Mika needs a new nickname...

I was tossing and turning last night trying to figure out how Mika got the nickname "Iceman". History tells us that most people with this name, "Iceman", acquired it because of their ability to maintain composed while at the table, or doing whatever it is they are doing. Larry Hubbart is a prime example of this and rightfully so earned the nickname "Iceman". Reportedly, these people were called this nickname because an observer would have no idea if they were winning or losing by simply observing the person.

No offense to anyone and this is not to bash Mika, but the nickname "Iceman" is simply no fitting for him. It is obvious to tell if he is winning or losing by his demeanor at the table. It is surprising that he has been so successful in tournament pool the way I saw him beat himself up over the last couple of days playing SVB.

So, can anybody think of any new nicknames for Mika?

This is the real "Iceman"....

Well, he's Finnish, and they tend to have a bit of snow around. He also has that stare that goes straight through you. That's how he got the nickname.

Yes, but traditionally this nick refers to people who show no emotion...

He does well under pressure. Just like the 'Ice Man' in Top Gun. Ice flows through his veins. His winning attitude is the key to this nickname, which I think is well suited.

Let's see...He's from Finland, making him a Fin...Fish have fins...How about "Fish" or "Minnow"?

I think Shane just beat his nickname out of him, and therefore Shane should now be called the Iceman.... The Kid he's grew out of .... and if Iceman means you can't tell if they're winning or losing at the table... I defy anyone to tell me when he's behind or ahead at any point in the match by looking at him.... and for that matter, I defy anyone to tell me when he comes to the table and is running a rack, if he is behind or ahead. Cool, Calm, Collected and smoooooooooooooth.

he was neve down to mika.

Since he acted like a little kid at times and it was a song: Ice, Ice, Baby. But I like flipper too. I haven't seen arm waiving like that since Bob Ameen, the great regional 3-C player from the Detroit area. Anyone that knew him will know what I mean.

Mika is a great player that was taken out of his game because of his lack luster 10-ball break. Even with the breaks that everyone said Shane got (Mika got plenty, too), if Mika broke the balls with similar results of Shane's I think he would have won. But boy did Mika look like a bad sport through the whole contest. I hated him taking breaks while Shane was still at the table, even if he was racking...it was still his turn. And all the other little gamesmanship he pulled. I expected more from him - he is a champion (and still is).

After this TAR performance, I'd say Mika "Guppy" Immonen.

Dude, he is a champion. It's ridiculous because he lost to arguablely the best 10 ball player on the planet that he is a guppy. Does he get upset yes, does he wear his emotions on his sleeve yes. Should he act differently at the table I would say yes.

However, there arent many guppies who at some point are going to be inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame my friend.

I won money betting against Mika in this event, but to say that he needs a new nickname or some of the general comments against his play in various threads are pretty absurd imho.

The guy is the number one ranked player in the world - did he give that type of perfomance in this match? Eh, I'd have to say no. Did he lose his composure at times? Yes.

He had a bad few days at the office playing arguably the best 10 ball player in the world in Shane. Doesn't change the fact that he crushes 99.9% of the players out there, including nearly everyone that posts on this website.

Let's give the guy some respect - he played for the cash and lost, lost his composure sometimes - but we've all been there - it just hasn't been streamed for a worldwide audience when it happens.
