Can anyone comment on ivory half joints. I saw that Flaco Rodriguez had one on his southwest two weeks ago at breaker billiards and just saw a post with frost also using a half joint.

What is the difference in hit/feel of a half joint compared to a full joint?

As always, thank you in advance for helping my ignorance in the wonderful world of billiards.

I dont know the difference, but I had a S&S cue with a half ivory joint and hit freakin great!

I've made them for years - the 1/2 MIGHT be a bit more solid, but I
woluld not claim that as something you could predict.

I do it mostly for the look. Harvey Martin never used anything else
for 60-ish years.

I understood it to be for weight balance. That's what Ive been told by a CM who makes them.

The best reason for a half joint is to shorten the length of the tenon on the butt. The next best reason is to use half the ivory. A .001" change in a balance point would be awfully hard to detect.

On a flat-face big pin joint, all else being equal, there would be zero detectable difference--whether capped or sleeved. A variety of differences in hit are available with various length/ material type ferrules and tip combos.

Good one:thumbup:

SW's collars are not a full inch long.
They look all 1/2 to me.
Have you ever seen a SW with a long joint collar ?

The reason for short Ivory joints is purely cosmetic and it saves a little expense. I personally favor the looks of one about 3/4".
