Meucci refinishing issues?

Just wondering if anyone else on here has experienced any issues having their Meucci refinished AT the Meucci plant?

I recently sent in a Meucci Original which had some dings on the shaft and a bent pin. I also wanted to get a different color wrap while it was there and have a black dot shaft made.

Well, today my cue came back. It looks like the shaft was simply sanded down and there are still two large crease dents under the lacquer near the bottom that were overlooked.

They never replaced the wrap and the original which it was sent with is still on it.

The pin was fixed, however, they didnt bother to match up the inlays with the shaft so now when it is screwed together they arent even close to matching whereas they were with the bent pin.

Not a big deal, but my cue had the original weight sticker on the butt and a serial number sticker inside. When it came back I had a different rubber butt which is completely different and looks as if the edges werent cut properly. All stickers are gone.

Last, but not least they did not even send me the black dot shaft!

This included an invoice with all the correct info to be worked on and done and was billed for all of it.

Last year, my father sent his original in as well and ran into a few problems as well where it took a few months to get it back, they forgot to ship it, etc.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this with them? I know the quality of the newer cues is down quite a bit, but I love the older originals that were made in the Bob era. I cannot believe I ran into the above problems sending back a cue to be refinished - I'm at a loss of words.

Unfortunately this is a very common business practice at the Meucci factory for sometime now. A lot of dealers have stopped carrying Meucci cues because of some of the same reasons you just rattled off and then some...and these are new cues. If you needed warranty work performed...good luck getting your cue back within a year.

My advice, in the future if you need any work done on your Meucci cue send it to Scott Sherbine of Proficient Billiards http://www.proficientbilliards.com/ he can do a lot better job in less time than the Meucci factory.

They weren't always like this...it just gotten worse over the years.

Good Luck...

I've already heard about Proficient and the ONLY reason I didn't send it to them was because I wanted another shaft made with a matching collar joint.

Do you happen to know if Scott is capable of matching the collars on a new shaft? If so, then I don't think I will ever send another stick to Meucci - sad - because I really do like the old originals from the 80's.

Scot can't easily match most Meucci collars. What he does is cut off the old collar and reuse it to make a new shaft.

I ordered about a dozen Meucci shafts from the factory 6 or 7 years ago to get matching collars. Within a few months in my air conditioned house, they all warped. I sold the cues for what I could get and was done with them.

May I suggest using Ryan at Muellers.

He goes by Ratcues here on AZB.

Had a Meucci Hubbart redone by him and it turned out great.

Made me a new shaft with matching ringwork also. Lined up the dashes better than the cue's original rings.

Regards,

Scott

The matching collars would be the key thing... I wonder if Meucci would be opposed to selling just a collar or two for certain cues so someone else could make a matching shaft? ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys... I still haven't totally scratched the idea of buying more of the originals, but I definitely wont be sending them to the plant for refinishing anymore.

Ryan (Rat Cues) may be able to get the parts from them. Without them, some rings would be easy to make, some quite difficult.

If you're going to sell the cues, I still think you're better off ordering the shafts from Meucci if you can get a good price (like $110 or so for the "old style' shafts). When people buy a Meucci, the shafts play a certain way - so they expect that soft feel they have. They have their own taper, ferrule, etc.

Some of the cue refinishes were a nightmare. Meucci used a lot of plastic, and it was unstable and some of it yellowed dramatically with age. The plastics preclude the use of chemical strippers. Also, they used some graphics on their fancy cues - so you want someone with experience like Ryan or Scot doing these so they don't sand right through your cue's Greco-Roman "columns". :)

I ordered shafts from Meucci but had Scot do the refinish work.

By the way, I have a stockpile of old shafts I've collected - if you need anything specific for the collars or the shafts it doesn't hurt to e-mail me.

I recently had a guy with a Palmer who wanted to buy an original shaft - since they used about a dozen different joints, I asked him to send me the cue. I found a perfect match from my extras and sent it back to him - it worked out well for both of us.

Stillllll waitinggggggg since sending back the second time...

I can match the collars on just about any Meucci cue. I'm the only one outside of the factory authorized to do repair work.

Your story is, unfortunately, not the first one I've heard. Since my contact info is on their site, I gets email after email of situations just like yours. I wish there was something I could do.

Uhhh ... if they cant get it right the first time what makes you think they will the second time?

Rat Cues can and will fix you up and put a smile back on you face.
The factory is NOT always the place to send a cue for repair work.
Ryan has built a very good reputation over the years and does excellent work.

I completely agree. This is the first time I have sent a cue to them and this was the result. The only reason I sent it back to them a second time was... well... they charged me for all the work! Trust me - I will not be sending them another cue.

Ryan,

Is there any chance you could post up some before and after pictures on some of the work you have done? Or perhaps you have a website with this done? Either way, I plan on sending you the 84-8 I pm'ed you about, but I do not want to do so till I have this other cue back from the actual Meucci factory... the more stories I hear this may be months :frown:

The best person anywhere to send this cue is Ryan from Ratcues here on the forum. He is authorized by Meucci cues to do warranty and repairs for any and all of their cues old and new. Ryan has everything on hand ( Original Meucci parts in most cases) to fully restore any Meucci cue to better than original condition.

Next time contact Ratcues here on the forum for any Meucci repairs including shafts.

Meucci refinish

I'm very surprised no one has mentioned Mike Erwin. I recently had my Meucci Crown Jewel sent to him to make me a new shaft at the same time I sent one of my original black dot shafts to Meucci for warranty work due to the shaft delaminating in several places.
Mike was the shop foreman at Meucci for 17 or 18 years in the "old days". He makes his own cues now, just him & his son, and does outstanding refinish work. He is a pleasure to deal with and delivers more than he promises at a very reasonable rate. Whether or not he is authorized by Meucci for repair work, I don't know nor do I care, he is certainly qualified to do anything that the factory can do. He only charged me $5 to have a matching collar for my new shaft, and he cleaned up the butt and resprayed it, so the issues of feeling rings and inlays that most people complain about, were no longer noticeable and did it all as a courtesy!!! He is a true gentleman and master craftsman. I highly recommend him for any repair work or to build you a new shaft. I'm sure I will order a custom cue from him soon, then I can also recommend his cue as well. Here is his website; http://www.erwincues.com
He also had the shaft back to me within 2 weeks. It took Meucci 6 weeks, I did have to call them at least weekly, but in their defense they are very busy and I was very happy with the quality of the shaft they replaced under warranty at no cost (Except insured shipping to the factory).
Just my 2 cents...

Return To "The Man" Mike Erwin

Mike Erwin is the one who probably made your " Meucci Originals " anyway and all the Meucci's I have work on is done by Mike Erwin. Excellent Service, Excellent Work and he does treat you fair on the price. He's a Master Cue Maker and knows his stuff !!! If your wanting wraps and finish over the wraps redone, Mr. Erwin is the Godfather of the seal coat !!, I sent him a " Castle Wall " that was faded and had nicks, gouges, dents, almost everything you can imagine. I sent an extra shaft down to have as a back up cue for the castle wall as it needed a new tip. Mr. Erwin actually redone part of the wall that was faded in the bottom of the cue !!, Amazing, and to top it off, put a collar on the spare shaft that matched the original. This Man is simply PROfessional. I don't care what brand of cue you have, send it to Mr. Erwin. By the way, I was so impressed, I now shoot with a Erwin Cue !!!, I want to be treated by a cue maker like Mike Erwin and his son Scott who is now really coming out with some things also. Go Erwin

I was also told Erwin was the man to see when needing refinishing work, however, this was after I sent my cue in of course.

For anyone interested I STILL DO NOT HAVE MY CUE from Meucci... they keep giving me the runaround in emails on how Darren is getting to it next week and it will be sent out and then another month goes by... this is by far ridiculous...

Butt cap bottom edge

Is the bottom edge of the butt cap on an older block letter Meucci supposed to have a radius on the edge? or be a right angle?

the meucci runaround

I will add myself to the list of people who got endlessly jerked around by meucci customer service.

they held me up for many, many, months, kept making and breaking promises, then finally returned the cue with a horrendous repair job.

To wait all thet time and to then get such a poor quality repair was infuriating.

Their new cues are terrible, their customer service, even worse.

Best,
Brian kc
