I think he has the best record of anyone in an sport. he has dominated for ever.

Lance is a fraud, blood dopeing. I know lots about that topic but will just leave it at that. I never did that, but I have done all the roids, my muscles were all show no go.

Nelson Mandela is a great person.

This is a cool thread,

Diving - Greg Louganis, at the '84 olympics I'm pretty sure every other diver knew damn well going in that they were there to win the silver medal.

English Billiards - Walter Lindrum

Judo - Kimura

all-around male athlete - Jim Thorpe

all-around female athlete - Babe Didrickson

Ok i did some research.....the shot was 2500 ft and it was made with a M-2 browning 50 that carlos mounted a scope on......Dan.....BTW this was a record distance for a confirmed kill at this time and stood for quite awhile untill bested by some canadian......Ehhhh......Dan

The Canadian made that shot with a TAC .50 calibre precision sniper rifle, big difference from the M2 heavy machine gun (usually used as a tank or armor mounted gun) that Hathcock used..... It took them 35 years to best him with superior equipment. There have only been a rare few ever on earth that could carry his jockstrap, and those few have enough reverence to tell you they couldn't wear it.

We have had many threads on the greatest pool player and pretty much have been all over the board. So I got to thinking in all of history in any sport, game, music, art, military, medicine, etc. has there ever been the greatest of all time in one category that is beyond question? That nobody ever debates about.

3 Cushion Billiards = Wille Hoppe The Best

Not going for this.
When Sugar Ray Robinson is ranked over Ali, pound for pound is
usually mentioned.
'Pound for pound' is a two way street....make Sugar Ray weigh as
much as Ali, and Ali would be faster.
Ali was the greatest

Ali still would have been tooled by Joe Louis. 12 years. Record speaks for itself.

Ali was the Minnesota Fats of boxing.

Ali was the Minnesota Fats of boxing.

I will say this about Joe Louis...he could probably give Ali 10 strokes
a side at golf.He played our course (before my time) and shot even par.

He also lost $10,000 to a guy who said he could hit a ball a mile....they
flew to the Grand Canyon and the guy knocked the ball over the edge..
where it was over a mile deep...

..gotta love a man who says "He can run, but he can't hide."

3 Cushion Billiards = Wille Hoppe The Best

Raymond Ceulemans has much better competitive credentials than Willie Hoppe. Still, the original post aks for the names of those who are, undisputedly, the best ever in their discipline. To suggest that Hoppe is, undisputably, the best ever billiards player, is not accurate. His title count doesn't even nearly measure up to that of Ceulemans and his per inning averages were way below those of Blohmdahl.

Hi Stu, I hope all is well.

While I agree with you that Ceulemans or Blomdahl are probably greater than Hoppe, I don't think the average per inning is a good indicator. Hoppe played well before the super thin cloth and heated tables of today. He averaged about 1.0 in tournament play as opposed to the 1.9-2.1 of today but the world class average didn't start to rise above 1.0 - 1.1 until the newer conditions came into the game and then the averages immediately sprung up to about 1.4 - 1.5.....I believe even Ceulemans average went up that same amount almost overnight.
Remember Hoppe ran a 25 under the old conditions...pretty impressive.

Chestnut or Kobayashi.....:scratchhead:

A lot of good examples so far but I have to go with this one. Pretty much everything so far is debatable to some degree.

Please explain how Al Oerter in the discus throw is debatable. His feat of winning a gold medal in the discus in four consecutive Olympics may live forever. In fact, it might be 100 years before another track and field athlete wins a gold medal in the same event in four consecutive Olympics.

I've also never heard of anybody being referred to as the greatest ice hockey player ever but Gretzky. How good was Gretzky? When he arrived on the NHL scene, the scoring record for a season was 152 points. After a 137 point rookie campaign, Gretzky exceeded 152 points in seven consecutive seasons. That's probably on a par with a baseball player batting at least .425 for seven consecutive years, routinely topping Rogers Hornsby's record .424 average time and time again.

I also don't think that Babe Didrikson Zaharias, offered by Bobby, as the best ever female athlete, is debatable.

Don't recall who offered it, but it's not really debatable that Edwin Moses, the hurdler who went undefeated over a ten year period, winning 122 consecutive races, was the greatest ever hurdler. Undefeated for a decade ---- think about it.

I thought of another one: Aleksandr Karelin in wrestling.

Ah you just beat me to it! I was surprised no one had mentioned him. He went 13 years undefeated in Greco-Roman wrestling winning gold at 3 consecutive olympics...at one point I believe he went something like 5 or 6 years without even giving up a single point!!!!
