KD cues player Brandon Shuff beats Earl the Pearl

Brandon was nice enough to let me hit a few with his new Kent Davis cue and I MUST say it hits JAM UP!!!

Very good clean work and construction. Brandon's is a steel joint with wood to wood facing and gives a nice hit.

Not whippy and the steel sleeve makes it a little more stable in joint area while having some really good feel with that wood to wood flat facing.

All in all a great cue and nice cue maker for looking out for brandon!!!

Just wondering if Brandon requested the Steel-jointed sleeve or that's what Kent made for him because that's what Kent wanted Brandon to use?

I'm upset about this. I'm heading to Vegas this weekend to watch the tournament. I've never seen Earl play live and was hoping he'd still be in the tourney by the time I get there. Hope he stays alive in the loser's bracket!

I was talking to a friend of mine last night who is there, and we both agree that this tournament is being run the way all tournaments should be run, and that's with no seeding. You draw into whoever you draw into and then wing it from there.

Kahonies to Brandon for beating Earl on the TV table. I'm sure that will be highlighted in his career. Good shooting, Kid, but let's remember that Earl ain't the same Earl that is used to be. He might think he is, but he's not. Earl used to run fives and sixes every tournament match that he played back in the '80s. I don't see it anymore.

I do like the no seeding. Heard Johnny Archer went 8-nothing first round. It gives you a reality check. Everybody starting out even is the way it should be. Nobody should get a head start.

Why didn't you enter the tournament? The fans want to see you bad on the scene!

The match you and earl had in 1988 dayton open,it was a tremendous match,if you watch it again there were no more then 2 or3 at the most racks ran in a row,but it was the best match i have ever seen!Keith i do believe earl has run 5and6s alot ,but not every match.

plus, of course, it is harder to run a bunch of racks playing 10 ball

Keith,
I've heard of those five and six packs back in the day. In recent years, I seldom see five and six packs FROM ANYONE, in major tournaments.

Is the talent level that much less or is the equipment/table difference or something other, which makes the five and six packs look like something only from the past?

JoeyA

Correct me if I am wrong Joey, but it seems to me that the tables play a little tougher nowadays. Alot of the old tourney videos on YouTube look like the tables have 5" pockets and 4.5" is more common today.

What say you??

+1

I watch a lot of pool and those fives and sixes in 10 Ball are unusual. Scott Frost uncorked a five on Daz and it was something to see. Doing it in competition on the feature table made it that much stronger.

Congrats to Brandon on a well played match. I was watching the match with Brooklyn Jay and I asked him what Brandon was playing with. He called it right away as a KD cue. Its good to see a nice guy playing well with a cue made by another nice guy.

If I were a player I'd prefer no seeding as well. Especially if I was a middle to lower seed. However, as a fan I'd want my hero still in the tournament towards the end.

Well JoeyA, if you believe in hard core facts, the data suggests that you are spot on regarding the rarity of 6 packs and similar feats. Observe the following data kindly provided by AZB'er AtLarge from a major 10 ball tourney in March:

Break-and-Run Games

Masters -- 49 of 256 (19%)
Pro Players Championship -- 21 of 119 (18%)
Combined -- 70 of 375 (19%)

So, for that event, 19% of total games (I think this was only recorded on the TV table) were break and runs - just 70 of 375 games. Of those 70 B & R's, how many were consecutive "packages"? Not too many, I would guess. There are only 14 total "5 packs" available mathematically (70 / 5). I would bet that no one in that event ran more than a couple at a time.

I have watched many DCC 9 ball events now, and have seen very few 2 packs, much less anything more than that.

But, to hear some on here tell it, a "pro" just runs out if they can see the object ball after the break like clockwork, and they consider that boring. Perhaps they are watching some different "pro" pool than I do???

Perhaps 19% is too high a b & r %? Shall we go from 4.5" pockets to 3.75"? That, surely, would reduce the b & r % down to the sub 10% range, no?

God, those break and runs are so boring!!!:D

The Seeding Sucks in my opinion! Not everyone can travel the world playing pool and the players that pick and choose events should not be penalized!

You pull your pill out the bottle and put your name on the board. End of story!!! Archer and others that have corporate sponsors and travel on expense accounts have more points because they play more events! Not because they are any better then the other guy!

Some unranked player from Tokyo or Manilla show up and who do they play???? It ain't right!!

The tournament directors are in a tough spot all the time! Pro Players showing up late like archer did at Derby and the tournament directors FORCE the guy to play and not get the forfeit he deserved.

Earl and his antics and no one wants the heat the SBE tournament director got for dropping the hammer on ole Earl!!!

I have seen directors push back matches for these guys! The Domino affect of it being the next match runs really late on that table and when the poor guy comes over after winning to report his score be told we are behind schedule and "YOU GET NO DINNER BREAK" "YOUR UP ON TABLE SEVEN NOW"

You complain and your the bad guy! The tournament director fails to realize the fact the player is being PUNISHED to make up for a decision he made to DELAY matches SUBSTANTIALLY!!!!

Only thing I do not like at US OPEN 10 ball is the winner break rule! Too hard to recover in a short race if someone gets on a streak! A five pack then a safety and a 3 pack and the guy just lost the lag is not a way anyone should lose with out ever getting their chance!!!

alternating breaks is fairest way and you have to maintain or break serve!!!
