What does it take to become a Champion?

I must be a weak M.F., cause for some reason, I can't make a ball, and forgot how to aim again! Right after this thread! It's apparent to me that I don't have the gift lol. :frown: Although I have never heard of a Viagra eating contest.. that was hilarious.

Target?

again i respect what your saying but believe me i didnt start this im just a target because im a good player and use my real name.

I think you underestimate the level of respect you have on this forum. One AZ'er backed you in the US Open, and 10 others backed you in the DCC Ring Game (am I forgetting anything else?)

Sure you probably have some haters on here, but I think the number of people you have on here who will put up their money to support you far outweighs that.

This is a community of people who love the game, and most would like to see players like yourself get more respect and make more money.

You may not respect the way we play, but I think you should respect this community for the support it has given you.

i show people on here the same amount of respect they show me.
some show alot some show none.

hi

There is a kid here who needed money to go to a tournament and AZ members helped him out. That type of story is heart warming.
Having a pro say I wanted your money but didn’t really need it, is a little less inspiring. :)

hows this for inspiring.
nobody gave me the 1300 to be nice ,they did it to try to make money and they did .we split 40,000. so please give me a break.
im done with az billiards for as long as i can stand.
im eating dinner and watching family guy. take care

C'mon people, this is not a english class. Stop with this stupid spelling crap. Weeee all
make missstaks. Ooops

My sentiment exactly!

Back on topic, I agree with John that for some people, the path to being a champion is much easier due to having an innate talent for the game. If you cannot make a mark at the regional level within a couple years of picking up the game then most likely, you won't go on to make a mark nationally with even many hours of practice.

Within a very short period of time at Hard Times, he was having some local top pros declining his challenges so his talent for the game was apparent from the start way before his US Open and Reno wins.

Unfortunately John is right, no body would give you jack unless there is something
at the end. Amen

They just have to know any one or two things that aren't on AZB already

I can't tell how a friends cue is looking like, and I am having trouble figuring out what my first cue looked like 10 years ago. How can you expect people remembering what a cue looked like almost 30 years ago? :D

Locksmith ;)

Roy,

John is running a bluff. He can't produce anyone that knows anything about me from that time period that isn't on AZB already or I haven't recently told someone. They don't have to know everything I requested, I'll settle for enough to prove they knew me from anyone that claimed they beat me regularly. Where did we play? What was I called there? Was I using a light cue or dark? Light or dark wrap? What did my partner look like? What did I wear? What girl was I running with? Where did I keep my money? The list could go on for a long time and everything I ask is distinctive about me. A friend recognized me years later from across a large dark room by where I kept my money.

Anyone that can't name at least two or three of these things accurately is either mistaken or lying. More likely they simply don't exist. Notice that John's story is constantly changing and he is never backing up his claims with anything substantial even after I offered cash if he could back up his BS. There are a handful of people on AZB that have met me in the last few years. I think that all will tell you that I walk my own path and do my own thing. Anyone that knew me well enough to tell John anything at all about me would remember some other things about me too. Remember they are supposedly remembering how I played twenty-five or thirty-five years ago. Interesting memory to remember that but nothing else about me. I remember how maybe a dozen people or so played from that era, none of the rest made enough of an impression for me to remember. I can describe every one of those people too.

I'm calling more BS and evasion on John's part. He has started something he can't finish but ego won't let him quit playing silly games. He has been skating around like butter on a hot griddle trying to get himself out of this foolishness he started. Tall tales and evasion are all he has. He keeps trying to make me look like an ass so I'll keep right on busting his fairy tales.

family guy is back on and trust me its more important than anything you got to say to me.

Unfortunately John is right, no body would give you jack unless there is something

hi

funny thing about this whole thread is i said for the top players it came easier and quicker than the average bear.
shooting arts might be one of those guys that the game came easy too.
at any rate if i find out who he is and all the tourneys he won and great players he played even, ill be the first to apologize .

Thanks for all of your opinions. I hate that it became a argumentative thread. I will enjoy to play this game and will continue to compete but take it up a notch and let the cards fall where they may....
Thanks again!!

No John..If that was the only thing you said, there would never have been any argument. I fully agree with you on that point.

You also said that Champions are born, almost immediately identifiable when they pick up a cue, and can't be made.. And some of us disagree with you.

The problem is we have given you specific examples of champions who took years and years to get there, but you insist we don't know what we are talking about. A lot of the rest of us can disagree respectfully with someone, and you can't.

That's okay though. All of us know someone like that.

A bit heated at times, but a pretty good thread.

I think the lesson here is that fanatcial dedication and hard work is almost certainly YOUR best shot at reaching YOUR potential, but a very select few have the kind of potential that makes it possible to reach the game's highest heights, and some of them may even achieve great things without great devotion to devloping and maintaining excellence.

It's like this in all facets of life. When you have a gift for something, it's truly hard to fathom how others work so hard without coming near your own abilities. Think about anything you have a god-given gift for, and you will realize that there are those who work tirelessly and endlessly but still fall far short of your own capabilites.

That's just the way life is.

As long as you are enjoying playing the game, and continue to try to improve your own game, you are as fortunate as any world champion.
In fact, possibly more. After all, we have fun! It's fine to work on your game, but I don't think I would like playing the game to be work.

What a telling thread...

So what Ive learned:
Anybody can be world class at anything, thats good to know forget pool Im going to go win the Tour de France. Thats just stupid

Most Champions just have all the skills they need from their first breath, Thats got to piss off guys like Jordan, Bryant who are (were) in the gym at 4am befor anybody eles, PRACTICING. and Lee Traveno must have had no idea what he was saying when he said " if you want to be a good golfer you ned to hit 1000 balls a day. Can you imagine how pissed the Olympic athelets are spending years getting ready when all they had to do was read this thread grab a snickers and show up for the medal.

Dont beleave everything you read, now this thread does prove that beyond a doubt.....

P.S. OH john you migh be a good pool player and not a bad golfer but those 2 games are not even CLOSE to the same as playing in the BIGS my friend. I would love to see your little boy frame and 2 ton ego grab a bat and take some swings with washed up pitcher like say Randy Johnson that would be a hoot....

yup but you are still tap dancing

John,

I have made no bones about not being much of a pool player now. However while you are coming with this you have ducked everything I sent your way including an offer of cold hard cash to produce any of your alleged sources that knew me. As I have said many a time in this thread, the only name I used when I was shooting pool was Hu, pronounced Hugh. Others hung nicknames on me but since I was just fine with Hu I never used any of the nicknames myself. Because of that I tended to have one nickname one place, another one another place. If your people weren't figments of your imagination I could find out if they were lying in about two minutes by asking a couple of questions as soon as I knew what they claimed as to where and when we played. To dime me they have to know at least the handle I was called and what I looked like at that time.

It isn't that hard to try to get a line on me, contact Danny Medina. Ask him about the guy he played on Plank Road north of the Baton Rouge airport when he passed through town. We parted as friends and I had a standing invitation to take a ride with him when he was in his prime. You see the picture in my avatar, that was me in '88. I don't remember if I played Danny about then or a few years earlier, close enough to ID me though although that picture looks a little woollier than I did in the flesh. We played on a bar table in a little place that barely had room for the two tables and a bar. Seems like Danny was driving an old Malibu at the time.

I heard second hand that Johnny says he doesn't remember me. It's possible but if I snapped the eight ball three times on the break calling the pocket to start the match and never made another ball it would stick in my mind. We played the same place as Danny and I.

I played Mike Massey in a joint on Airline Highway years before that. Doubt he remembers it, the only thing I remembered when I saw him a few years back was that he was pretty obnoxious when he was drinking. Definitely not knocking Mike, he and I have both had a lot of changes in our lives since then.

Anyone that knows me just from shooting pool back then and claims to know my full name is lying from the jump. Most people gambling on the road were big on fake names, Danny originally introduced himself as somebody else. Without all the easy access to check things that we have now I ignored names for the most part except as a handle to call somebody while we played. I didn't use a fake name, I just used the nickname I have toted for most of my life. It was on a handful of my businesses too.

I went to great efforts to keep people from getting a line on me then and I surely don't care if you can't get a line on me now. We both know that you were bluffing when you made the claims earlier as you pretty much admit to in the post I am responding to now. I notice that you aren't jumping to try to get the easy cash. I'm far too old and gimpy to be a threat to anyone so all any alleged source runs any risk of is being embarrassed in public if they are found to have been stretching things. Your locals don't exist and until this post you didn't even know where local was to me in those days.

I don't know what your fascination is with Family Guy, I could guess but that wouldn't be kind. Anyway, see what you can dredge up to try to divert from the fantasies you have been spinning about me and getting called on. I'm leaving out of town early in the morning and I'll check on your fractured fairy tales Sunday night or Monday if I have time. So far you have proven that every claim I have made is true with your tap dancing in replies.

As always, a perfect synopsis and excellent insight.

Thanks, SJM. I think if you would have posted this a few (20) pages ago there would have been very few arguments.

It is funny, I have been following this thread since its inception and it was clear after a while that people were defining "champion" differently and both may have been correct depending on their own definition.

if you played so good everybody on here would know who you are.

Kinda what I was thinking. Open invitation like that? In the time of Jose Parica, Buddy Hall, Louis Roberts, Keith? Good luck being some guy noone has a clue about that just so happens to play as good as those guys. I know a guy who traveled the whole of the USA playing for cash back in the 70's, he actually knew and traveled with OldHasBeen (RIP) abit from this forum, along with Buddy on occasion and Louis, what name/names might he know you by and where were you playing out of back then?
