Your man in Manila

Lost another long post. This is not a perfect system. Can be frustrating to write for 15 minutes and have it all get wiped out. My best work down the drain. Oh well, I try again.

Thanks for your efforts. The posts are golden so keep them coming. I like the Chinese culture input. The Pinoys are great people, lots of fun, just don't know as much about the Chinese. No brown nosin', just greasing the info hotline. :-)

What are the approximate air fare costs for each location to and from?
thanks,
JoeyA

Lost another long one. I'm getting disgusted. Will go to breakfast and try again later. Sorry kids.

I write these long pieces and when I try to submit them it says I am not signed in. So I sign in again and the piece has disappeared. I'll try to figure out something. Very frustrated with the net now.

Maybe the third time will be the charm. Upstairs at One Side cafe there are six Brunswick Metros, set up just like the tournament tables. They must have their own "Ernesto" over here.

All six tables have money games going on. Relatively small, 50 or a 100 a set. But this is "money" over here. Try multiplying by five to get the buying power.

Tyler Edey is playing an Oldtimer (Bosco?) 9-Ball and Mike Davis is playing Jerome Rotation. In front of us Sander Tot takes on one of the new breed of young guns, Jerry is all I know. He look to be about 19 or 20. And he can play. Solid cue ball, and effortless run outs. Gene is like a proud parent. and the youngster looks to Gene for approval after each rack.

Several of the youngsters visit with us. Gene introduces me as an important Pool promoter in America. Thanks Gene, 100 well spent. I can see they all dream of fame and fortune in America. After all another street kid made it (Efren).

No big games and I am tired, so I head for the hotel. I run into Marcus outside. I almost exit the cab to see him play. He is a match for these youngsters. Marcus is a notch above.

Will check on Orcullo-Chao matchup. All I've heard so far is that Dennis is beating everyone, including Busty earlier in the week. He is the MAN right now.

Yes, it is fouls on all balls, so players must be careful. Ok, let's see if this goes thru.

Hey Jay... what do you look like? hehehe... Im there almost everyday...well, except yesterday. I will be back there today.

Maybe I'll put a small sticker on my shirt with AZB on it so that you'll know I'm an AZB'er.

nbc

Middle aged, bald, short, with a Media pass around my neck. Ask at the Media room or ask one of the players. Most know me. I hope to see Bandito and Renegade if they're here.

Thanks, it looks like if I post as replies it may work.

Hahaha... yeah... you have to try every option, it seems.

Okay, I'll look for you later.

If I see Bandido, I'll tell him you're looking for him as well.

rgds,

Thanks for the great reports but sorry you are having to do each one 3 times! I'd love to see the pool culture there firsthand. Must be surreal!

Jay--there might be a time-out function that kicks in after a certain amount of time elapses and then you have to sign in again. How about posting your reports in a few shorter segments instead of one long one?

Jay,

Before you try and post, perhaps you can save what you have written by right clicking the mouse, highlighting text, and saving it. If the post is lost when you send it, then simply past the text and try again....

just a thought.

Regards,

Doug

On long post, I write them on Notepad then copy and paste. If it did got lost, then you re-login and paste again. Works pretty well. :D

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I have some options. I'll get it sorted out.

Round trip air to Hong Kong approx 1K. From HK to Manila about 250 RT. Deals can vary from month to month and based on advance purchase.

Today is moving day at the WPC. 64 continue and 64 go home (or go to One Side). Only about two dozen certain yet. The rest of the spots are still up in the air. This is a tough format with the small groups.

Jay, clear the cookies. Go to tool:options: and clear all the cookies. then log in again and the AZ cookie will reset.

This WILL solve the problem.

Another thing i do whe I write somethign long is to make sure the cursor is in the note field and hit ctrl-a which will highlight everything then hit ctrl-c which will copy everything. Then if you lose it you can just repaste in again using ctrl-v (paste).

I do this as a matter of habit now just in case - but the clearing the cookies WORKS.

Just came from the TV booth after working a match with Jerry Forsythe. We started out with Engert and Van Corteza, but got switched over to Alex P. vs. Kun Lee from China. This match determined who went thru. Good match, went hill-hill and Lee made a great break, dropping two balls and leaving a wide open table. He cleaned up and sent Alex to the sidelines.

The Chinese are coming up big here. Filipinos started with 21 players and the Chinese had 16. Looks like they will both have 9 (possibly more) in the final 64. It looks like I'll get more time in the TV booth. I enjoyed working with Jerry. It was our first match together and it felt like we had done this many times before.

Interesting match-up here. Must win for Davis. He has a loss already. If Marlon wins, he advances. The arena is nearly full, all filipinos and me. Mike looks around the room at all the filipinos and then he looks right at me and smiles.

Quite a contrast in styles. Mike has this long, open awkward looking stance. Add his long up and down stroke and he looks like just another league player. Until he starts running out every rack.

Meanwhile Marlon is totally un-filipino looking. His stroke has none of that flowery up and down action that we are used to seeing from a filipino. Actually he looks more American in the way he strokes his cue. Had trouble putting my finger on who he reminded me of. Then it came to me. The late Tony Ellin. Short, stocky, shirt askew. Marlon even eyes the table like Tony and gets down like him too.

Next post to come.

Jay, Marlon started as a snooker player. He represented the Philippines in
international snooker competition countless of times. That's why his stroke is
not flowery like the others.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for all the great updates. What I usually do when I want to type a very long post, is type in Word or Wordpad and then copy-paste (select the text with your mouse cursor making it "blue" and then press ctrl+c, go to az billiards and press ctrl+v) the text into AZ billiards (quick)reply. I believe if you take to long to type a reply it won't work either way. I caught you on ESPN btw, nice work!

gr. Dave

edit: Just noticed Blowfish gave the same advice.

You might get flamed for saying that, quick run! :D

Didn't realize that was you Jay. I did enjoy the commentary. Jerry's been doing a great job throughout.

The only thing to improve is the pronunciation of the Chinese player's names.

Here are a few tips:
'Name' : 'Approx Sound'

Xu Meng = Shoe Mung
Li He Wen = Lee Her Won
Yang = Young
Wang = Wung
Chao = Chow

Jay, thanks for all of the updates. Keep em coming, we REALLY appreciate the fantastic updates.

"Kun Lee" should actually be addressed as Lee Kun Fang, and you were right during your commentary that he's one of the elite players in Taiwan. He used to be real sharp years ago, quite the perfectionist at the table.
