round of 64 begins. Then I will become active on here. Tell me what you would like to hear about. You know me. I'm not afraid to ask anyone anything. I have a few questions of my own for IPT players.

This is a test post. Have been unable to post here since yesterday.

Tried twice to tell you about the pool action in China. Maybe third time is the charm. Went to the biggest poolroom in Guangzhou last night. 12 6x12's and 4 9' pool tables. On one pool table three guys are playing 9-Ball for ten a game. My GF asks them if I can play. I get in.

One guy is very good, turns out "Jamie" is from Taiwan. He and I win every game until the other two quit. I ask him to go for 20. No problem. I am playing with a junk cue, thick shaft and flat tip. Too tough to overcome and after ten or twelve games I pull up, stuck a couple of games. Jamie is using an old Joss East by the way.

I ask him to play One Pocket or Banks. He acts like he has no idea what I'm talking about, so I explain One Pocket. Make eight balls in your corner and you win. I tell him it's a slow game so we can play for a hundred. They have seen my thick bankroll full of hundreds and the Chinese are gamblers. He accepts. Cool!

Six games later Jamie has seen enough One Pocket. He asks to play either 9-Ball or Eight Ball. It is after 12, so I tell him I will come back tomorrow. I can get a file and some sandpaper and fix the tip then. Eight Ball sounds good to me.

My first time in a Nationalist China poolroom and I'm in action for a hundred a pop. Not too shabby.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Great story Jay! It's probably not as common for someone to walk into a poolroom over there with a wad full of hundreds looking for some action. It also sounds like you should've brought your own cue along for the ride instead of using the junk your stuck with now, it's good to hear the Chinese like to gamble a little just like us.

Let us know how it goes!

Jay,

Good luck in China.

I heard the tables are very different in China, it is more like a mini snooker tables, is that true?

Thanks for the post.

Is that $100 USD or 100RMB per game? If $100 USD you have found some real good action. I haven't been able to find anyone who plays for more than 30rmb a game. For those that don't know, the exchange rate is 8rmb to 1 USD. The average wage is around 2000RMB/month in the cities. So $100US per game is HUGE ACTION for pool in China according to my limited experience. I have seen Mahjong played for a $100US per man per round.

I just know that there has to be larger action around given the Asian love of gambling. Just like you Jay to find it!! Shame on you taking your girl to the poolroom....I know, i'd have done the same thing.
