a question for Freddy the Beard

explaining

I could understand these things but you never explain them. Every time we get to the explaining part your Tourette's acts up and the insults begin. I'm sure it's just coincidence.

pj,

You have proven incapable of understanding any explanation of mine on any subject. I have explained to the extent that anyone but you and possibly a few more can grasp just fine just as I have on every occasion. Your lack of willingness to grasp anything I type isn't the same as me not explaining.

I was privileged to study under one of the most knowledgeable and greatest instructors in his field. Taking a page from his book when dealing with students unwilling to accept his explanation of something, when it comes to explaining anything to you, it is all just magic.

The world is full of wonders beyond your comprehension. I'm sure you wake up every morning and look at that big yellow ball glowing in the East; "WOW, where did that come from!?!" The world must truly be a wondrous and exciting place for you.

Translation: You ask questions about my claims that I find inconvenient to answer. Go away.

I'm calling bull-sheet-o.

You can try and blame me if you want, but you said some time ago that you wouldn't post anything on this and related subjects -- you just cannot tolerate people questioning your techniques (that on their face, don't hold up to any kind of scientific scrutiny). As I've said before on this, I believe your techniques work -- *but not for the reasons you believe they work.* We have been over this before: sometimes great (and even good) players believe that certain techniques do things they do not -- but that does not stop them from achieving great (or good) results.

So here: I think it's just that you know you're going to get hammered on this if you throw it out there. (There is also the fact that you are on record about complaining about all the know-it-all wannabes on this site.) So you can try and blame it on me, but I will make you this deal just to prove you are full of it: go ahead and post anything you want on this subject here, and I promise to not post a thing about it.

I say this with complete confidence that you will come up with some other excuse, 50 years of knowledge or not.

Lou Figueroa

Please wait until you are willing and able to contribute something positive before posting. Thanks.

You have the right shot there. Just takes a little getting used to. I can make that shot about one out of three times. Third ball back in the corner.
If it's on page 138 of Byrne's Treasury of Trick Shots in Pool and Billiards, it's a double kiss.

There is an interesting underlying discussion on the art and science of pool that reminds me of the art and the science of medicine.

Science reduces problems to understand through simple experiments that control all possible factors to derive a rule that applies in some set of situations. This laboratory approach has much merit in the construction of generalized rules with limited application.

The art of medicine is the ability to understand the many interacting variables in one person to restore the person’s health. Science is helpful but limited and can only go so far down the road when it comes to understanding the complexities of a particular case.
For this reason the scientist realizes that his limited but well defined knowledge is only of some use in some situations.

The scientist stands in awe of the ability of the physician to use his wisdom and vast experience in uncontrolled situations to solve real problems. The physician stands in awe of the ability of the scientist to derive simple but powerful theories of why things work.

In the best of all worlds each way of looking at the world is of tremendous benefit to all of us and the world functions much better when each approaches the other with humility, a virtue that seems to be in short supply around here.

A scientist who had a PhD in chemistry was fond of saying that MDs were nothing more than applied chemists. But of course he took his children to an MD when they were “sick.” It seems to me that the scientist should be the first person to acknowledge that he or she has, by virtue of their approach, extremely limited wisdom with regard to how the world works.

Merry Christmas to all God's children.

I am a former (read "retired") BCA instructor, AND I am a Mechanical Engineer. I quit looking for absolute "proof" of why shots do what they do a LONG time ago, because you just simply can't define all things that happen on a pool table in scientific terms, and if you try, then you'll spend more time with a slide rule and a calculator in your hand than with a cue in your hand.

To the point... When times would come, and they would be many, that I had a student that just couldn't get banking, then I'd loan them my copy of "Banking with the Beard". Now, Freddie doesn't go into huge detail on HOW an WHY in his book (at least the first one, and that's the copy I have), but his methods do work. I met Freddie years ago at a tournament and I have a great respect for his banking ability and his ability to teach and explain banks. I respect Freddie, as an individual and for his knowledge.

JAY, I went downstairs and tried that shot... got it on the first try, didn't on the 2nd through about the 10th, but found the sweet spot... know what? I don't really give a huge rats a$$ why it goes, but it's a neat shot and was fun to play with... thanks. Now, I don't get around to the tournaments as much these days as I used to, so if you don't mind, on a PM, clue me a little on that two ball spot shot??? If not, no big deal, just curious and would give me something to play with tonight while the snow is flying.

Bob >>>can do a 5 page equation in a day showing what happens to cause that 3 rail in the side shot to go more often than not, but If they aren't overly insistent on getting a physics lesson they probably can't really understand anyways, can teach someone to shoot that shot in just a few minutes!

The dean of our engineering school tells the difference between a physicist and an engineer. When told they could continuously jump half way to a naked Farrah Facwett at the end of the hall the physicist said you could never get to her, the engineer immediately jumped. :grin-square:

It is an old story replace with any hot woman.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.

Well for the youngsters, you had to be there. I believe that she died of cancer and is well known for her courage. There is also a beauty in your photo if you know her story. We will all be there one day.

When Max Eberle came on here and asked for help to get to the world 14.1 championships you were the first one to jump into the thread and bash him for not posting enough tips here. As soon as he posts a tip you would be the first guy to jump on him.

Freddy, Grady and Jay post entertaining stories about a guy who would hustle people with a trick dog and you jump into the thread and go negative.

Now a guy asks Freddy, who wrote a book on bank pool, a question about banking and you start ripping Freddy and he decides not to share the tip publicly.

I think pain in the ass is kind for what you are doing here. People like you are the reason pros don't come on here and post more often. As soon as they post something the attention whores jump in and bash them in the hope they will get a reaction.

When the fans in Philadelphia booed Santa Claus I wouldn't be surprised if you were in the crowd.

I nominate you to be the head of the AZ Taliban. You like to set up straw men and blow them down, exaggerate and distend the position of anyone whose views you don't like. You come up with names like hater, and knocker, and naysayer, and pain in the ass . People like you are what kills open discussion and the free flow of ideas, so I have a name for you: Mullah Al.

would not boo Santa :-)

I didn't say it wasn't important to understand how things work, but many take an offensive approach to their line of questioning. There are many things that I know work, regardless of the science behind it. The people I take offense to most often are the ones who try to tell me it can't happen when I can clearly see that it does.

I have no quarrel with those who want to understand. I take issue with the ones who refuse to learn when they can't reason to prove it. People often argue with what they don't understand. If you want to learn, great. Some things work without understanding, regardless of if you can write the proof for it. 500 years ago, many couldn't explain the relation of the sun and earth, but the sun was there every morning.

OK. Then I guess we're good.
