Are their any pros that are over 60 years old that are considered top tier pros (top 50) on a bar box? Johnnyt

I think Parica would be the only one I can think of. He got 2nd in USBTC 8 ball two years ago and should have won. I think he still plays real strong, hasn't lost that much speed in awhile.

...and Efren's 56, still plays quite sporty. I can imagine him top 50 on a barbox in 5 years. Maybe.

Parica was also my first thought. Efren is close to 60 but still has a couple of years I believe. Nick Varner would also be close and Kim Davenport is getting close to the golden age too. Larry Price might come close to filling the bill. Not too many of us old farts can still compete with the young lads except maybe at one pocket where knowlege and savvy mean more than shooting straight.

Really, it's more a stamina thing, I believe...tournament play can be a grueling marathon of not enough sleep, bad food, etc.

Actually I think it's mostly the ability to maintain pinpoint concentration or focus for long periods of time.

I think you're right. Parica is 64 or 65 yo. Johnnyt

That too. Health status enters into the picture big time as you age. Type 2 diabetes really knocked me for a loop...it also has a toll on concentration, as well as energy, stamina, etc. Good diet, rest, & exercise
all help...but the limits are still there. I'm no great shakes as a player, but 2-3 hours is about my limit these days. After that? Well, it's a "start out horrible and go downhill from there" thing. Oh...I'm 66.

First name that came to mind is Parica (Apr 18, 1949). Buddy Hall (May 29, 1945) and Nick Varner (May 15, 1948) may not be in their prime, but I'm certain they know their way around a bar-box, especially Buddy.

Ismael "Morro" Paez (Sept 9, 1950), Danny Medina (Aug 10, 1951), Wade Crane (Feb 20, 1944) & Bill Stephen (Apr 24, 1951) play pretty sporty on the 7ft'ers.

Dave Matlock (Mar 11, 1954) and Kim Davenport (Nov 15, 1955) are a tad bit young for the 60+ list, but they're pretty strong also, especially Matlock.

I turn 60 in August. Problems include back ache, feet hurting, left leg hurting from toes to hip, overweight, get hot much too easily and the occasional chest pains don't help. Need glasses but can't find any that will properly correct my vision for pool. Maintaining concentration and "give a damn" are both plenty difficult. But I did win two local bar box tournaments yesterday... the first didn't amount to much but the second had several excellent players including the current Missouri State 9-Ball Champ.

Sorry (not really) but I had to put that somewhere. :D

Usually life takes its toll on the old bod pretty heavily by 60 - it certainly has mine. I sympathize with anyone trying to maintain pro status after 60.

Yep, that's the truth. For me, it's my back, legs, lungs and eyes... and no sign of it letting up anytime soon... and I'm only 62. Fortunately (sounds weird) I'm no pro and don't need to make a living from pool. How old is Ronnie Wiseman?

Thank you all. I guess I better stick to matching up with senoirs on the bar box. I guess I should be just happy I can still beat the 9-ball ghost easy, and and the 10-ball ghost under 50% of the time at 69 yo . Johnnyt

I am impressed with all the info you got on players. Have you put them in an excel-file yet, or still just using pen and paper?

I know you have their highest 14-1 runs there too. Please post them! :D

Bob Vanover is still a really great player in his mid 70's. I don't know if he plays bar table at all though.

I have a question do they get to break outside the kitchen from the senior diamonds?

I still like John Henderson's chances at winning 9-Ball or
One Pocket against a lot of the "pros" and he is over 60.

Man,
If we are ever at a tournament together and I'm doing pool commentary, they are going to have to arrest me to keep me from getting you in the commentary booth. If you have to be sedated, well let's just say I will do whatever is necessary.

You are always a great resource of information on our professional players. I just got a great idea for you and I and will be talking to you about this offline.

A few years ago at Derby City Classic, when I beat Parica in a mini-one pocket tournament (racing to 2) he told a friend, (who didn't see the match) "Some old man beat me for the tournament". I think "Amang" thinks thick, black hair is the only indication of youth. :D" Jose still tells the best stories of any of the Filipinos. :)

Best Regards,
Lucky Joe

One of the best from years gone by was Irving Crane who was a threat to beat the youngsters in his 60's.

Thanks Joey! You're always way too kind!

Now, I also have a great idea for YOU! Hows about we (me, Hu, you, maybe we can talk Jay into some of this, & perhaps a few other AZB'ers)
stake you for a trip to the motherland of pocket billiards, yes, the Republic of the Philippines! With your "old man" look (:D) and your young man stroke, well, just use your imagination! If you can fool Amang, just imagine what easy pickings some of them OLDER Filipinos would be!

I never beat Parica in one pocket (we never played so technically, I can say I'm tied with Parica in one pocket :D) but I did get to sit with him in Ohio in between his matches. When he wasn't pouring over a horse racing forum, he waxed eloquent on his opinion of some of the other great Filipino champions. It was a great time listening to him share stories about Andam, Luat and even "Bata"!

Parica has to be one of everyone's favorite players to watch. He's just great at everything. I know that Jay is really high on his gambling game and how he would match up (favorably) with some other elite players in money games.

Lastly Joey, I've long suspected that "Amang" uses "Just For Men"......
