Just glad to still be alive..Motorhome VS Geno

Great to hear you came out of it OK with no broken bones. If you bruised your ribs though be ready for a VERY long healing prosess, I have bruised my ribs twice before and a badly bruised rib is as much pain as I have ever felt and I have had some painful moments. They don't get better for at least 6 weeks and in that 6 weeks the pain does not dull one bit.

Get well Geno!!!

After your wounded shoulder, now this...all this bad luck will have to revert some day...
Get well Geno, wish you a fast recovery !!!

I think your right......

I'll tell you what. It still feels like I just got squashed when I lay down or try to get up.

Playing pool is not even a thought.

No wonder the doc gave me a great big bottle of percocet with one refill.

They don't seem to help but I think it would be tough without them.

The good news is it gives me a chance to just think about life and how good things really are. Make some plans and set some goals. As soon as I can get moving I'm going to really be moving.

2 days before I got squashed I quit the metphormin and kept the blood sugar under 120 all the time. Even through this ordeal. I think this will help me heal faster also. It's when a diabetics blood sugar is too high is when the healing becomes a problem.

Anyway, sorry to say I think your right.

I dislocated my left shoulder back in 1996. That was hell for about 2 weeks. had to sleep sitting up. This kind of reminds me of that. tonight i'm going to try sleeping sitting up. Can't be any worse.

Oh well. I'll heal up and it might even be an improvement somehow.

Thanks again geno.......

Sure makes you aware of how tenous is all is. That awarenes hopefully makes for more caution.
Hope you make it out to the Left Coast sometime.

Hi there Jay,

I had the front on jack stands already. I put the back passenger side up and had a jack stand under it. As I was jacking up the last side I had to go under from the back because of the trailer right next to mine.

As I jacked it up to the height I needed the other side must have raised up causing it to tip to the left. I saw it going but thought I was safe becuase there seemed to be plenty of clearance.

On the frame about even with my chest was this dog gone 4 inch wide flat metal that kind of looped down from the frame and then back up. It was about 8 inched long. This was to my right so it didn't seem to matter but with it being jacked up an extra 1 1/2 feet and then falling down it really went alot lower to the ground than normal. Plus as it fell to the left that darn flat metal came down square on my ribs just below my arm pit. I was laying sideways. That's how much room there seemed to be.

The doc told me that it might have take only an inch or 2 and I might have split my everything all over the place. I still can't hardly take a deep breath and laying down is really terrible for the first 15 minutes or so. Sleep is almost impossible even with the Percocet. I hope tonight will be better.

I havn't been playing pool very much right now so I think i will be getting even more out of stroke.

I'm alive. For a few seconds as I was getting the life squished out of me I learned what it is like to feel like it's over.

A person can't even imagine the power of something like that coming down on them.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I need to stick around. I got alot of teaching and I hope playing to do yet.

I feel better already just talking about it and reading all the comments.

Thanks everyone Geno..............You guys are great.......

Geno, I'm glad you survived this mishap. Definitely sounds like a potential fatality. I still have one question. Was the wheel and tire still on the rear driver's side of the vehicle (the last side you were lifting), while you were jacking it up? This should give you an added measure of safety in case the vehicle falls off the jack. I surmise in reading this again that the wheel/tire was still on during this operation. That is the only thing that saved your life. Otherwise it would have definitely crushed you.

P.S. Get those shocks and springs replaced and that may eliminate the problem of the home rocking. That would stiffen up your suspension. No more jack stands or blocks necessary!

Sorry to hear this. Easy does it. As you heal enjoy every breath of air.... Enjoy the rest of your life..... Thankfully you still have it.

No.

You talking about the leaf springs when you say a big piece of curved metal?

It looks like it is some type of way to connect something to pull a vehicle. The main frame is about 4 ft wide. These things are about 2 feet under from the back right on the frame. ?

They are pretty solid.

Again, what the heck is going on inside that motorhome that it keeps rocking? :grin-devilish: :smile-us-down:

Best,
Brian kc

I'm glad you survived to tell the story & the pain is only temporary.

I've seen lots of stories like yours, so I NEVER take chances when I am working on cars. Before I do anything, I think of this (my version of an ounce of prevention...):

A second of thoughtlessness, can lead to years of recovery.

Geno, I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you mend fast and get back to doing what you love. Your DVD helped me greatly, and I thank you for sharing it (though a bit pricey, but that meant less of the guys I know will have the info, more games for me :thumbup::thumbup:).

Seriously, I suggest you listen to Jay's advice for the future. Life is far to short, and I hope to see you around for many more years... Get well soon...

Pete

PS still never called you about the extra info (from a couple of years back when I got your DVD because I had stopped playing).

Hope you feel better soon. The outcome could have been much worse. Instead of your chest , it could have been your head / face that it came down on.
Hang in there Gene....................

You're very fortunate. As I read your story I grit my teeth as I read two things. Trying to jack up the front and back of that monster 30 feet apart, and mostly, when I read two words that should never be used in the same sentence, namely jack and cement block.

Thank God you are ok, and just in general, never ever use cement blocks to jack up cars or trucks, and wow .... motorhomes. They crumble like clumps of grated cheese, all at once with no warning!

It's been a game changer for sure......

I almost bought the big on today.

I was under my motorhome today. The one I plan on using to travel around the country Teaching and playing.

The goal was to jack it up high enough so the frame is on blocks. I'm working in the same area for the next 2 months so i got a spot in a trailer park.

Without the frame being on blocks the motorhome wobbles to much when someone moves making it hard to stay sleeping. it's kind of like having someone shake you every once in a while.

Got the front jacked up and put jack stands on the frame. Then I went to the back. It's 30 feet long. An 89 Fleetwood southwinds.

I jacked up the back right side and everything was fine. Then I went to jack up the left side.

The guy that owned the park had a guy move his camper right next to mine. He got a little close though. When he put out his slide out there was only about 3 inches between the back corner of my motorhome and his which made it impossible to go under from the side.

So I went at it from the back. I used the Hydrolic jack on top of a cement block to raise it up to where it would take most of the weight off the shokes, springs and tires.

I just wanted to raise it up just a little more when it started to fall to the left. I felt pretty safe with where I was at because there was plenty of room for my body even though I was laying on my side.

What I didn't count on was how much the old springs and shocks would let the motorhome bounce down from being up higher and dropping.

Plus there were 2 curved flat pieces of metal about 5 inches wide coming down from the frame in the back. This made a difference of about 4 to 5 inches of less room had I been directly under them.

With the motorhome tipping to the left as it fell this metal part came right down on my ribs. I felt like I was squashed like a pancake. I actually got me twice I think because it rocked pretty hard. The shocks and springs are pretty weak. This is one of the things I needed to replace.

I couldn't get up at first and the guy that had the camper next to me said he was calling an ambulance. I rolled a little because i was still trying to figure out hoew bad i was hurt. After I stood up I realized i should have maybe stayed down.

Now i was up I told my nephew to just drive me to the emergency room. About half way there I wish I was in an ambulance.

I got out of the van and walked into the emergency here in Appleton and the first woman I talked to said I needed to fill out some paperwork.

I told her I was hurt pretty bad. I could hardly stand up by now. It was getting pretty stupid with the pain.

A nurse came up and took me directly to a room and they soon took my in for am MRI.

The good news is there are no broken bones. The bad news is it feels like everything is broke in my chest. Can't breath very good either.

Very happy to be alive though. The difference between the alternative was probably just a few inches. That motorhome is pretty heavy.

I don't know how long it will be before I can work again or play again. Both are out of the question right now. Right now it feels like never.

At ther first sign of something not right I'm supposed to get right back to the hospitol.

The camper that was parked so close got hit by my bumper on the way down. It put a dent/scratch on the side of his slideout of about a foot. Had it not been for him putting his camper/trailer so close I would have been jacking up my motorhome from the side and none of this would have happened. It could have still fallen but there was nothing there to squash me.

When i got back still in alot of pain, but with lots of percoset in me, he made sure I knew that the owner of the park had a guy coming to estimate the damage that was caused to his trail. I almost told him he should have parked a little closer and it wouldn't have fallen at all.

Bad luck. Not only got squashed but will have to pay the damage to his camper that was parked so close. My motorhome shifted to the left about 8 inches when it fell.

Anyway. Lucky to be alive. Doc said in an accident like that it's just a matter of inches.

The good news is I can still talk and I can still teach. I'm going to need something to do while I'm healing up so keep the calls coming in.

Still here. Geno...............

I still can't believe that this happened. It's been like a bad dream for about 5 days now.

Trying to play pool isn't even a thought. Too much pain everywhere. I can't even tell where it hurts the most.

The good news is I'm trying to quit the percocet today. Still alot of pain but those pills are really bad for your health. I'm breaking out here and there on my body and I'm sure it's from them.

Today was the first day I actually could sleep some. I finally feel a little more normal because of the sleep.

I hope many people read this thread and don't make the bad decision that I made. I thought I was safe because the tires were still on but when it's jacked up about 1 1/2 feet higher than normal and the whole thing goes tiiimmmmbbbbeeeerrrrrrrrr the whole body almost touches the ground.

I learned a big lesson. Had I known what I know now this would never have happened. Fortuanately I had the opportunity to learn here from my mistake. So many other people were not so fortuanate.

As far as pool goes I don't know yet. My shoulder, chest, ribs all seem to not fit together real good right now. I even have trouble brushing my teeth but I'm alive. I was going to play in thesew great tournys down in Beloit,Wi the next 2 weekends but I can say for sure that it won't happen.

I just hope I can get back to work and keep rolling with my teaching and traveling around the country. If i can do that I guess it would be huge.

Just have to see how it plays out here. Moving slow but I'm moving. Breathing careful but I'm breathing. It only hurts right now when I breath or move. :crying::rotflmao1:

My plans are going to be set back a week or 2 for sure. But I still plan on getting on the road again traveling from pool hall to pool hall teaching and playing again but I have a change of heart though about this motorhome business.

I need to work real hard as soon as I can and get sell the motorhome I have right now. I need to buy one that is newer and bigger and is more like a home. Plus I need one that has built in hydrolic jacks that work.

Where there is a will there is a way and that is one thing i still have is a will.

And if i have anything to say about this whole thing my plans WILL still happen.

Thanks everyone for the kind words here on the forum. I see players all the time wishing players to get well and recover from this or that. It really does mean alot when your on this end of the stick to hear that you guys care.

Thanks again geno..........

Get well Geno

You might as well start a bk- The chronicles of life on the Road as a PoolPlayer, teacher ,instrutor. Get a big map, start writting on that-then a few yrs from now you can rewrite it and Probibly have a Movie Made. There's been plenty of Movies about RV's. I know its not a laughing matter now- but soon it will. I went on a fishing trip- and have plenty of laughs myself to write the same RV novel,script-whatever. I can tell stories of the grocerys floating in the shower, because my Uncle hooked up the water wrong, He got the boat trailer we were pulling stuck in a Police Parking lot in Wis. got it out turned around and stuck it in the tar again. He installed a new gas tank in the boat(the rear) filled with gas(the front of the boat was out of the water! He just added gas to a tank that sat for 6 yrs. told us it was tuned up- never mind the 7 mile trolling ride in to the dock- because we couldn't keep the fwater from filling ,clogging the fuel filter. The wooden deck broke trolling . I had zubas (pants) that got wrapped into the flywheel when my foot broke through the floor. Never mind Richard being sea sick,or having the shits and sitting on a five gallon pail most of the day- They bought a smashed motorhome and the fishing trip was the trial run. Nevermind the gap when it rained from the windsheild halfs. Or when the brakes failed in town and we almost rolled it-dumping everything onto the floor. including the ole brake fluid pumping getting fluid in his eyes, and on and on. They had just come home from a Rollover in calif. where the cruisecontrol spun the tires in the mountains and they hit the guard rail and flew home from calif. go figure. There's more to come- have a great time geno Mark
