the ob skids more on a tight cloth fast table...right? I have been missing way too many easy shots since the new cloth went on. Thank you. Johnnyt
yes it does...... Male sure they are clean as well. Chalk on the ob will cause skid, and that will be enhanced by the new felt.
This is why a tight table, appears to get tighter over time. Balls stop "sliding" into the pockets.
Dead on. Johnnyt. For a while I blamed the new cloth for my bad playing. Now I blame the old cloth for my bad playing. Come to think of it, this seems to go in cycles.![]()
I have noticed the same thing. I just installed Granito Tournament 2000 on my Gold Crown I. This cloth is very fast. The OB skids more on a tight cloth fast table...right? I have been missing way too many easy shots since the new cloth went on. Thank you. Johnnyt
Pardon me for asking but, what do you guys mean by the balls skidding?
It's not same as sliding?
what I've found is with the new cloth you don't have to slug the ball to get where you are going.....and we all know one factor in skids are light follow shots hit with slow speed.......along with dirt, chalk, some ball cleaning stuff, and for sake of argument stroke IMO.
on brand new cloth I try to go an extra rail, or hit a lot of firm stun shots, along with getting a more straight in positions.
have fun,
G.

The first 8 hours with clean Centennials, the table seemed to "slide" a lot. Now that the balls are dirty, I am noticing the skid on almost every soft stroked shot. The table is much harder to play on than my Gold Crown III with 3 year old Simonis 860.
what exactly is a skid? I never heard of it in any book or reading in 30 years and just starting hearing about it by watching TAR matches and listening to the commentators. These commentators are very unknowable and they make it sound like any dirt on the balls or cloth causes this and is the reason for 99% of the missed shots in these matches.
the thing is the tables and balls are in great shape compared to what I (and probably most everyone) normally play on so I'm thinking I'm a pro but only miss because of skidding
seriously though what causes it? dirty ball, dirty cloth, clean cloth, clean balls a combo of both, what???
I believe they are referring to "throw". The ob is thrown off the intended aim line because it skids just a bit before it starts rolling on the intended line.
Dirt or chalk on the cb and/or ob will cause this, as will slick cloth where the fabric does not have enough roughness to stop the ball from skidding... or being thrown off line. Often it is recommended to use running english to help keep this phenomena from occurring.
I hope I'm thinking of it correctly. This is the first time I've stepped out of line and tried to answer a technical question of this sort. I'm pretty new at this stuff.
I agree with your assessment Johnnyt. Slick cloth.... fast cloth.. will enable ob's to skid/slide/be thrown.
I hope one of the physicists will jump in and confirm.
