Lori Shampo

I was friends with Lori and we traveled together at times playing pool and played at Sands in Grand Rapids at times. If you beat her and taught her shots, I can say with a certainty that she was acting like she didn't know and lost to try to up the bet.
Lori played better than the average to good male player by far. She knew things that most players couldn't do or attempt. Lori was good at all games on all tables and playing with a big cue ball was her specialty outside of winning at gambling with men!
Lori quit playing for a long time and when she had just started again, her and I started hanging out and playing together and getting games from guys around the city and state.
We both qualified for a WPBA tournament in Chicago, her first competition and first time really playing in at least 5 years. She had a small baby at home and didn't go out like she once did.
It was amazing to watch her roll over all of the women she played at her first pro event. She didn't even play often and still took 3rd with ease.
She not only was one of the greatest, she still is and I find it hard pressed for anyone to get to the level to knock her off that thrown.
Neil, I knew her tactics............she probably wanted more of a bet. That's how we usually ran it. It certainly wasn't because she didn't know a shot.......she knew them all and then some!
She had so much talent and was a great person to get to know but she went down a very dark path. Her talent is indisputable!

Thats a fact Rita! That girl could flat play and had a lot of hustle and gamble to her.One of the few women I ever saw Al willing to steer around and bet whatever she wanted with his money.Eva didnt want anything to do with her in the 80s over at pockets in Lansing. She was far from a shortstop, she was a real pro.

Jay, was that at the Maverick Club in Richmond, KY in about 1982 or 83?
I was there and seen Lori, and people said Jean was there. Jean got into something with Lori and took off. I was looking forward to seeing them two fight it out on the pool table, but never happened.

Lori could break 9-ball almost as hard as Shannon Daulton and played like a man. I have never seen another woman that could do that. I have only seen her on TV, but Jasmin Ouschan game reminds me of Lori.

Can you imagine...............

With how good she was and what she knew and could do that she would ever ask an average player how to shoot a shot?
Lori was cool and we had fun. She deserved a lot more than she got out of life but, she stayed in a life I ran away from. I wish I had stuck it out a little longer, maybe I couldve kept her from going too far again.
Lori had a ton of people that wanted to be around her but mostly so they could win money off of her. Her little boy was adorable and she lit up when she was with him.

I loved playing with Lori, I always learned something and we had some fun.

If she wanted to make an effort, she was the best very easily and by far. Unless you knew her game and watched her play seriously, its hard to believe but if she was alive, she would be at the top even today in my opinion.

Especialy if she stuck around GR and learned those shots she was being shown! LOL . I do know she wouldnt show any speed for 10 or 20 a set which is about all the action she couldve got at the sands most nites.

You're right, it was at the Maverick Club. I was riding herd on Keith back then.
He finished second that year or it was the next year! Keith and Lori were good buddies. Neither one would back down from any game. Lori is the only woman I know of who would play $500-1,000 9-Ball! I doubt she would be trying too hard for ten or twenty bucks. She would be in her stall speed.

Lori 's kid

Would like some info...be nice to know his circumstances.
Personally, I'd like to do something...don't know how old or where he's
living.
I remember Lori around the Rack...she had courage and talent.
Last time I saw her was at Harley's place in Jacksonville in '85.
Felt real bad when I heard her circumstances.

Loris boy

Its been so long I'm not even sure if I remember his name right but I recall Christopher. Last time I saw him he was about 2 years old so would be around 18 now I would guess. I have no idea where he ended up because I left pool for a long time and that meant not keeping in touch with Lori. I hope he was well cared for. If anyone knows or finds out, please post. I'm certain the church group that helped Lori may know.

Yes Kevin, I saw Palmer Byrd several times, mostly when I'd go to the Cushion and Cue in Oak Park--which was only on occasion. I recall her as rather nice looking and a straight pool player. I was an East Side Detroit guy. Mostly went to Kelly's Kue and Playland 1969-1972 and 1977-1981. Played on a bar league in Hamtramck for a few years out of Gene's Bar. I went to MSU! Those were the Duffy Daugherty/ Bo Schmbeckler days.

It sounds like you and I, like 12 Squared and I, were in the same room at the same time on a few occasions and never knew each other 40 years ago. I lived in Ann Arbor (college boy) and came to Detroit all the time. I remember Madeline of course, and Baby Face. Do you remember Palmer Byrd?

Thanks

Kevin

I really do think there is a good book and posible movie of her life. Johnnyt

I dont mean no disrespect to MS.SHAMPO,I ALWAYS LIKE HER,and thought she was a beautiful women,i just dont think it would look good for pool with all the drugs involved, and her omitting prosituting, and things of that nature, but for you and i it would be a great movie to watch or book to read, but for young people that has some interest in pool it mite make them and their familys turn against pool, but you cant really hide the truth either from people,so i guees its a touchey situation.but if they ever do write a book about MS.SHAMPO or a movie i will be the first in line!

I don't think it would hurt pool at all. Drugs don't discriminate. For every pool player that you can show me with a drug problem, I can show you 10 regular citizens that have pissed away their lives. Not trying to stir anything, just feel that her being a player is what makes her story unique from all the others whose lives have been torn by drugs. From the stories I've heard, I think her life story would be a great read or movie. JMO

Tragic loss for the pool world it would seem with the her spiral downward into drugs Ms Shampoo sounds like an absolute talent wish I could have seen her play. A tragic loss for her child and family I am sure Christopher feels the biggest loss. You have my sympathy.

A book of Lori's life would be a great human interest story, although with a sad ending. Not a tool with which to promote pool.
I am certain that none of us wants to stand in judgement of someone who led such a tragic life. May she rest in peace. S.P.

i met lori ,running with paulie campball another talented soul in st. louis in the early 80's.verypretty,and a lethal break

I knew Paulie mostly from Starchers back in the 80's. I met Lori once in Chattanooga in about 94 or 95. She tried hustling me but when she realized I'd been around the block she kind of opened up and we talked for an hour or so, telling war stories. She sure had her share. I invited her to come to Cincinnati where I had a poolroom and told her I'd stake her some. She said she'd probably pass through there but she wasn't interested in putting down any roots. She never made it to Cincinnati, that I heard of. Any of you know much about Geraldine Titcomb. She once owned a poolroom in Cincinnati, but that was while I was living in Florida, in the 70's. A lot of the locals talk highly of her game. I understand she played second fiddle to Dorothy Wise and later Jean Balukas, never quite making the top echelon of woman players, but wasn't far behind. I know Buddy Hall has a daughter with one of her daughters. I also heard that Frank Titcomb, her husband and quite a bit older, passed away in Florida and Gerry "switched sides" and took up with another woman.

Gerry Titcomb was good and she would gamble. But not even in Lori's league! Lori was at least the seven ball over her. I'm pretty sure they played somewhere along the line, but I can't remember when. I was too busy trying to get action for my horses (and me)!

Does anyone have any videos of her playing?

It sucks not being able to see her play.
