Market price is set by the market. I can sell a #2 pencil for $100, but if no one buys it, it's not worth that.
Please post a pic of the pencil. It won't sell on here without a pic. I am interested. Is the eraser in good condition?

The cue this thread was started about was a Searing. Does Dennis's work qualify as a very high end collectors cue for you? It does for me.
If the thread was started about setting values on Dale Perry's cues I wouldn't have chimed in with George Balabushka and Gus Szamboti examples (I wouldn't have an opinion at all other than the thing is worth what someone will pay and be happy with).
Thanks again
Kevin
I believe the title of the thread was "What sets the market price for a cue? ". I was just trying to answer that question generally. If the title had been "What sets the value of custom cues so high?" I would not have responded since I don't know much about that market. Sorry if my comments annoyed you.
Thats great news. I have approx 20 of them in my basement. I am a rich man now, yes?
I forgot, my name isn't Dennis. But I am a Menace.

As far as the strong protecting the weak, again, the opinion in that thought itself is rampant.
Thanks
Kevin

That Sneakey might be the best playing cue on earth. If so $3K is a great price.
What confuses me is people that buy a cue for its inlays rather than how it plays. Yes Inlays adds cost and resale value but are you a collector or do you want a player?
If you walked by my cue you would probably just keep walking. And that's exactly what I told DD to give me. A great cue that nobody will notice from 10 feet away.
Thanks for all the replies. I really didn't intend to cause a ruckus. Congrats to Kevin. Good luck to all of the sellers and buyers out there.
FYI...I deleted the link to the for sale thread. So all of you that quoted my OP and thought I was out of line please edit your posts and delete the link as well.
So all of you that thought I was out of line...
Our Kev gets a wee bit upset if you dare say something which may jeopardise a sale...
Fond of his cash.
Your question wasn't out of line, it was a good one that no one really answered. Whenever I see one of these traditional 4-point cues with maybe a single ring at the bottom and people get all excited, call it a "MONSTER" (their emphasis) and yet all I see is a house-cue with a ring.
Saying that it's worth whatever someone will pay isn't really an answer. It's true, but doesn't answer the question of why a house cue with a joint is worth 3K, or at least why isn't it considered odd it picked up so much value? I can pick up a two-piece Dufferin house cue for $125 here, today, with a SS joint. I have a Dufferin sneaky (wood-to-wood) I paid $175 for and shot with twice. I don't think it's worth 3K either. The extra $50 compared to what I can buy now is just for that invisible joint.
Not a cool post at all. Who are you to talk crap about his cue sale? As a general question this is fine but linking something that somebody is trying to sell is bullcrap.
Ernie Gutierrez actually made some bridges. I just can't remember if they were Gina original bridges or mere conversions.
I sold this cue, which is a house cue conversion made by some guy named George, on eBay for $4600 in an auction I started for$9.99 with no reserve. Not only was there one guy crazy enough to pay that, but there was a bidder right below him willing to pay $4,500. When the auction was over I got not one but 2 eMails from non-bidders saying they missed the auction and could they have the name of the guy who bought it so they could buy it from him. For some reason these guys saw more than $80 value in a converted house cue. Maybe they needed the protection of someone who really knew cue values to help them with how to think.

Kevin and I have had our differences, that's for sure. But to his defense he put the cue he mentioned on ebay and started it at $9.99. A bidding war insued and he claims he collected $4,600. If all of this is true you can't call him greedy just because of this.
All the op had to do was leave out "give me a break" and no one would have said anything. There is obviously a select few people who will pay big $$ for a name even if its on a converted bar cue and that is probably who he was referring to.Actually.....that is incorrect. Read the W/FS Forum Rules...you may not make any type of derogatory reference to asking price, within a W/FS thread. A seller can ask whatever they wish...doesn't mean they're going to get it.
As long as you have proof....you can make mention as to any knowledge as to true condition, repairs, or scam...but that's pretty much it.
You are, however, free to start another thread wishing to discuss any given cue or seller or maker, in the appropriate forum.
