Wanted to do a case with some 'natural' leather combined with something very 'unnatural'.
I'll add in some darker colors inside the 'cutouts' and try to keep it evil and leave the outside perimeter looking normal. Still have a lot of guts and gadgets to add in but I like it so far.

Anyway, just thought I'd share some pics for now.

It sure is going to look cool when you get it done, I can't wait to see it wrapped around the interior.

Very nice Rex, you've definitely come into your own with this artistic ability.

Actually, a lot of people ask how the stamping/tooling is done.
This is really a big can of worms to open because leather crafting has been around for so long and there are so many ways to tool, carve, lace, braiding, plaiting, burning, etc... it. I'm sure I could write an essay on just tooling leather because I love doing it so much.

But basically basically.... yes, this type of tooling is done free hand. A design is drawn up, traced on to the leather, cut in with a very pointy knife, then 'embossed' using various combinations of odd shapes and sized tools. The business end of the tools themselves are quite small so you can get pretty detailed with them. Because of this, it also requires a lot of time to cover a large area. Some 'bevelers' are only 1/8" wide. Compare that to a Rusty Melton case and think of how many HOURS AND HOURS of work it takes him to tool an entire case! It's definitely a love bordering on obsession. It's also one of the most relaxing and rewarding crafts one can be involved with.

Anyway, here are some basic tools...

Awesome case as always. Your creativity brings a fresh aspect to traditional casemaking.

Thanks for sharing,
