Fantastic young kid wants to go on the road

A friend from high school went on to become a millionaire in the cell phone business. He contacted me about a month ago because he knew I was into pool, he used to come over my house to play on our table, I used to go on the road, I play decent and have friends who are champion players, etc.

I was shocked to hear that he is now part owner of a pool hall that opened in a small Texas town about three months ago because of the influence I had on him. Actually it is advertised as a billiard academy with monthly fees to play and get lessons from better players.

He tells me that two brothers showed up to take lessons and started killing all of his instructors. That area of Texas is going through an oil boom and these two kids are from another country. One is 21, the other one is 18.

I tell my friend to bring them to San Antonio and let me play with them to see how good they are. The older brother shoots damn good, he could probably beat 95% of the gambling players in San Antonio. He shoots like a pro, low down on the cue, nice smooth stroke, etc. He runs out any open table of nine ball. I told him that the best players in town give me the five ball and I come about even with them. So we play for about an hour with me getting the five ball and we come out about even. With the five ball spot I can run two or three racks but this kid just keeps coming back with full rack runouts.

Then my friend has a huge grin on his face and tells me to play the other brother. The younger brother is an obvious special needs kid from the look of him. We play some nine ball and he just runs out again and again. He is constantly licking his lips, he chalks his cue about ten times before each shot, he is constantly asking for new chalk. He has this huge grin on his face the whole time. When I leave him safe he just kicks the ball in or he will shoot a three rail through traffic like it was nothing. I get the orange crush, the five and the breaks and he pulls ahead.

I am figuring he is an Idiot Savant, he can see three or four rail shots, kicks, angle of where to hit the object ball and speed, etc. Also his stance is nothing like his brothers who looks like a pool players. This kid stands just about straight up, hardly does any practice strokes and just keep making balls.

So my friend wants to take them on the road, any suggestions on how to make some real money off of these two kids. My friend has the money to be able to go to towns and spend enough time there with these two kids to really work the players.

Yes. Send them to college. Have them learn something besides pool. It's the only way they are going to make "real money".

Bring him to Manila. He can get all the action he wants for whatever price he wants. It is all about pool and gambling. If the sponsor has money, why not?

Plenty of great youth players here that will play him also for the cash.

At least he will leave here a much better player instead of just going to US pool halls and begging for action and having to play a champion to get any action.

ROFLMAO:D

I only read the OP....but.....I find it funny as hell that in one single post he knocked the exact thing he is trying to slide in on someone.

This is the INTERNET man. 20 seconds after you posted that pool detectives all over the U.S. were on the lookout for Rainman with a cue trying to snap them off.

Since all future action is now dead tell the kids to get a trade, skill or education.

They may as well play in the US Open. If they don't embarrass themselves too badly there, take them to Derby City so they can learn other games.

But I think the OP was pulling our collective leg.

i live in San Antonio and there is little to no action unless one plays John Drew Hager.
I havent seen a stranger here that could run racks since Moby Dick was a guppy.

Rainman with a cue is too funny!

Thanks for all of the replies. My friend is the one that wants to take them on the road, I did tell him it is not like it was in the old days as many of you pointed out.

BUT

As far as an education, both of these kids are in college.

As far as how they play, Trent hit it on the head, have them play someone who can actually play first. As far as I know, me being about an APA 6, I think they are damn good but my friend is not looking at putting them up against any top pros.

As far and just putting them in tournaments, well that would not even give my friend a chance to try to have some fun. It not about hustling, stalling, sandbagging but about working a pool room and playing from the bottom up, not going into a place and challenging the best player in there your first time.

When I went on the road years ago with my father, Rafael Martinez, Little Al Romero, etc, we waited for the players to ask us for action and picked the weaker players first, then worked our way up the food chain. I think this can be done nowdays too. Have somebody that knows the local player level that just wants to get in on the railbird action.

JB cases wins for what I think is the best answer to the original question. I am working on the cue case as I type and will order the APA patches, Hustlin USA shirts, etc later tonight.

CaliRed asked if he goes by the name of Buffalo, hahaha, but that is a good point here. I don't know if either one of these two kids could beat Jason Hunt but I feel the younger one could. I played Buffalo a few times with the five ball spot and we broke about even like I did with the older brother but we were playing for a few dollars. I figure Buffalo would play better for more money. When Buffalo first hit SA he was winning, he lost some because he would get drunk, and he cut alot of his action by getting kicked out of pool halls and tournament. Buffalo or Shane Manaole are not pros but they get some decent wins from time to time and they ARE known locally. Shane was making some decent scores at Bananas his first month in town until he got kicked out.

These are two decent players, not pros that made some money within a month of getting to San Antonio.

As far as the internet goes, a guy came through San Antonio with his girlfriend about a year ago. He was from Florida, his girlfriend was on the womens pro tour at the time and they were headed for Arizona or someplace, I forget. But in one night they took almost a thousand dollars out of bananas and as some say, San Antonio has no action. It was not until the next day that somebody figured out the guy had placed 4th in the US OPEN 9 ball tournament a few years earlier. Both he and his girlfriend took off the local girls and guys. I figure they were in a hurry to get on the road but if they had spend a week in town I figure they may have made five to ten thousand in a week. Of course they did not mention his 4th place or her being on the womens pro tour when they were here, hahaha.

As far as the description of the brothers, it was right on. I like that, look out for Rainman with a cue, hahaha. Why do you think I use the name Cesar Morales, I think it was the best hustle ever.

Bottom line here, I have had a few PM's from people who feel these kids could make some money in their area so lets go further with this, I think it is working.

If you think you can get some action for these kids in your area, PM me.

Olathe ks (shooters) would be a nice stop! What do they want to play for? Maybe we can find a game or two!

Pm for details.

games : 8ball, 9ball,10ball,1 pocket,

7 ft barbox , 9 footer ?

Make sure those APA patches are all 8 & 9 on the snaps, and don't forget the Budwieser cue, or one that breaks down into 5 or 6 pieces. You might also consider some arm weights, a hot pink glove, and yellow "shooters" sunglasses. ;)

That's right. If you put on a good enough show people don't mind getting hustled. While you are at it, you might as well push them into the pool hall in a wheelchair. Throw in a neck brace for good measure and make sure they both appear to have early onset Parkinson's while shooting.

hello

Advice stop the bullshit take them to white diamonds October 7-8-9 and see what your kids can do .just the way they made a big deal about the kid that played efren and was highly talk about that he was on efrens level of playing pool .wtf ever the kid lost like 13-0 . Who cares about the millionaire friend if you want exposer with you challenge kids just show up and play.

hmmm

What a goofy thread. Some millionaire, with nothing better to do, wants to go help a few above average players hustle a few grand in various towns across the US? Really?

I'm not buying a word of this crap. Sorry, this guy should have better things to do then try and make a few grand off a couple of teenagers. But if this is true, then why not do what Jay and some others have said. Sponsor them in some local and state tourneys, and send them to US Open, DCC, etc. to compete.....

Would it not be fun to see a couple of aspiring players move to the top with the right direction and encouragement, not to mention some strong financial backing.

Not my first choice career wise, but if they love this then give them a legitimate shot at it and do it the right way, not some two-bit cheesy hustler scam that some millionaire wants to get his rocks off. The 70's are over, deal with it.

I am inclined to see BS too.

A millionaire from cell phone world?! He woulda losta lotta millions in the last 5yr...and such an individual would likely have very little inclination to toss $ around poolrooms.
