The graph shows that a rolling cue ball produces follow at near full-ball hits which is nothing new. What is interesting is how it also produces follow at really thin shots (and explains some of my scratching for very thin shots near pockets).

As far as the half-ball hit, that produces close enough to 30-degree cue-ball direction for my play.

Q: What beginner pool tip do you wish you learned sooner?​

1.) If you have been playing for years, and you aren't getting any better...find a different group of "friends."

2.) If you have beaten someone 4 games in a row, AND they still want to double the bet, put your cues away and go home.

3.) Unless you are planning on turning pro, develop good fundamentals, and have fun.

4.) Stay away from NPR.

Bob: This was a great find! Thank you for sharing it. The production was so well done, right down to that awesome dog looking up at the table. Fascinating to learn that the playing surface would have been parquet. I too wondered about the balls and was guessing that they may have been fashioned from wood. Thanks again for this jewel.

However, I mostly agree, because I don't think most 'beginners' have any idea what the sidespin is for. Like, they think it helps them pot balls--and I do realize that for some shots it can--but because they don't already understand positioning with speed, and/or controlling the cue ball with top/bottom, they don't realize that hitting side doesn't really do anything for them. More to the point, they don't know what it *should* do for them.

Just when you are mentioning cushions for position reminded me one extra thing I'd say to learners. If you come of a cushion at a shallow angle, then side wont have much of a chance to take effect. If you are coming off a cushion at a narrow angle for a 1 cushion escape from a snooker you have more chance of changing the ball direction with top or draw.

In terms of learning the effect of side I think doing it when kicking out of snookers is better than when potting. You don't have to worry about the effect of side on making the pot and can see more clearly the effect side has had on the cue ball.
