US Open 08/18-23

I'm amazed that people saw it in real time. Perhaps a TV thing? I was there in person and not a single person said a single word about a foul then or after.

It also looked to me like the nine rocked in some of these super-slo, super-close replays. Then I tried something else: I took my hand and covered the top half of the nine ball and watched the replay again. If it budged, it should still be apparent. But nothing. In fact as long as there is no shadow still dancing over the 9b there is no apparent movement of the 9b to me. But as soon as some of the shadow is visible, there is the slightest appearance of movement. Therefore, I conclude that most of what appears to be slight movement is most likely just be a trick of the light/shadows. If I were a head ref, then even replay would be inconclusive to me and I would be forced to call no foul.

Let's not make this a bigger issue than it is. There is a nonzero chance that the smallest perceptible foul may have occurred. There is a much bigger chance that other non-called fouls occurred during this tournament, particularly on the outer tables. However, none of that detracts from the tournament, or from Yapp's amazing play and accomplishment.

Congratulations, Aloysius!
I watched it just once on the replay….I saw nothing. That’s what you see in real time…..good enough for me.
If we’re going to use modern technology to call shots, how many massé shots are going to stand up to that scrutiny?
If I was gambling, I’m gonna pay.

Yapp winning, with a foul! Just like Maradona making a goal with his hands :D

What I know, having played for more than a few years, is that your pool cue becomes a part of your body — an extremely sensitive part of your body.

In some instances you can foul with your pool cue and be fully confident that *no one* but you knows you’ve fouled… unless there is video that can be slowed down and rewound.

IMO, no player can foul and claim they were unaware.

How steep is the learning curve

If I wanted to buy a cheap lathe to simply for installing my own tips and keeping them shaped?
I use a small Machinist lathe for tip installation....
That way, you can use the tailstock to set up a tip centering tool-which will certainly assist in installing a replacement tip with accuracy and success.
I also recommend the Loctite Ultra Control Gel Version of their super glue-Let that glue cure 15 minutes is Manufactures recommendation-
GO TO YOUTUBE-SEVERAL GOOD VIDS SHOWING TIP INSTALLATION-
*** Doesn't hurt to mask off the ferrule with some good quality masking tape either-makes sure you don't get the glue on the cue ferrule

Curious to know what tipped your reason. Per anything posted in this thread the 9 did not oscillate. It did move to the left and the curious are left to extrapolate - imaginate if you will, a foul.

On refs: minimum of 2 refs - at least in these big finals. In the Philippines, they have guys marking all trouble situations. Even single refs should be this on the ball. The interference doesn't bother any of those players.
Must admit that my eyesight is not as good as it once was, and I may not have seen this clearly even on the replay. Still, I saw enough to feel sure this was a foul, although one not easily detected.

I like your comments with regard to officiating and had no idea how it is done in the Philippines. Perhaps this incident will give rise to discussion of how to improve the officiating. After all, even on day six of a Matchroom major, there are still several referees in attendance, as three different ones officiate the last three matches.

I have it, Do you?

I have so much pool stuff, cues that are very desirable but not perfect, tons of extra shafts that are playable but not perfectly straight, gobs of scuffers and accessories that just aren't worth taking pictures of and trying to sell individually. Cues that you just don't care about but don't feel like messing with even though they really are pretty cool. I have some Huebler stuff for example that's rather nice... but not something I want to photo and explain and deal with so I'll probably die with it. I keep thinking someday I may put it all in a giant box and sell it all as a lot, But I never do. How bout you?
Same.

I have it, Do you?

To answer your question, I probably do.

Like guns, I have pool cues I have forgotten I owned. For instance, someone asked recently how many CF shafts I had. I had 17 at the time and forgot that 2 were missing. I don't know how many butts I have at the moment.

When new folks join the leagues I'm in, I find something in the range of a Viking Valhalla out of my collection to give them. I figure the $35-50 investment is worth it to get more folks into the sport.

You know plenty yet you posted that specific message? When you piss off half of a forum, is it you, or the rest of the people who are crazy?

I know you're a big toughie who likes to sit at a table holding hands with other big toughies, but your post was out of line and missed the point of the message. It was a personal attack in a thread that didn't justify it.

I'm pretty sure I'm crazy, it makes more sense that it is me and not everybody else.
