Looking for mentor in Orange County, CA

the blue dolphin is a dump and they tables are circus tables, not close to level and they have buckets.

The problem is for at least the next week or two, it's like a 45 minute drive to the nearest decent Gold Crowns (Cypress or Bellflower). South County is not Brunswick territory, that's for sure.

There are a lot worse places to play in southern cali in my opinion. The BD isn't a dump by any means and Pao keeps his tables in very good condition. They have been level as long as I have been playing there (several years now) and they look almost close to new the way he pays attention to them. The pockets aren't exactly Hard Times diameter but they aren't 5" either. Probably closer to 4 3/4 or 4 7/8 inches. I'm sure if you knew Pao you wouldn't talk trash about his establishment.

weekends i am usually pretty free to whatever .. I will probably be at the Muligans tourney on SAT

I have not played upstairs at BD, but the downstairs Olhausen's play right up there with the best of them

I've been up there once. The tables are not Olhausens and they are not worth playing on. The downstairs tables play good - for Olhausens.

That's what I have heard but have no time there. The food at the dolphin is probably if not the best I have had.

Is the Dolphin in Dana Point Harbor?
Is the upstairs barbox?

No, it's not in the harbor. It's on northbound PCH, where the northbound and southbound lanes (Del Prado) are divided, just north of Amber Lantern St.

The upstairs tables are 9', I'm not sure of the brand, but not top quality, imo. They have only one bar box, coin-fed, downstairs. I've never not gotten a table downstairs except once on a Saturday night. They do have an APA league that uses the downstairs tables one night a week I believe, but I usually go there in the afternoon, so that has not been an issue.

I'm in for a ring game....

Very cool, perhaps we have met before. I'm not sure about dr2112's schedule but I am free on Saturdays and Sundays during the day as well. Pao opens up at noon if you would like to meet then. I'm sure we can round up a few people to play a ring game.

There is even an 8-ball tournament at Mulligan's down the freeway off of Pico. Perhaps you have been there. That starts around 3pm if we can't get enough people to come down to BD. Eric, the guy who runs it usually likes to have a ring game after the tournament there as well.

Let me know if this goes down, I'll come play if you guys don't mind????

Hi Jaden, I think we met at the NCS 9-ball qualifier a few weekends ago. Your name is Kevin right? I think we played 2nd round and you got some bad rolls that match. Anyway, if you'd like to meet at the Blue Dolphin on Saturday I might be able to round up a few people for a ring game. If not we could just match up and play if you'd like. Also there is a Mulligan's 8-ball tournament at 3pm just 3 exits down the 405 off of Pico on barboxes.

To address the original subject of this post: I'd second/third, whatever, the suggestions you go hang out as often as you can at Danny K's, or, if you can stand the traffic, Hardtimes in L.A. The best way to develop a mentoring relationship is to find a location that has as many people of a higher ability than you and develop your game with them. "When the student is ready the teacher will appear", or some such hippy nonsense, applies here.

Or you can just buy a mentor, by setting up regular lessons with a Pro, or a Pro teacher. (NOT the same thing, and finding out which will work best for you is the trick.)

To address the tangential thread, in which DogsPlayingPool cunningly inserted the seeds of the PFASOCRG*, well there is a Gold-Crown style 9' AMF table in my garage with new tournament blue Simonis on it and an open bar**.

Thanks everyone for offering me some insight. It's been a while since I've been to Danny K's, but maybe I'll check it out sometime this weekend. I love the first two tables at Hot Shots though... Maybe I'll play at both places on Saturday.

Wow that is a killer setup ! When do you guys usually meet up to play? I would definitely be interested in learning more about the PFASOCRG.

Hey ... who are all you people in my neck of the woods? I'm in Costa Mesa, not far from QClub. Any of you know me???

I'm up for a ring game. Weekends work best for me. I live close to dr2112 and we play quite often. We should set something up

Darlene, I know you. You played in Calvin's league once or twice. My name is Art. I used to play there and I've against you before.

I may miss out on the inaugural event since this weekend doesn't look good for me and next weekend is our anniversary (not the Brunswick kind). I'm in though, as soon as I can make it. Please keep me in the loop, I would love to have this become a regular thing and sure look forward to meeting all you guys that I haven't already had the pleasure (that would be i4pool, Aunty Dan, and Jaden).

BTW, as nice as that set-up of Aunty Dan's looks, it plays even better. That is one very well set up piece of billiard equipment.
