Way to go, ABP Pros..... way to go.....

Wonder when anyone from the ABP account will 'grace us' with their presence, and tell us how Charlie Williams became team captain...... :scratchhead:

Yup, the drive-by press release is imminent. In the background and around the corner, I hear the SmartCar with the air-chiseled exhaust pipes, air-powered shocks being lowered to a couple inches off the ground, and loud boom-boom music, revving its engine...

I think it is little weird picking Charlie as captian. In my opinion an older player like Mike Segal, Buddy Hall or Jimmy Rempe would have made a far better choice. Someone that the team respects as a player not just a nice guy. Williams has won few if any big tournaments in his career and his Mosconi Cup record is not that great either. Nothing personal against Charlie but I think a very poor choice for caption.
i agree i think the older wiser HOF woulda been a better pick then cw

Just received the email from Matchroom and it is confirmed.

2011 Mosconi Cup Latest

Williams Named as USA Skipper

CHARLIE WILLIAMS will captain the USA team at the 18th annual PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup which takes place at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 8th to 11th December.

It will be Williams’ debut as a captain although he has played in the event five times (2001-2005) and been victorious on four occasions. He sports a playing record of 12 wins from 21 matches.

In his capacity of head of Dragon Promotions, Williams has had great success coaching individual players over the past few years and coupled with his experience as a competitor in the event, it was felt that he was the man to revive American fortunes after last year’s defeat.

"I am undeniably thrilled to be chosen to captain this USA Mosconi Cup team. I've been on the team as a player five times, but in many ways this is even more of an honor,” said Williams.

“The Europeans no doubt have a solid team with Darren, Niels, Ralf, Nick and Chris, but when I look at our roster with Rodney, Shane, Johnny, Shawn, and Mike I honestly feel we are more than their match.

“Of course anything can happen in the Cup, but you have to believe in your team and I can't help but really believe in this one," he added.

Williams’ job will be to gather his side in Las Vegas, put them through their paces in the build-up and then guide the team through often choppy waters once play gets underway at 11am on Thursday 8th December.

Commented Rodney Morris, who will be making his eighth appearance in Vegas; “Charlie will make a good captain. He’s helped me with my game recently, he's a good motivator, and has played in Mosconi before, so he's very familiar with the team concept.”

Johnny Archer added, “I think Charlie will bring his coaching skills to Team USA and I look forward to going after Team Europe with Charlie at the head of the team.”

Williams is under no illusions as to what he will be up against.

"Team Europe will be a challenge, of that there is no doubt and their captain Johan Ruijsink has a strong, systematic approach with his players. He is a full-time professional Olympic-recognized coach, and he is undefeated in three Mosconi Cups.

“As a professional coach myself, I've worked with many of the world's greatest players and I understand the value of great coaching and definitely won't underestimate Europe's team or captain.

“This is why I feel Team USA deserve the same kind of fortitude and attention and my plan is to give that to them. Our USA boys this year are a close knit group that love and care about each other off and on the table and that's going to shine through in Vegas."

"These guys all know how to play already. I'm just here to try to help them get the most out of themselves and I'll do whatever the task needs of me to accomplish that."

Tickets for the Mosconi Cup are priced at $35 per day or $120 for the four day season passes and booking charges will apply.

Currently the Mosconi Cup is sold through Ticketmaster (1-800-745-3000) or MGM Resorts Contact Center (1-866-740-7711).

I believe I am going to reconsider going this year. Some things are so far beyond the pale they are not to be stomached, at least not by me.

My problem with this pick is Charlies wavering on where he's from.

When it benefits him he's not from here, he's from another country, and I can't remember anytime I've spent with
Buddy, Varner, or a few other good picks, them saying "I'm from Canada or England, they are always from the USA.

I know this bothers others as it was a topic of conversation St the DCC Last year

Another reason US pool is in the toilet.

Politics, ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY

JA and his boys did what they had to do to get their boy a pay day.

I understand your point for sure. In all fairness, though, Charlie Williams is from the United States and is American, though because of his heritage, he has represented Korea in pool events.

Same holds true with Omar Kang representing India, I guess, and Raj Hundal as well. Both of them don't call India home, as they grew up in another land.

Mika Immonen got a green light to compete in a Chinese tournament on a North American BCA ticket this past year, even though he's supposed to represent Finland. He hadn't competed in enough European Tour events to qualify, so the American representative pool organization helped him out. I don't think that is fair and just. All players should be treated equal.

Alex Pagulayan has represented Canada and Philippines, and he has dual citizenship.

I'm sure there's more players I'm forgetting that represent countries other than where they live for the majority of the life, currently and in the past. Kelly Fisher (England) and Karen Corr (Ireland) come to mind.

Wouldn't it be interesting if everyone buy Johnny and
Shawn quit the team

Oh and To Johnny and Shawn, remember if you're mic'd up that when you go to the bathroom, your mic is still on, (only to a much bigger audience)

Here's my list of possibilities:

Sigel
Hall
Varner
Incardona
Reid
Rempe
Diliberto
Grady (I know he can't right now, but why hasn't he done it before?)
Freddy Bentivegna
Hopkins
Pretty Boy Floyd

I would throw Jay Helfert in the grouping as well. He's been pretty active in the pool world in recent years, and he has a strong knowledge of the game as it has evolved from the past to today's pool culture. He has helped many a player in the past with their game as well as their livelihood.

Funny thing about the ABP/APB/whatever it is, the majority of players in the group do not like CW. There is a small handful of people that actually like him and I would venture a guess that most of those very few would actually be on team Europe if they were playing in the cup.

I can think of one player on the current team that might possibly, maybe kinda might vote for CW as a captain but in all honesty, I don't think that they would. I feel sorry for the players not only for not being able to choose their coach but for also being stuck with someone so disliked amongst them as CW.

Luke or whoever made that decision must be busting a gut laughing at his decision and the reaction that we and secretly the players are having over this choice. Well played matchroom. Europe definitely got a leg up going into to the series.

I don't see how CW as captain will affect how Team USA plays pool. Charlie may be there for support to them, but they're going to probably play the same way they'd play with him or without him, IMO.

Dennis Hatch would have been a brilliant choice, mainly because everybody likes him -- the players and the fans. He knows how to build a "team spirit."

Helllll YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Team USA definitely gonna win this year now. Now USA is stealing.

These are reasonable choices, but I'd like to see the captaincy go to a grand old man of the game who tends not to get the credit he deserves because his career was, unfortunately, cut short.

Kim Davenport, to me, is the best choice out there. Great player, great person, great dresser. He is a role model in our sport in so many ways.

Charlie is an unexpected choice, but I'll take this opportunity to wish him every success in his bid to recapture the Mosconi Cup for the US.

My Captain's pick

The European captain is a non-player but a very respected member of the pool community and coach from Europe. He is also 3-0 as European captain.

So my pick for team USA captain would be a similar personality who is well respected by players, fans and most in the know. He is also a world class coach. MARK WILSON. He would be the guy to hold the team accountable and to rally the troops IMO.

Incardona and Varner as back ups. They are the EF Hutton of the pool world.
