Shooting pains going down my shooting arm when I play

Anyone ever have this problem? I've had it for at least a year. At first I would get it every once in a while, and when I did, I would play poorly. About a month ago I started getting it every time I shoot pool. The longer I played, the worse my pain would get, and the worse I would play. Now, starting a few days ago, I am getting shooting pains all the time, even if I don't play. The pain goes from my shoulder and down my triceps past my elbow.

Spoke to my doctor about it, didn't seem to know much about it, and gave me a little booklet telling me how to stretch. The stretching doesn't help at all. A friend of mine said it could be a pinched nerve. Anyone know what can be done to fix this?

It's pretty annoying, especially if I want to play pool. I seem to do the opposite of warming up. The longer I shoot, the worse I get.

Have you ever had any kind of back injury? Usually pains like this come from spinal issues that put pressure on your nerves. I know when I practice my break, I can get sore muscles but it's usually in the upper back and neck area. Also, posture issues can cause shooting pains.

Your doctor should probably order up some x-rays for you.

In the meantime, medicines like Advil and Motrin are usually what's recommended. If inflammation is causing the nerve problem, they reduce it.

My buddy had terrible pains stemming from a lower back injury - he went to a chiropractor and got major relief. if x-rays show nothing then it might be worth a visit to a chiropractor to see if it helps.

If you know anyone with an inversion machine give it a try.

If not, find a place with one on display and explain you want to see if it helps before you buy.

I used to have a similar problem in my right arm, and more frequently in my left leg.

Chiro helped for a short time, stretching didn't help much. Inversion fixed both.

For What Its Worth

A few years ago I started getting really bad pain in my elbow. I attributed it to using hard breaks. It got so bad that I had to go to a softer break, but it still continually bothered me.

Just on a hope that it would help, I bought one of those Q-Ray ionized bracelets and put it on my shooting wrist. Within one week my pain level was lower and within 2 weeks it was gone.

Was it the bracelet?? I am not sure, but I haven't take it off except when I go swimming and I am still pain free.

Repetitive motion inflammation caused by the fact that you are older now than you used to be. Prescription is ice and Alleve. Please be thankful that you can take Alleve, it conflicts with my blood pressure meds which leaves me with only ice. Think of those baseball pitchers soaking their arms in ice after pitching, that's what you need. Those tendons are moving back and forth over bone and now that you are an old guy, they are brittle (or more than they used to be) and now you are getting inflammation from the same repitive moves you used to get away with.

Temper everything I'm saying here with the fact that I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, but I'm betting a week of ice and Alleve and you'll be brand new.

Nice to see you posting BTW.

Alleve does marvels for my aches and pains, however, a heart doctor told me not to take it regularly for 3 reasons: It can make your stomach bleed, it is hard on the kidneys, and the third I can't remember. I take it occasionally when something is really bothering me, but not regularly.

Check your shoulders also

Recently had an MRI of my shoulder. Pains extend through the arm due to damage. The sports medicine recommendation is also a good one.

Sounds like you may have a pinched nerve in the your spine's cervical area. The only way to know for sure is to have an Orthopedic MD do an MRI.

If it is a pinched nerve, the best and quickest way to get relief is to get some cortisone shots in the affected area (usually 3 or 4 shots spaced out over 2 months). The pain and discomfort usually goes away right after the first injection.

The main thing is to see an Orthopedic doctor first.

Get well soon!

Oh

And while you got that big bag of ice out, be sure to put it on your head for about an hour. If that doesn't change how you feel, nothing will.

I want to get one of those. I heard that your spine can be compressed as much as two inches over time. People who come back from the space station are two inches taller than when they went up.

I have several back problems. Compression fractures in the L4-L5 area, Degenerative Disc Disease, Arthritis, and Scoliosis to boot. I've been taking prescription aleve and motrin, (naproxen and ibuprofen) and it doesn't do a thing for my back or arm.

I'm gonna go try and get a massage, see if that helps. Thanks for the advice.

Left Arm, Right Arm? Shooting, and burning? Do you have Good Insurance?

If so see a Neurologist, or Orthopedic Surgeon, before the problem get bigger or you are told too much POOL!!!!

If you have NO INSURANCE Take an Asprin, and don't bother your docoter again.

Listen to this person!!! I had the same thing as you. An MRI found that I had a pinched nerve in the 4th & 5th vertebrae (neck). I forgot about a small bump that I had gotten in a rear end collision a few months before. I never called the cops. I let the dude go.

Short story...they operated the next day. A day later I went home from the hospital. That was two years ago. I also have had both hips replaced. I have that Arture Rightus thing also.

Do you have health insurance? If so, Quit screwing around and get an MRI. It can only get worse if you don't get it fixed.

I've had similar pain, and it happened away from the table too.

Pinched nerve is what I had. No guarantees it's what you have but it's very common.

In my case, I sleep on my bridge arm, always, every night. After a while it caused pain. The fix was to sleep on it less (when I'm conscious and remember to) and to use either hot or cold to relieve it. Different people respond to different things, some swear cold helps and some swear only hot works. I mostly just avoid taxing it or lying on it and occasionally stretch it.

I have worked with people who had many types of pain due to sports related activities or injuries. The ONLY prudent thing to do is have another doctor look at it. To self medicate something your not sure of will relieve pain but not the issue. See another doctor .

Get a different bed? Many of my body aches/pains have subsided or gone away since I got a Sleep Number bed. Seriously.

It sounds like a pinched nerve somewhere in the neck/upper spine. Maybe a chiropracter? Sports medicine trainer? Physical therapist?

Well I didn't gain any height, but I can tell when the discs realign.

I do about 2 minutes each time and about 5 times per week.

They suggest no more than 2 minutes each time and no more than 3 times per day.

I have one and use it regularly. It's called Teter Hang-up. It is useful and think it could help just about anyone. There are some at higher risk that would want to look into it before using. High Blood pressure is one factor.
