Putnam and Bryant no-show World Championship

The ban only involves WPA World Championships. Not the US Open or any other event like that. It is only the World 8-Ball, 9-Ball and 10-Ball.

You have to remember that by both players accepting their invitations and then by not going, it robbed two US players of attending the event. Even if they had notified the BCA later that they had changed their minds, then the BCA could have notified the promoter and something could have been done before the first day of play to allow two more players into the event.

I assure you that both players were notified when they accepted the invites that this penalty would come into play if this happened, and a precedent had already been set with Ronnie Wiseman being barred for two years after no-showing an event two years ago.

This makes more sense. Knowing that the invitations were accepted and the consequences were given during that transaction between the governing body and the players, then things are as they should be.

I didn't know if this was a rule that the WPA & BCA assumed all pro players know or if they had a verified way of knowing the players were aware of the rule.

For anyone that thinks the punishment doesn't fit the crime, remember that the players were told what the punishment would be when they confirmed they would attend.

Thanks for the clarification.

I'm lining up with the WPA on thjis one. Well over 100 players (from all over) battled every day trying to win a spot in this elite field. They had ten 64 man qualifiers and only one winner in each one! These 64 man qualifiers were great fields, full of excellent players. The very first qualifier for filipino players did award two spots. This will give you an idea of how coveted a spot in this tournament was.

And to get invited and just blow it off is totally irresponsible IMO. All they had to do was inform the very same person who invited them. What makes it worse is that it appears they knew they weren't going well in advance. They just chose not to inform anyone of their decision. Two other American players could have replaced them. VERY unprofessional!

If it's true that they didn't advise the BCA of their absence, then the 2-year suspension is too lenient. This is the WPC for gosh's sake. They could have run two more qualifiers for their spots.

Actually it is worse if the two spots were spots destined for Americans. This means that the two no-shows cost two OTHER Americans who truly wanted the spots to miss a chance to play in the event and had their spots taken by qualifiers, one of whom is now playing in a spot that was initially supposed to go to an American.

The spots would not have went to qualifiers at all if these two had given their intentions of not playing well in advance. There is a good chance the two spots could have been filled by the next Americans down the list of determining who gets the spots. The USA is lucky that Ernesto got one of the spots at least.

They have Putnam listed on the brackets for the first day!

Group: A
Table Number: 3
Putnam--SCORE: 9---WINNER
VS
Hybler--SCORE: 3

Yes, the real time scoring guys didn't know about the issues and just saw a result on the table that was originally supposed to have the Putnam match on it.

Shawn did not play that match.

I don't think it is possible for Putnam or Bryant to finish on top of this field. I think they saved money by just staying away imo.

a very sad sentiment . . .

I like what Lebron "King" James said that basketball is what he do best and the best way he can represent his country when the likes of Kobe and other NBA standouts declined to do so.

The minute they were announced, I was surprised to see those names. Do either of those guy EVER travel internationally?

Hey Mark, you're back from your long 1 gig every other month tour.

Ready to play yet?

It would be interesting to see if they come up with some excuse, or if they have any remorse at all, for costing 2 other players a genuine opportunity at a world class event.

Will they be sorry, will they bristle and become defensive when questioned about their actions?

Only time will tell if they decide to speak up on their own behalf.

I wonder why they haven't given their version yet? Didn't they post many a lot on this forum just a couple of weeks ago?

I know Mr. Putnam and have had dealings with him so I can attest to his "very selfish" comment. I seem to recall Mr. Putnam not really enjoying his trip to Taiwan a few years ago and am surprised that he accepted the invitation to this event. I also know Mr. Bryant and he is a generous, and genuine young man. I have a fuzzy memory of Mr. Bryant also going to Taiwan and not enjoying the experience, which might account for his lack of desire to go to this event also. I cannot say for certain that this is the case but there is a little voice in the back of my head trying to remind me of something along these lines.

On the surface this sounds like Putnam and Bryant spit in the face of the WPA. But we haven't heard from them, and until then, it's premature to go beyond conjecture and speculation. Maybe Putnam was sick (he has chronic health issues) and maybe he did call the WPA, albeit after the official notification deadline. I heard he spent 17 hours under a bench for a layover one time he went to the far east (maybe the Taiwan travel you mention URackm). Maybe it was doctor's orders. Why he hadn't posted here yet, we don't know. I hope he's ok.

Maybe Charlie B had a reason too. I don't know what his state of mind was after finishing 1 spot out of the money in the controversial UPL tournament. But even if he was dealt a bad hand there, that IMO would not justify renegging on his committment to the WPA.

We simply don't know their reasons. It looks real bad on them so far and I suspect this thread will apply some pressure for them to tell the pool world why. I suspect we'll know, sooner or later.

I like you a lot KK9, and this is not in any way to knock you.

I just find it a bit funny that you are saying this after the thread about the b&r's that you started and kept bumping, even though we never got a version from the people that were knocked on...
