The king of ten ball

Shane Van Boening really showed me something this past weekend at the Seminole Ten Ball Pro Tour stop in Marietta, Georgia.

I was able to watch many matches throughout the weekend due to my quick elimination from the tournament. (I went two and out).

I sat in on a couple of matches to provide some commentary for the BIG TRUCK show. It was quite a weekend, playing, albeit, not playing well enough to win any matches but still lots of fun.

As I watched Shane's some of Shane's matches I started getting really interested in what he was doing. I have seen players dominate other players in matches on occasion but no one dominates all of the time, not like this.

I volunteered and asked to do the commentary for the finals match and was granted that privilege. I probably didn't do as good a job as I can do because I was kind of in awe at what I was seeing but Johnny DiToro who has a remarkable understanding of the game helped make the commentary for the finals match, one of my most enjoyable matches.

Most of you know some of the scores on his matches and the 9-1, 9-2, 9-3's, 9-5 and 11-3 and of course Shane's winning of the tournament, only tell part of the tale. I saw many things in Shane this weekend and they were all positive things. Things like humility, skill extraordinaire, the ability to enjoy himself playing the sport that makes him look like THE KING of TEN BALL. Shane has always been a composed player not letting much affect his demeanor but this weekend, he kicked his composure up multiple notches. Shane was relaxed and HE KNEW that no other player would best him on this weekend.

Shane had a KNOWING look in his demeanor the entire weekend and even when he would miss an occasional shot (that didn't happen often), he sat down almost in resignation and silent disgust that he didn't end the match sooner than later. Ten Ball is a very difficult game and there were plenty of new rules this weekend to make it even more difficult but Shane looks like he has MASTERED Ten Ball.

It appears that Shane PREPARED to win and nothing could stop The South Dakota Kid from dominating this tournament. Hopefully, AZB Radio or the magazines will be doing some interviews with him to determine what he did to prepare for this event.

If Shane stays at this level and the rest of the players don't find a way to MASTER the break of Ten Ball, no player will be able to defeat Shane until he decides that the preparation is no longer worth the effort.

Shane's skill at pocketing balls and making incredibly consistent shape was second to none in this tournament but his break this weekend was the most incredible thing I have ever seen.

I love pool competition whether its me trying to compete or someone else being stretched to their physical limits so all I can say is that for any of the other professional players to have a chance at competing with Shane at Ten Ball, THEY are going to have to learn how to master the ten ball break. Until then, there can only be one.

The truth is that there are great players all over the world but America is still capable of producing some of the GREATEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD.

Shane is an inspiration to today's players and will be so for future generations of pool players. A well defined legacy is in the making.

Congratulations Shane!

P.S. It was a great weekend to be a fan and you should have been there. Don't miss another opportunity to witness greatness in the making.

Joey,
Just curious if Lee Van Corteza was in the tournament? IMHO he's in the running for the crown.

I am a huge Johnny fan to start off. But, Shane was at a different level than the other players. Said it the whole time I watched. It's amazing how when someone missed on the one or two, no matter the layout, they knew it was over. And the break? Two, three, and four balls while squatting whitey.

I can't see anyone beating that kid from the US right now. It was something to watch. And he did this to ggogooood players, too. The Donnie match was amazing. Donnie did miss a couple of balls that put Shane in gear, but wow. Anyway, I see why nobody is chasin' this kid down for action. If he gets any more "head consistent", he'll be scarier than he already is.

Shane's break

Joey,

Something I noticed from the stream, on his break and on many other shots, not all, Shane is practice stroking Bustamonte style with the tip extremely low left. No idea what if anything that has to do with the price of tea in China but I found it curious.

I have to admit that anything Shane does is very interesting at the level he is playing. His physical game is always super impressive. If he is playing with total confidence too it is going to be a rough Summer for his competition!

Thanks Joey for sharing your impressions of Shane and your excellent commentary of matches.

Two observations, both known, one obvious:

That 10-ball break, WOW! I watched him do pretty much the same job breaking at SBE in March. It was uncanny how many times the 1-ball came straight back into the top left corner. And whitey, maybe close to 90% of the time ended up at or near mid table.

The l-o-n-g bridge. I watched Shane bridge for a shot that was maybe a foot off a side cushion-face and where was his bridge hand, you ask? Hanging, almost dangling off the outside top-edge of the rail. Most mortals would have bridged that shot from the bed, the minority from the top of the cushion edge, only Shane from that outside rail perch. And most of his regular shots look to be 8-10" from the edge of hs bridge hand to the cue ball. It works brilliantly for him.

I, and I believe most others would have to say, Shane is the monster breaker in 10 ball. Busty, me thinks is #2.

What a treat it is to watch this guy completely dominate play.

Best,
Brian kc

Excellent points about Shane's bridge and his break is second to none.
Thanks for the very nice comments about my commentary Brian!

Outstanding 10 Ball

Great post Joey, Shane is incredible.

I watched the stream Sat and Sun.

Of interest to me was John Smith. Very exaggerated process of lining up shots for 3 balls ahead position. It was a clinic to watch his process.

If there are files, I would recommend watching a few matches by John for the pointers.

Not saying that he is in Shanes league, but just Johns meticulous process.

The other interesting aspect of the rules used was, it was called shot. And a missed shot could be passed back to the shooter. A safe had to be called and it could not be shot into a pocket.

The overall safety play was at a very high level.

The whole streamed event would be worth reviewing. Outstanding.

Joey, hope you picked up pointers in your games and during your commentary sessions.

SVB 10-ball break

FWIW, SVB used to break several hundred times a day using the BreakRak.

Obviously, it helped a LOT.

Thea BreakRak is a great tool for improving your break.

What he does better than anybody else IMO is controlling the break. I kept track during one of his matches and all but one time he broke the one ball went toward the corner pocket at the head of the table while the cue ball stayed somewhere above the rack.

Most guys are hoping to have a shot after the break, he expects to have a shot and when he doesn't he looks upset.

Maybe not but Shane is the only one who goes head to head with them when he goes there. Well Daz does too but I think Shane is in action more than Daz.

You're talking one guy up against a line up of proven champions. Not even any of the guys you mention has to like it playing all the other guys.

The only way Shane is going to get there is he has to climb over them and every time he goes to the Philippines he tries again.

i said svb plays great.
and i love that he will play those guys.
you think if i played like svb i wouldnt play them?
now back to this thread it says KING OF TEN BALL he is not.
KING OF TEN BALL USA PLAYERS HE IS.

If he can just figure out how to beat those darn little filipino guys! :)

Not like he hasn't won his share.

Last I checked he was willing to play a race to 100 ten ball with anyone for $10,000. No one is barred. Pinoys included.

Go get Dennis or Busty and lets have a party in L.A.
