While watching the TAR ppv Friday night, just after a match, I believe between Silviero/Dimmick, I saw something that rubbed me the wrong way. A couple of things, actually.

At the match's conclusion, a few young guys came over to the stream table, one was on his cell phone and began twirling the balls, sending them spinning around the table, no big deal. Then a couple of the others joined in, still no big deal.

But one of them was hovering over the table with a plastic cup in his hand and it was tilting pretty good at times and I thought; sure hope whatever he's drinking doesn't slosh out of the cup onto the table. This has always been a pet peeve of mine, beverages on, or over, a pool table. :(

Then, one of the other guys plopped one of his shoes right up onto the rail of the stream table and proceeded to tie his shoe. C'mon buddy. I know these Diamonds are practically indestructable, and that it will likely be wiped down before the next match, but have a little respect, will you?

Did he just come from across the street, maybe went for a bathroom break, then figured it's cool to put all that has collected on the bottom of his shoe onto the table rail where players will be competing?

Okay, maybe I'm a little germaphobic (urineaphobic?) and the possibility does exist that I obsess over not wanting spills on a pool table.

But am I unreasonable in my expectations that people should be more respectful than what I've described above?

Best,
Brian kc

I have a pool table. I wouldn't let anyone put their damn shoes on it. It's a piece of furniture, like my couch. I don't let anyone put their dirty ass shoes on my couch either.

That said, I guess they don't care or didn't see it. Most room owners I've run across would be pretty swift to lay the verbal smackdown on their butts.

Sadly, far few rooms have the owners present anywhere where they can see the tables. I've complained to the wait staff at one of my regular pool halls because people will sit on the rails with no feet on the ground 2 or 3 on the same rail sometimes just chatting and they do nothing.

I have to play on those tables every week, but I think their opinion is anything is ok as long as the people order food and buy alcohol.

It's a shame and we could blame lots of people, but I'd place it squarely on the parents who didn't raise the kids right.

It's called "pool etiquette." Some people have it; some people don't! :embarrassed2:

Right you are JAM and it is not only pool etiquette but manners in general. Parents just don't teach the finer points of life such as courtesy, manners and other niceties any more. I am not excluding my grandchildren either.

Sometimes I think it goes to the fact that people are just plain ignorant to pool etiquette. ;)

When I used to work graveyard shift at a local pool room, it used to really annoy me to see cue sticks left leaning on the wall. I'd always go hang them up. Some folks may not realize that a stick can warp when you do this on a regular basis. And we all know there ain't nothing worse than shooting pool with a house cue that's warped.

Unless you're W.C. Fields!

No it's not, it's called "table courtesy". 'etiquette' is far to fancy of a word to associate with pool... Golf is a little more appropriate...

It's a shame good manors seem to be a thing of the passed. Like saying please and thank you. Or opening a door for a older person or a woman. We were taught this things when we were young. Now days most kids don't respect anything I think 95% of that goes back to their parents.

LOL! Yeah, I get what you mean.

There are some things, though, that people should do when playing pool that shows respect not only to their opponent but to the equipment as well. Here's a few that I can remember:

  • Don't bang the head ball with the cueball as hard as you can when racking
  • Never place a drink on the rail of a pool table
  • Leave the chalk portion of the chalk facing upwards and not downwards on the rail
  • Don't leave the cuestick leaning on a wall; hang it up
  • Never tie your shoe on the rail :grin-square:
  • Do not sit on the rail of a pool table
  • Never bang the cuestick on the table after a missed shot

Can you-all think of any others? It's been a long time since I worked a pool room, but the above-referenced are important to keep in mind.

Thats one of my pet peeves too Brian.
One of the main reasons why I wouldn't do well as a room owner.
Even as a player, I can't turn a blind eye to that type of behavior.
I will generally even go out of my way to make a comment to the offenders
when I see that hijinx happening.

You're absolutely right, Kickin'. No respect.
But, the reflection is not on these young men as much as it is on their parents and their willingness, or lack there of, to teach them how to behave in public. :)

Bingo.........................

That's even more disgusting if the guy peed in a public bathroom. Have you seen how yellow the floors near the urinals are

I'm with you 100% here!

That's too f'ckin' funny! Who writes your material? Keith?

LOL! No, that was a JAM original. That's because I used to have to clean them when I worked at the pool room. It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it! :embarrassed2:
