I have been pondering some of the things that can allow lesser quality players to be very competitive with players who are much more superior. And more to the point, what, if anything can be done to counter it.

Aside from weight, what equalizers are you aware of and please chime in on possible solutions.

Here's one to start with:

Poor quality tables. If you can't accurately predict rolls and cushion response, you pretty much have to abandon your finesse game. This favors the lesser player who never really had a strong finesse game to begin with.

What do you all think are some of the big equalizers? And if you have a suggestion as to how to neutralize them, by all means, share that, too.

What the %#@^ just happened?

For me,it's magnetic cue balls.
I like to spin and these balls are unreliable...sometimes they push..
...sometimes they masse...I end up playing position like players
I give the 7/8 to.
Diamond tables are now changing all that..I used to avoid barboxes...
..but no more
Loose cloth and separated slates are two more equalizers,they make
playing pool akin to rolling dice.

Inconsistent rails and table rolls are an ADVANTAGE to a hardened
road player.He who recognizes them first gets the cash.
 
Big pockets (or standard size pockets) benefit lesser skilled players. At least that what Brunswick did after the war, was widen the side pockets to entice more people to play.

Chalk is a biggie. You hide all the chalk and palm one piece. When the guy is not looking, chalk up. Believe it or not, I've played in several places, a hotel and a nightclub, where they couldn't find any chalk. It's a game changer.

Tips too make a large difference. Once you realize you're outclassed, cut off his cuetip when he goes to the bathroom and toss it on the table to make it look like it popped off. That will neutralize him.

Equalizers

Goodness gracious. If your the better player you already have more shots in your arsenal. You should be stronger mentally, but most important your defensive game should be way stronger than the lesser player. Even the greatest run out players have a strong defence to fall back on. Get going on the defensive side more quickly. Are you letting him get to his D quicker than you? The secret to great defense is to start first. I hook you and you have to react with a good hit just to stay alive. Don't get on the wrong side of D and be the one reacting.

Volatile, hostile, or potentially violent opponents can really lower a better player's game and even make him want to lose just so he can get out out of the place in one piece.

Bar boxes with big pockets. I watch in amazement every night, bangers run 5-6 balls, and sometimes full racks without playing any shape at all. Simply slow rolling everything in, and as long as OB is visible, for a straight shooter/roller,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's pocketable.
