About 5 or 6 years ago, I was at the local pool hall playing some 1 pocket with a friend. We were playing $5 a game and having some beers, just a friendly game. We probably played a few hours before my wife showed up.
So, she orders some more beers and we are all just chatting, all the while, I'm still playing 1 pocket with my friend.

About midnight, we decide to call it quits. My friend has a long drive to get back home so he usually doesn't play till 2AM, which is closing in our area. We both take care of our table time and beer tabs.

I head back to the table and start breaking down my cue, when the younger guy that was playing on the table next to us for a couple hours, challenges me to 1 game of 9 ball for $10.

I saw him playing another guy for a while, but toward the end he was playing by himself. He would probably be rated a APA 3 or 4 if I had to label him. I think he beat the other guy out of a few bucks, not sure how much.

Anyhoo, my wife looks at me and gives me "the look" as if to say, we have plenty o time, go ahead and play. I put my cue back together and we flip for the break. I win the toss and he racks em up. I break em and they lay pretty weird. There is one cluster and another ball is in a position where it has to be banked in the side, because of higher balls setting down either rail. Normally I would play safe but, I saw this guys best game and decided to go for everything. .....I nudge the cluster apart and clear off those and bank the ball in the side....then clear off the rest of the rack. This guy pays me and shakes his head. He mumbled something about "got a lucky run, you never ran out like that earlier". I told em "we could play some more" but he didn't have any more money.

Afterward, I got to talking with my wife as we finished our beers. I think that this guy thought, my friend and I were playing 8 ball. He probably thought he was stealing because we couldn't make 2 or 3 balls in a row. LOL, I still get a chuckle out of it, just thinking back.

My wife said "you stole that guys $10". I told her "he would have lost to somebody, may as well be me". Besides, if he knew anything about pool, he would have figured out that I was playing a different game. He thought he was stealing and it backfired.

I'm sure bank pool players must have similar stories. To the novice it would appear that they just miss every shot.

Anyway, I just felt like sharing a moment of time. Sometimes a gift horse falls right into you.

Chris...You did nothing wrong. The other guy challenged you. I might have told him, quite frankly (yet still friendly) that he had no chance to win. If he thought you were playing 8ball, he should have noticed that you rarely if ever played the 8 last (almost never happens in 1 hole). LOL

"Sometimes a gift horse falls right into you"... truer words have never been spoken...lol...people often see me practicing cue all control & position and think I can't make a shot, some of them actually challenge me to money games, sometimes suckers are just begging you to take their money.Anybody that watches and does know the difference between games isn't a hustler, just a wanna-be-robber (in this case).

Nice story Chris. You should have lost that game and then played a set. That would have been a good lesson learned by him.

BTW, I didn't want to come across like I run out every time I'm at the table. I just knew that he couldn't, and I shot at everything. It just worked out well.

Hi there and funny story,

He's just lucky you didn't lay down. Or he's lucky he was broke.

Good story. Fun to read about. There are so many interesting stories that go on with pool.

Thanks for sharing.

Have a great day geno...........

That has happened to other players here.

If the guy can't tell the difference between 1-P and 8Ball, well... let him ship it all night long.

Serves him right. Anyone that plays at APA 3 or 4 skill level has got no business playing for money. He should save his money for pool instruction from a reputable instructor.

Won his money and somebody else's. Bonus points.

But $10...wonder what he started with?!

I say he got his money's worth!!!
