Looking for mentor in Orange County, CA

I'm looking for a strong mentor in the OC area to help bump my game up to the next level. I guess I would say I'm an intermediate player. If it makes any difference, I'm a self taught (through books, videos, lots of pool watching) player. I've been playing for almost 8 years. I just want some really good analysis of my game. I run practice drills every once in a while, play in tournaments, don't gamble. The most I ever gambled for was a race to 9 for $100 and it wasn't even my money (I won). Some people say all I need to do is start gambling more and more to get that edge that will take me there, but I want an opinion from a a strong and serious player. Any help would be appreciated.

I dont know about being a mentor but we could shoot some? where are you in south oc? I am in mission viejo. Do you play in any leagues?

I used to play in a league at Q Club in Costa Mesa. Actually played in that 9 ball league for a few years. I'm in Irvine. I usually shoot now in Cypress at Hot Shots. Really great pool room.

I smell a ring game, boys. I'm just across the freeway from you dr2112, and Aunty Dan and i4pool are both in South County.

Go to Danny K's in Orange and ask for Danny. If you can convince him to work with you, you will be very fortunate. The man KNOWS pool! How to play and how to win.

True that. Danny played real well at the Predator 10 Ball in Vegas. I didn't know he was teaching. Also very good is Jay's cover boy, Dave Hemmah, out of Hard Times.

You got Phil Capele in Midway City .
I think he does some instructing.

Interesting. I knew Dave Hemmah did lessons, but was too shy back then to ask for help. Who should I go to first, Dave or Danny? I never knew Danny gave lessons. All I know from Danny K's was that Wayne Norcross gave lessons.

Call Big Wave Dave. You know he's available and has been the house pro at Hard Times for years. If it doesn't work for you then you can always try someone else.

I'm up for a ring game. Weekends work best for me. I live close to dr2112 and we play quite often. We should set something up

dr2112 has a nice Brunswick Metro 8' at his house so we meet there a lot, and we also play at the Blue Dolphin in Dana Point as well.

So then you know Pao. The BD is my home room as well, it is like 5 minutes from my house.

I'm up for it, let's pick a day and meet there. I PM'd Aunty Dan and i4pool, hopefully they will check in shortly.

What are good times for you guys? Weekend days are usually good for me.

Very cool, perhaps we have met before. I'm not sure about dr2112's schedule but I am free on Saturdays and Sundays during the day as well. Pao opens up at noon if you would like to meet then. I'm sure we can round up a few people to play a ring game.

There is even an 8-ball tournament at Mulligan's down the freeway off of Pico. Perhaps you have been there. That starts around 3pm if we can't get enough people to come down to BD. Eric, the guy who runs it usually likes to have a ring game after the tournament there as well.

I'm in, but not on an 8 footer.

Hey hatur of poo, when are you at Hot Shots? Maybe we can play some. PM me.

The Blue Dolphin has four really nice Olhausen Pro 9 footers downstairs. I'm not a huge fan of 8 footers either but dr2112 has a really nice setup at his place and it's free.

Danny does know

Jay's right (again). Danny is around most afternoons at DK's-playing a 'friendly game' with some similarly talented locals. If time permits-go watch-these guys have different styles-but all are good. If you can play with Danny-you can play. If not - you will at least likely improve.

There are 'lessons' and there is instruction. Which do you seek?

It's worth checking out if you want to improve.

Note: IMHO It always costs to learn-time,money,inconvenience,embarrassment-but always there is a cost.

Have fun

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Olhausens but it's real close to my house and Pao's a good guy so that's where I usually play.

This weekend is a little tough for me as I've got a party on Saturday and need to get some work done this weekend, but next weekend may be good.

dave hasnt touched a cue in a while . he is a great guy to learn from but he is not the house pro at hartimes any more. when i see him next i can ask him if he is still willing to give lessons.
