Larry Price....amateur????

The only ones who think that a true amateur will ever snap off the SBE "amateur" events are sadly the true amateur pool players.

No one who has posted in this thread really knows how great it is to see Larry win this event. Whether he is a pro or not really makes no difference.

Larry just came out of the hospital the week before the event. His heart has been giving him alot of problems. In fact, it was only beating 18 beats per minute if that tells you anything. I talked to him on the phone and like all great players he was lying in a hospital bed swearing he was playing the best pool of his life. Go figure!!

It was a tremendous feat what Larry did. Can't take anything away from him here. And by the way, Larry does play pool for a living. Might not be much living but it is what it is....

Congrats Larry on the win!!!!! Hey to you too, Angie!!!

Pro or not, winning that event is an accomplishment.

At least 25% of the field was capable of catching a gear and being very dangerous.

And there you have it...the best way to determine who can play in an amateur event -- anyone with a heartbeat less than 30 beats a minute

Good thread with a lot of excellent input. What is worth noting, though, is that pro-speed players are always found in the field at top amateur events. Whether this is a good or bad thing can be debated, but what cannot be debated is that it makes for some good viewing.

Not long ago, there was an AZB thread comparing the DCC to the annual BCA event in Las Vegas. Some dared to call those playing in the BCA amateur events bangers. This couldn't be further from the truth. There are always numerous world beaters in these fields, and it makes for some fantastic competition.

For those who will attend BCA week in May, you are in for a treat when you sweat the late rounds of any of the amateur events.

I just heard that Larry Price won the "amateur" event at SBE. Is this the same Larry Price that won the banks division at Derby City in 2008. Kind of makes it impossible for us true amateurs to have a prayer..... Must have slipped under the Hopkins radar.

I know i told Allen to his face that it was a bunch of boll shit that Larry is in the amateur along with Jason Klatt, Matt clatterbuck what the ****! How about MingNg in the womens amateur is that right? what about the people that are real amateurs that want to win and have no shot because there playing PRO'S Allen u retard

Ming won the Women's Amateur Nationals in Seattle, and features all of the regional tour champions. She has also played ONE pro women's event in the past FIVE years.

And Allen Hopkins is not a retard. I'm wondering if you are from this post.

To me the problem with a player like Larry Price being allowed to play in an ameteur event is that he has won a pro event recently. Someone mentioned Appelton playing in these events a few years ago and Rodney Morris as well but they hadn't won anything in a pro event before that. I have no problem with unknown monsters playing in these events but once you've knocked off a major pro event there is no question as to your status.

Can you say Bobby Jones, the legendary golfer?

You don't have to be a "professional" player to play good. Of course I don't know if Bobby Jones ever took a cash prize for his victories.

he never took a cash prize. And back then the rules on amateur status were pretty tough compared to today. During his playing career he did not get to play golf all day year round, he went to school without golf scholarships, and he had a career later. Back then working in a pro shop made you a pro and there was probably still a stigma attached to being a pro in many circles. Jones did, however, take money for golf skill and reputation after he retired from competition. I don't think anybody dared to call him a pro however. I don't think it was taken well back then to point out he took money for instructional films and such. In his case he was regarded as an amateur despite doing things after retirement against the rules of amateur status. Now you see amateurs wearing logos advertising golf companies in tournaments where they might get on TV. Something like that might have been a scandal in Jones's day, and IMO should be banned now, even if there is no cash paid for it. Golf is tighter than most sports but not as tight as it used to be or should be IMO

The several posts on the amateur rules in golf are good. But as has also been pointed out, pool isn't golf. The consequence is the inevitable argument over whether a given skilled player is a pro. Without strict rules by one organizing body, there will always be the occasional problem. But IMO if you sign up to play a tournament with prize money, you can't really complain about somebody else's "amateur status" since you are both playing for prize money.

Rodney Morris?!

Dude is a Champion. Ever hear of a little event called the US Open?

I believe Rodney's open amateur victory at the Super Billiards Expo was at the first one -- which was held in Secaucus, NJ rather than in Valley Forge -- in March of 1993. As I recall, "The Hawaiian" was a known force in gambling circles at this time, but was not yet an established professional tournament champion.

> I agree, anyone that has won DCC titles should not be considered an amateur. By definition,Larry IS a pro, making 100% of his total monthly income off pool,he doesn't work a full-time job that I know of,but maybe he does.

As far as guys like that ruining it for the local players and true amateurs that use competition like this as a measuring instrument,I've always looked at it like this. If you are going to win say anything from a 64 player high-level tournament on up,you are gonna have to beat 3,4 or more players that would probably beat you on a daily basis to win the tournament anyway,so that shouldn't matter. Besides, doesn't it make those of us that don't play for a living feel great when you step up and beat the occasional road man in an event like this? Tommy D.

Hey Christian.....you beat me in the 3rd round at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning. I made a couple of mistakes and you played better and deserved to win. What happened in your match with Craig McPartlin (boy that kid can really play!)? Did it go three sets? I really wanted to play him but you had to go and beat me didn't you:wink:

I just wanted to say it was a pleasure competing with you. But beware because next year I'll be playing more than 1.5 hours per week:)

Kind Regards,
Bob Guzik

Hey Bob,

Thanks man, yeah we had a good match. I fell completely apart when playing Craig. It went two sets. He did play well but I had a couple opportunities that I didn't capitalize on. I was missing three ball outs and it was as if I was a low D player. But like you he was a good guy and glad to have run into th both of you. There's always next year though.

Christian
