When I used to hang my hat in Hermosa, the pier at Hermosa Bch was a cool spot, assuming you are gonna be around the beach.
If you wanna hit the club scene, there's plenty to do in West Hollywood, on Sunset. The lines to get in can be rough, though.
Of course, just walking up and down Hollywood Blvd can be good for people watching. Check out the Hollywood walk of fame. Start around Hollywood and Gower.

I think if I were in LA (oh, wait a minute, I am in LA) I'd hit Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Blvd. It's a bit tacky, but fun and worth seeing.
Maybe the La Brea Tar Pits
For pool, I'd definitely hit Hard Times Billiards
And if you like a nice beach atmosphere, the Santa Monica Pier, or I'd drive down to Huntington Beach (Surf City USA).
Lastly, I'd get myself a Zagats for here -- lots of real good eating in and around LA.

My favorite thing to do in L.A. is rent a nice convertible and just drive around. I usually spend a day driving Wilshire, Sunset, & Hollywood Boulevards and take the Pacific Coast Highway up through Malibu.
At the end of the day, check out Hollywood Billiards. Several AZ'ers go there, so you could probably arrange a small gtg.

One thing no one has pointed out Joey is drive time. If you look at a map and say to yourself "At home this would take 20 minutes.". Plan on an hour, maybe an hour and 20 minutes.... Surface streets are usually the best to take during the day to early evening, the freeways are usually a bad bet during daylight hours. Don't talk on the cell while driving it's hands free only. Watch and make sure that you don't try to sneak thru traffic lights when they turn yellow and get caught in the intersection when it turns red, if you do there will be plenty of people that will tell you what they really think, lol....

Hollywood and the WOF. You have to go just so you can say been there, done that, go ahead and get a t-shirt as well... Hollywood is pretty nice now. It used to be a real dump but they have turned things around since the last time I was there. Best to visit for the first time during the day but I prefer Hollywood at night on a weekend.
Griffith Park was pretty cool but I haven't been in 11-12 years.
Lebrea Tar Pits- 10 minutes attraction, don't go out of your way.....

Venice Beach- Must see.... You have to say, been there, done that....
Philippes Sandwich Shop- Near the 110 and 101 / Dodgers Stadium. You've got to sweat a French dipped sandwich at Philippes! Slap some the hot mustard on it.... Any soup they have is money.....

Saw, as you mentioned, traffic can be a bear at times. Aside from the obvious (rush hour day and night), traffic can happen at off hours, when you wouldn't expect it. I remember leaving West hollywood to drive back to the beach via the 405, late at night and...sitting in 30 MPH traffic on the friggin freeway. Still, for a tourist, stick to the freeways. Don't try a shortcut thru da Hood...

I've lived here almost all my life and really haven't done the tourist thing until just recently.
I highly recommend the "Dearly Departed Tour". The tour guide is very good and never leaves a dull moment, and he knows Hollywood inside and out, including the scandals.

JMHO but I would come to LA to walk on a pier, go to an amusement park or go tot he beach. If I want to do the above I would go to places that are KNOWN for those things.
I believe catching some of the local flair is best. Things like the Brea Tar pits while not overly spectacular cant be done many places.
Whats LA known for??? Stars, Movies and TV.
Visit a movie studio, seeig a live taping, try and get on a game show or in the an audience. Many companys have free tickets to come watch a live taping.
Hit Rodeo and Beverly Hills to see them both.
Hit Manns and that area (briefly as its not that nice).
Check out the Getty Museum is thats your cup of tea
Find out if a local fair or festival is going on
pick a named hollywood restaurant and dine there hoping to catch a
star or two. Soak in the LA atmosphere. (get out your wallet .LOL)
Griffith observatory would be another great place.
Obviously if the person visiting had any special interest then there might be other things.

I was there recently and noticed it changed back to Grauman's.
Update: On Jan 11, 2000, it was announced that the entire Mann's theatre chain, including GRAUMAN'S CHINESE Theatre, has been purchased by a partnership of Warner Bros and Paramount Studios (WF Cinema Holdings) after the Mann's theatre chain filed for bankruptcy protection last year. They have now changed the name back to the original "Grauman's Chinese Theatre."
