Earl - Mars comment question/comment

If Earl is bad news then why is Mark Griffin happy as a two peckered puppy to have him? Mark's no idiot. In fact he's widely known as a pool business genius. IMO, Earl is a calculated, experienced, well versed entertainer. He plays like God & can get into character as well as the very best of actors. People are drawn to him for an array of reasons, like no other champion EVER in this game. Mosconi could play like Earl. Fats could talk like Earl. Bucktooth is crazy like Earl. Earl is all of it. If he really is as crazy as folks think, then he's learned how to use it to his and POOL's advantage. He turned a handicap into a virtue. That, in my mind, makes it all even better.

I doubt very much that what happened last night was Earl melting down because of the crowd. What I saw was Earl starting very early with remarks & trash talk to the crowd. He even picked arguments with a few. It spun into a frenzy & climaxed about half way through with him twitching & scratching & talking to himself. He got the crowd fired up, Shane completely distracted, and then went into semi-silent dead stroke for an epic show of raw skill. It was brilliance & it was purposeful, IMO. The dude gets into character & puts on a great show. Who else in the history of pool could do it all while still in dead stroke? Nobody. Only Earl.

Perhaps he meant that 99.9% are betting on Shane and giving a lot of games up as opposed to the .1% who bet on Earl even from day one.

Confused

I need to know did someone hold a gun to Shane and his backers heads to make them play, NO !!!!!!!!!! Everyone that has ever watched pool knows how Earl is, he has been this way for ever if you are *****ing about the way he is acting it is your fault for playing or watching him, He has not changed in 30 years and never will. But you still watch because at his best no one plays the game better.

Fan of Earl and Shane but a bigger fan of the game!!!!!!!

When I talked to Shane and saw that he was visibly upset by how Earl was treating him I decided to say something to Earl. I have never talked to Earl before so I introduced myself and said that I said. I was not threatening violence at all, that was the furthest thing from my mind. He jumped up and said I threatened him and someone should call the police.

When he jumped up for a second I thought he was going to try and hit me, if that would of happened I would of protected myself and that is the only way Earl would ever be injured by me or anyone I know. I have way too much to lose to start a fight with anyone.

I love Shane like a family member and will protect him as such, he is sometimes too nice for his own good and won't say or do things to protect himself.

I kind of feel bad because deep down I know that Earl can't control himself and he is not capable of controlling his actions.

When people say that this is a gambling match and this is the way pool is I believe they don't have a clue. I have been involved and attended many of these matches and there hasn't been a single one with anything like this. In fact I have been involved with straight gambling on pool and poker for many years and have never seen someone act like Earl did last night. I hope he is better today, I know his friends were going to try and talk to him about his behavior.

I watched Earl play several matches at Derby and he was a complete gentleman in each match and the crowd was very supportive of him. I was hoping that this was the Earl that was going to show up for this event.

Anyone who thinks that I said what I did to try and get into Earl's head or because I didn't want to lose money doesn't know me very well. I would of said the same thing if we were up 11 games, it is the principle and not the money.

Very well said

I never doubted your intentions of talking with Earl. You looked to be well controlled & calm. But I disagree about gambling & attitudes. Bucktooth is FAR worse than Earl in terms of acting nutty & has made tons from it. Stuff like this just isn't commonplace nowadays. But heck, it used to be common & even aired on national TV. What happened between you & Earl was unfortunate. What Earl was saying to Shane was below the belt. But during play, Earl wasn't doing anything that didn't used to be common in the game. Miz used to tell stories about a guy he played who would pull out a knife & start stabbing his leg (wooden) & cursing aloud to shark his opponents. Old timers of the game have tons of stories about sharks & vibrant personalities. We just don't see it today. Forrest Whitaker's role in Color of Money was a lot like Earl. It's entertainment & it's raw gambling. Or maybe I just grew up playing in low class ghetto rooms, and think this gentleman stuff is weird & foreign to pool. I really don't know how you haven't noticed the colorful characters in pool if you have gambled that much. And I don't doubt that you have gambled a lot. Just perplexed at the notion that this is something you haven't seen before.

Grady...You've been there in the past. Isn't it true that the kind of behavior going on in the Earl/SVB match was common back in the day? I know I've seen players from your era shark each other mercilessly. IMO it's one of the things that made them tough, and immune to anything.

Apparently i'm not the only one who's seen this side of the game.

so if 1000 people like SVB and bet for him against 1 guy who opens the window because he likes earl, that would be what percentage?

(hint 99.9% of people betting on SVB).

not sure how a gambler like you missed this...maybe because people are used to sportsbooks where they keep the action 50/50 and make money on the vig....doesnt apply in casual gambling.

if 99.9 % are betting on shane
then how is anyone betting on earl?
dont make since.
someone has to bet on earl for someone to get a bet on shane.

A lot of stories have been blown out of proportion, I am sure some of the crazy things did happen though. I met Bucktooth at Derby one year and in a few minutes realized he is someone who I would never deal with. I try and only gamble with people I respect. I have gambled with Scooter, Alex, Dippy, etc... and never had any problems with them at all. Sure we might both get loud when trying to match up and there might be friendly banter during the match but overall everyone acted like adults.

As I stated earlier this isn't a normal gambling match, it is kind of a mix between a tournament and gambling. All of the previous matches I have watched weren't anything like this, if this were my first TAR match it would of been my last.

Honestly if I was Shane I would feel like I was a healthy, good looking, funny champion who can hear and talk just fine and if I play bad I'm going to be upset about it and I wouldn't want anyone sticking up for me like I'm incapable of handling the situation.

Having said that I totally respect John for wanting to enter the lion's den to stick up for his friend.

Perhaps Shane appreciates it but I know I wouldn't want that.

Understood. You have your limitations & reservations. You're a classy guy, Mars. Don't quit this game. Pool needs you.

John, once upon a time Shane looked up to Earl and admired him. I think that's all over now.

I have pretty much read all the Earl hate mail here. As bad as he's suppose to be, there isn't anyone else that I would rather see Shane play on PPV. Someone said earlier they don't like to watch robots playing pool never uttering a peep. I like to see colorful great pool players as well. McCready had it, Earl has it, and it makes great action! Thank you Justin and TAR for this epic match up!!!!

well i know a lot of people who have bet
and its not close to 99.9 per on shane.

I can't believe that you, of all people, would have typed that! A REF???? In a gambling match????? Are you kidding me?????????? Sheesh, I've seen guns pulled when one guy couldn't win any other way!

just like i cant believe u condoning Earls bad behavior...If it was in some back room without the TAR guys streaming it & a big promotion...plus it being EARL...the new earl n e way...I wouldn't have said a ref was needed...He is one of the only players left playing today that I would suggest that...Believe this..If i was staking someone against Earl & he got way out of line...I'd knock him on his ass...I dont care how many world titles he has..That's just the school I'm from...but with all the variables on this match I stand by my opinion that that would be best way to handle Earl.

It's the crowds fault - It's not Earl's fault.
It's okay because he's Earl and everyone knows how he is.
It's a gambling match and anything goes.
Earl is colorful and great for pool.
Earl blah, blah, blah.

To all the above I say BULLSHIT! I'm not giving the guy a pass for behaving the way he is right now. I've seen McEnroe, Hellmuth, Fats and Bucktooth. None of them are anything like Earl, and not nearly as offensive to their opponents or the audience. In this respect Earl is in a class by himself, low class!

If this is the shot in the arm pool needs, I'll find another profession. I will quit this game before I see it turn into WWF or it's equivalent.

P.S. Yes, I know he's sick, but there's a place where you draw the line, sick or not. And Earl has crossed that line imo. More than once.
