Filler at The Derby 2/1/2026 Just won against Shane 9 B 9-0

Someone must agree with me a little bit because they keep experimenting with rules. Racking the nine on the spot, break boxes, rotating the break, smaller pockets, and so on.

The powers that be recognized the game could be improved. One crazy thing they could do is create a neutral ball so that they can be racked as 10 ball. Then remove the neutral ball after the break, Or just play 10 ball.
I must say I do prefer winner breaks but no Hill games, you must win by two.
I don’t know who is to be credited to as being the one who initially said it, but I’ve heard many say it over the years, “pool is the cruelest of games”. It truly is, because in its purest form, you’re not guaranteed a turn at the table, and if you don’t take advantage of the opportunities you do get, you’re not guaranteed another opportunity.

The break is key not only in 9 ball, but in all disciplines of pocket billiards, 10 ball, 1 pocket, banks, 14:1, Snooker. Why, because it’s all about controlling the table.

This isn't golf or other sports where “everyone gets a turn”. The funny thing is, all those here that are enthusiasts of the this beautiful game all learn this very early on when they take up the game. To me, it’s one of its most beautiful aspects.

You mention there must be others that agree with you and reference the constant “tinkering with the rules”. That’s something that’s only really occurred in the last 20 years or so, and you say “the powers that be recognized that the game can be improved”. That’s subjective as I and many I speak with don’t consider these rule changes improvements, it’s more like appeasing whiners that have forgotten what I mentioned above that you learn early on in this game, you’re not guaranteed a turn, and need to take full advantage of the opportunities you get. The game shouldn’t be changed because some people, through hard work and dedication rise to a skill level that others don’t aspire to, or can’t achieve. Those of tender sensibilities should play 3 cushion or other forms where you’re guaranteed a turn, or pick a new sport where everyone gets a turn to play like golf or bowling. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why did I miss the ball? Did my aim fail, or was it my mechanics?

As the reputable Mr. Jewett stated, you really need to see video of yourself to get to the bottom of it.

I lurked here on this site for a long time and used to laugh at the flame wars that took place here with the “aiming people”, to where they eventually gave them their own sub forum for all that nonsense. Aiming is a pretty straight forward thing. Jeremy Jones said it best I think, “you seldom see good players miss a ball and say wow I really aimed that one bad”.

99.9% of the time it’s something in your process/mechanics. All it takes is a slight movement, the subtle lift of the head etc. to cause the miss. This is why hiring a certified instructor that does video is so valuable. They can get right to the source of your issue and get you on the road to correcting it. Good luck 🍀

I'd say that the general consensus is for you to seriously consider buying the cue and if you really enjoy playing with it order a extra shaft for it and enjoy playing with a sweet looking cue !
Then after your purchase it then you get the enjoyment of figuring out how to hit the cue ball in such a way to make it do exactly what you want it to do ha ha ! Yes , I've learned there's a sweet spot in finding out how much force or finesse is needed for a pool cue to come to life while you're using it ! Then once you find it the game of pool truly becomes addictive !

If Banks and One Pocket had a Fargo Rating system, then what players do you think would be in the 800's, or considered Elite level players?

Ultimately if you strike the cueball well playing one game, you will playing another too. Sure, Justin Hall is a much better banker than rotation player, don’t think that’s debatable, but he is the exception not the rule.

Schon is the Mercedes of the production cue world.
Well, that’s a generalization because it has a long track record & Schon had up and downs.
It started out like a shooting star and was extraordinarily good and later on not so much so.

There are certain periods of time when Schon was absolutely top notch, like Bill Stroud was.
And of course, Bob’s cue making under his own name testifies to his truly remarkable skills.

Schon is still a name that commands attention but not nearly like when Bob Runde was there.
