Earl - Mars comment question/comment

On one thread or another from today or last night someone said for Earl to walk a day in Shane's shoes. Well that as it maybe a very difficult day I would also challenge someone to walk a day in Earl's shoes and play at top level with people doing what they do to him. YES he has brought a lot of it on himself but not all of it.

If your trying to tell me that people go there just to put Earl on tilt, you have no clue.He starts his lunacy behavior, then people wait for himself to implode.
Your making it sound likes its all the crowds fault for his behavior.LMAO.
But,if its the crowds fault then he has earned it from the lack of respect to them.

If you think that people do not intentionally "push Earls buttons" you're blind! Gee I'm sorry if I offended any blind people, but that's the way it is.

yes
but he pushes the buttons of people in the crowd.
i never see or hear the crowd go off on any other players.
why?

This is gambling & real pool as I grew up seeing it. This is exactly the kind of stuff that has been pushed under the rug for years now & pool has suffered because of it. Fats made a living & became a house hold celebrity taking on a persona that was meant to hustle. Earl has a different persona but the same purpose. Not that long ago pool was full of brilliant characters. You had fats that talked crap non-stop, Wimpy who gagged & buckled over in pain all time with stomach issues but never missed, Bucktooth who could gamble an Eskimo out of ice, Mosconi who was proper & above it all. And pool was HUGE. Everybody loved the differing characters & drama of the pool room. Then somebody got the brilliant idea to make pool sportsmanlike & gentlemanly, and pool faded away from main stream.

Heck, even the movies that have spiked pool into mainstream were about hustling & vibrant characters. When Sports Illustrated or Maxim does articles on great female players, it's not written how professional & well mannered they are. It's about how hot they are & how they can hustle folks of their money.

Pool is not baseball or football. It's a game set inside of one guy losing money to another guy, and all of the game behind doing it. Pocketing balls is only part of the equation. Drop the drone crap & let players be players, backers be backers, hustlers be hustlers, railbirds be railbirds. We love it. We love seeing it. We love talking about it when it's over. Look at all these threads & how much attention this match has grabbed just after one night. Deep down, we love it. It's exciting & provocative. It excites emotion. This is the pool game the world loves. Say what you will but everybody who chimed in to any of these threads (a lot of people) let this game grab their attention to the point that they took time out of their day to entertain it. This is how you take pool mainstream. Just sit back & let it be itself. This match reminds me of mouthy Fats vs. gentleman Mosconi. Every time those guys played, the world watched. And everybody had their favorite.

Im a big fan of SVB, Earls behavior and what he said was outrageous. But was expected and part of the excitement and expectation for the match..i don't remember a pool event with this much hype. Shane thought it was funny earlier in the match then seem worn down by the table and Earls play...I don't understand Mars inserting himself in day one, while holding a beer it just doesn't look right. Everyone must think that over the 3 days Shane would problemly come out on top... I $$ Earl wouldn't be able to finish the match... But my point is everyone knows Earl and what to expect. If SVB was ahead everyone would sill be smiling... this hurts Shane, he now can loose this match, before last night it could never have happen...

Ben

The bottom line is 99.9% of the Az'ers have their money on Shane to win giving Earl 20 games plus on the wire and it's not going the way they were expecting. Earl always acts the way he acts so why should this match be any different. Back in the day Earl had alot of fans screaming in the stands for him and now everyone routes against him and try to make his wheels come off. He's definately has mental issues, but everyone knows that going in. As far as the play yesterday away from any antics, Earl outplayed Shane in every area, breaking, shotmaking and safety play. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens today. I noticed the last hour Earl was doing less chirping and Shane won like 2 out of 12 games. Excellent pool yesterday, I can't wait to watch these 2 great players go at it again today...

i'll get called an a-hole for this, but what's new. there was nothing wrong with what he said about wishing he was deaf and couldn't hear the crowd. he didn't make fun of shane's disability. he didn't make of shane period. he may have treadted a serious affliction lightly, but who amoung you hasn't? i'm willing to bet none of you. ever call someone a retard? bet you did. i've said i wish i was blind so i had never seen (insert so many disgusting things i've seen). we're not picking on people who have that affliction. it treats a serious thing lightly but it's not an insult to anyone who specifically has that affliction.
as for john threatening earl i feel that had more to do with the overall tone earl was setting. in the beggining earl was getting on people pretty hard. i think the deaf comment was just the straw that broke john. i am thinking john mars is smarter than to threaten somone publicly - he repeated it here where there is a public record - and then cause physical damage to another person. and saying it wouldn't end well could have meant a multitude of things. just one for instance would be john could stack that place to the rafters with people talking smack to earl to send him over the deep end. there are so many people there rooting against earl to begin with how much would it take to get a few of them really going after him verbally? i'm thinking a few well greased palms and john could have earl on full tilt.
lastly, i think it's dispicable that a-holes show up just to heckle the guy and set him off. i'd love to see what would happen if somone sat on the rail and busted balls in other money matches. the guy sets himself off. there really is no need for douches to pack the stands and break this guy's balls. it's school yard nonsense. anybody got the balls to do it to alex p.? efren? corey or john schmidt? doubt it. but i'll bet if you did you'd see some uncharacteristic behavior from those guys.

+1

This kinda is Fats/Mosconi for the current generation...

I don't think physical violence is part of this threat.John is an honorable very active backer. If Earl wins or loses he has to stay in action.John has the ability to influence what that action may be and influence others to follow suit.

Earl needs to watch his P's and Q's.

So here is the FYI for this !

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts...
So in old England , when customers got unruly,
the bartender would yell at them
'Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down..'

It's where we get the phrase 'mind your P's and Q's'

if 99.9 % are betting on shane
then how is anyone betting on earl?
dont make since.
someone has to bet on earl for someone to get a bet on shane.

Chris, they didn't have to take this game just like you won't play a certain player again even if you think you are the favorite. You didn't come on here and b*tch about the man, you just told them you wouldn't play again.

With certain players you have to know what you're in for and you can either accept it and play, or not play. Don't complain that an ogre acted like an ogre after you're losing.

John Mars did the right thing !

With the money they playing for & the move Earl was pulling i give props to john for handling it however he saw fit...Shane is a super nice guy & non confrontation so John might have seen that Shane was uncomfortable with the situation & it might be affecting his game..I've staked players that would handle that kind of thing themselves plus guys like shane that are just too easy going & I have had similar situations that had to be addressed while staking matches...If Earl gets up there & just outplays Shane & wins the money..kudos & props to him but to act a @ss & try a classless move to gain a advantage is just wrong & should be dealt with by whatever means necessary to even out playing field.

But at this point even if Earl changed and tried to simply play pool the precedent has been set and people know that the buttons on Earl exist and they work so they will do their best to push them. If Ralph Souquet, Johnny Archer, Mika Immonen, or most other pros put on an Earl Strickland suit and then tried to play a match they would be pretty shocked at the blatent stuff the audience would be doing to them, they would likely get pissed off about it, they might say something, and thus now the reaction the crowd was looking for took place and they ramp up the stuff 10-fold. Even a guy like Ralph Souquet if he traded places with Earl would be screwed, as respectful and professional a guy as he is there is no way he could ever get the crowd to treat him with respect if they thought he was Earl.

Earl is pretty much screwed at this point, the crowd will always have its share of goofs in it that are not there to watch a pool match but instead want to needle Earl and try to get a rise out of him. It does not matter if Earl shows up that day feeling great and acts totally professionally at the beginning, that is not what those "fans" are there to see and they will do wahtever it takes to get the show they came to watch.

Yea. Gilbert Gottlie or whatever the weirdos name is , is making jokes about what happened in Japan-he is rich and famous. Poor guy is not going to be the aflac quack quack duck phuckk or something something. This is petty as hell. Let the boys play some pool and have some fun. No two pool players have earned it more. The players can say anything they want to. THe rail is supposed to be quiet. Dont you remember where Grady played upstairs, you better not even say good shot or your ass was out of there.......

youre right

I dont know shane other than meeting him a couple times out in vegas. he doesnt seem like the type to say, "hey earl, thats some fckd up shit you said about me..." so I give props for John standing up for not only his horse, but his friend. I am that type of guy that would step in and correct someone for being wrong.

Alot of people have said that john couldve chosen better words, well I say fck that. Earl chose to say what he said and got it thrown back to him. If Earl is gonna throw rocks he better be willing to dodge when they get thrown back.

and why did it get to this point?
cause the way he treats them simple.
people treat you the way you treat them.
