I hope this isn't true Mosconi Cup

As we all know they have not yet announced the non playing captains for the MC. I have heard from two different places that Charlie Williams has been pushing to get the position and that he is probably going to get it this year.
There is something not right about this if it is indeed true. First off, CW is Korean and seems to represent the USA or Korea depending on his mood I guess. His name is Korean Dragon, not USA Dragon. Secondly He is in my opinion NOT qualified to be the non Playing captain for the USA team. There are I am sure plenty of qualified people out there that could fill this spot better than CW. Nick Varner is the elder statesman of the USA Team withall the qualifications you would want for that position. I am sure all can come up with a reasonable replacement for Nick if needed but CW is not even close in my opinion.
Now again, I have heard this twice now and I can't say that it is 100% gonna happen. But once the decision is made Matchroom will NOT change it because people complain, it's their event and they can and will do as they like with it and IMO rightly so. I do think though that if enough people object to this "Potential" decision they may change their mind before it gets into the public eye.
So in closing post in this thread who you think should be the non playing captain and why. If you feel so inclined please post why CW should not be captain just in case thats the direction it is going. These sources are good ones and reliable, not just a guy I met at the bar on league night who thinks it might happen.
Finally, GO U.S.A This Year is ours.

My vote against the Korean Dragon

I hope this is not true.
I don't think that Charlie Williams is good for the game.
I just sent my protest to Matchroom Pool.

Mosconi captain

Not sure who it will be - but I think it should be an American. I agree that Nick Varner seems to be a good captain and surely has all the tools to do a good job.

And he has always pushed pool in the US with a high degree of integrity.

Who ever Matchroom chooses should be someone who really represents the US. (maybe they should pick Earl Strickland - that would really electrify the crowd and the teams! No one is more American than Earl!)

Btw, as a separate (but related) question, is it Europe against north America or just the US? In other words, could a Canadian be on the US team?

Ater all, I think Europe has something like 38 countries in it.

I was under the impression Charlie Williams is an American Citizen and represents the US in international competition. I'm not certain of this however. I just looked at the IPT site (only because I remember it had a flag next to each player's name), and Charlie is listed as an American there.

I do agree he is not a good choice to be the captain, but that is for pool related reasons, not because he is of Korean descend.

I think he goes both ways depending which side pays. Let's not forget Mosconi Cup is sure pay event and if you get paid just to show up heck who wouldn't do anything to get there?

But on a very serious note, I hope Jay is right...

However, it is odd that no team captain has been announced for Team USA yet...

Love or Hate Charlie to my knowledge he has never played for Korea in anything but his own made-for-tv events IN Korea. Jeannette Lee has also played for Korea in some of those events. These are the little race to 3 TV productions Charlie puts on in Korea with the backing of decent outside industry sponsors.

Charlie and Jeanette are both Americans with Korean heritage. Them celebrating their heritage is no different than someone who celebrates their Irish lineage, their Russian, etc.... I make cases for people all the time who are Americans but who want symbols of their heritage on their cases.

So there is no need to debate Charlie's American-ness. Let's not go the birther route on our own pool people ok?

Charlie Williams is American.... he was born and raised in Newport News VA as far as I know..... I'm not even 100% sure he even knows how to speak Korean....lol

Also Charlie has represented team America as a playing member of the team on at least one occasion.

Someone saying Charlie shouldn't play for team USA but for Korea instead is like someone saying I should have to play for Scotland because my great grandparents were from there and I have a red beard.

The discussion of him being captain of the team is a legitimate question but his eligibility should not be.

I'm against CW being the captain also, but not based on his Asian background. CW is a US citizen that plays the Korea card simply because he is proud of who he is..............................................another AMERICAN that has roots from somewhere outside of the US. (Believe it or not, we all have that in common. It's just more apparent from face to face.)
I might be reading wrong, but those you you who suggest he shouldn't be a captain because he comes from a non-US background sound pretty narrow minded and borderline racist to me. Again, if I'm wrong and I misunderstood the intentions of previous posts, I apoligize.

Nick has done it plenty times before.

I would give Jose Parica the job. He adopted the USA as his home completely and would probably be super proud to captain the USA team and appreciate the sentiment.

Jesters.Your Joking,Right?

Hmm,

Is this the same Charlie Williams who wore a cardigan when he played Johnny Archer in a recent Ustream event ?:boring2:

From this side of the pond I have to side with Europe to win.

Let's hope for a great tournament and the real winner is the game of pool.;)

As long as Nick Varner is alive...he should be the non-playing captain. Seriously...can you name any American with better credentials on and off the table than Varner? The Mosconi Cup stands for excellence at the highest level in pocket billiards...coupled with the highest levels of competition..and hopefully sportsmanship......this description defines Nick Varner.

Nick Varner should be the pick all the way. Why would Williams even be considered (other than he knows how to pull strings)?

I'd love to see a senior Mosconi cup for 50+ players. I doubt the U.S. could possibly lose that, we'd have:

Varner
Sigel
Rempe
Strickland
Hall

also:
Hopkins
Davenport
Hunter
McCready
Garcia

Mosconi captain

When I said the captain should be American, I should have been more clear.

I know Charlie is an American citizen (and he really cannot speak much Korean at all) - I just thought he had played in some international events and had represented Korea.

Mika lives in US and cannot play for USA in WPA events. I believe Ernesto Dominguez has represented Mexico in WPA events but cannot represent USA. I don't pretend to understand all of these conflicting issues- but I do think a player should represent one nation in these international competitions.

And if I insinuated it was a race thing, I apologize. I am not racist. I have always tried to judge a person by their character and not their race.

That defines alot of people. Are there people with "better credentials?" then Nick Varner? No, but IMO there are alot of players besides Nick Varner that could do just as well, who are of the same pedigree in terms of ability, and who are just as much ambasadors to the sport.

Nick is a good pick, but IMO he should not lock down the position for the next 20 years. The non-playing captain is a way to see many different old school faces from the past taking part in a major tournament. Going with the same guy for year after year misses out on great opportunities to give the opportunity to other former champs and legends as well.

I like Nick and as far as I know he was a good captain. But being that Nick is one of the good ol boys, I think they should give someone else a chance thats not in the group. If its CW I won't watch any of it. Johnnyt
