Another Day in Manila

It was a welcome change to hear Jay's commentary last night. A big improvement over the past weeks matches. Man, there was some terrible shooting by both players. Just enough to make the match exciting. Django got so many bad rolls but somehow got out of the mess. On one of the very first games. Django shot the 9 ball, and for no apparent reason, drew the ball at 105 mph and went at least 5 feet too far! That was very strange. Peach missed at least 4 straight shots!

Very nice post, Jay! I always love reading 'em.
And I kid you not!

I watched the Django-Peach event on TV last night
and when I heard the voice of who was doing the commentary
with my friend, Biboy Soriano, I instantly knew it was you.

Welcome back to the Philippines!

P.S.

Please keep the stories coming....

Jay Im getting more than a little worried about you there. Being comfortable in the PI can be very dangerous buddy. Keep your antenna up at all times. You are a target always! Your comment about the pick pocket shows your not THAT street smart. Eyes open, money down your shorts, no jewelry, no wallet. Yes PI is a great place. But 1 or 2 times of something bad happening will change your mind. Dont let THAT happen. The good news is you are waaay smarter than the average thief. Use your head. Giving those cute kids 5ps...they will come back and bug you until they get more and all those around them will KNOW you have money. Best to just smile and move on.

Cheers and I wish I was there with you again! Ingat always! Next time we meet up, I want to see your game

Bob

Where can we watch Busta vs Peach? Is it streamed?

Due to some internal conflict, there was no live streaming, but it will be back in place for next weeks match between Lee Vann and Yang from Taiwan. That should be a good one!

Francisco never looked loose and was struggling to get out almost every rack. When he over played shape on the eight when leading 5-2 and let Darryl back to the table, it was a turning point in the match. Instead of 6-2 it was 5-3. Darryl breaking. Peach looked fairly comfortable after that and was running out while leading 8-7 and missed a fairly easy eight ball.

There were mistakes, as well as excellent shots by both players, and it was a very exciting match with many twists and turns before reaching hill-hill. There was quite a bit of action at the Book in the casino. The line kept changing with each rack. Django opened as a 2-1 favorite, but after Peach took the lead, he became a small favorite. Megasportsworld.com is working on a partnership with another site so that bettors worldwide can wager on the matches. So far only filipino's can bet online. Television viewership is growing each week, with perhaps a few million watching, much higher than ESPN gets here in the USA for the women's pro matches. They love their pool over here and don't let anyone tell you that pool won't work on TV. It does!

Thanks Bob, I'm pretty street smart with good radar, but anyone can get fooled once. I had an incident late at night on Mabini St. last year when three street guys confronted me with a "request" for money. I was with my girl and I didn't want trouble, but one guy put his fingers on my chest so I pushed him away HARD! I grabbed her hand and walked away quickly. They looked a little confused and never made a move to follow me. I'm an old f'ck but I still have a little fight left in me.

P.S. I love to play with guys from AZ whenever given the chance, which is not often enough. Seems I'm always working at these tournaments. At DCC I've played a few short games here and there, that's about it. If you come out to L.A. sometime we can hook up.

Pangit you are correct, I was in the park the other night and small groups of very young kids came to us and sang Xmas carols. I LOVED IT! Such beautiful children and they were not begging. I would give them each 5P and they would run off laughing. Inside I was laughing too. :D

This is a land of smiling faces, friendly greetings, and many small considerations. Yes, there are often long delays, but unlike the Army, it's well worth it. Delicious fresh fruit available everywhere, NO pesticides either! Plus our money has real value here. Only electronic products are priced the same as in the USA. I can buy a nice motorbike for $1,000, a good car for $5,000 or a large condo for $30-50,000. Good food is pennies on the dollar compared to back home.

It's only a "hell alot fun" if you are a "tourist" Sure it's "fun" when you are staying in the Manila Diamond Hotel and "experience" it at Rizal Park. Makes for a great Post Card. I don't like it at my front door... Any time of the day or night.
Pinoy employee's will knock U out of the way to walk down an isle first at the local 7-11, if that happened in the good ole USA, U wouldn't have a job anymore. These packs of kids are like stray-cats and beggers...feed 'em once...U own 'em, there are no "disturbing the piece laws" in the PI...My worst nightmare is my next-door Neighbor buying a Videodisc machine. Especially if he has a friend that is a part of the PNP and is also a Free Mason. Untouchable.
Iv'e been to 29 countries around the world over 3 decades...never had my pocket picked....even one time. Street smarts.
Thing's aren't always as they seem.

Well Pangit, if you don't like it there, whats stopping you from moving back to good old USA?

No matter where you go there is real life and tourist life. Regarding people being mannered when shopping I think you missed the story about the woman who pepper sprayed 20 others at a Wal-Mart last weekend trying to get an X-Box.

China is the same way in that people will claim any opening and shove ahead of you when they can. I put up with it for the first two years but now I fight back and hold my spot and guess what, it works. When in Rome.......

I had my pocket picked in Turkey on my first trip through the outdoor market. But the guy only got my calculator because my mom taught me to keep all the money next to my balls in my front pocket.

I also had my cell phone stolen once in China because I was really foolish and left it in an outside pocket sticking halfway out going through a crowd.

I think that if you live in a country and you don't like it and you have the means then you should move. I don't think I could live in Manila. Nor can I enjoy life in Bejing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, New York City (although I am sure I could live with NYC), or any other big city. I like smaller cities like Charlotte or Xiamen where I live now. Not too crowded, relatively calm with friendly people and not so many people trying to get over on you.

Nonetheless Jay Helfert is not a "tourist" anymore in the Philippines. He has been giving us man-on-the-street reports for five years now and probably knows about as much as an expat who lives there full time.

Frankly, I like his viewpoint and the way he carries himself over there.

If you don't want to be bothered by street kids and noisy neighbors, why don't you move to a subdivision or some exclusive village. I understand you're in Subic, Olongapo, where the US naval base used to be, which is 90 miles north of Manila. There are a lot of affordable subdivisions between subic and Manila, in the Bulacan and Pampanga area.

Sounds like a typical broke dick ex-pat who didn't save enough to live even a modest life in America *****ing because local culture won't pander to his grumpy ass. You give Kano a bad name with that attitude. Well at least you chose the correct hame.

You don't have a clue how I spend my time over here. I'm on the "street" every day, walking the narrow alleyways and going pretty much wherever I please. Trikes, jeepneys, buses and trains are all my modes of travel, with my feet being used the most. :)

I LOVE to explore, and if there is a little risk attached so much the better. I don't mind a walk on the wild side occasionally. That's the spice of life my friend. It's just like when you make a game with a stranger, you are apprehensive and excited at the same time. Yesterday I took three jeepneys (total cost 30P) to visit an ex GF in Cavite. She wanted me to see her new baby, which she named after me (not mine, I'm only the Godfather). After getting off the last jeepney and meeting her, she led me down dark and narrow walkways for maybe one kilometer to reach her "house." It was late at night and sitting outside along the path were men (some drinking) and women who would say "Hello Joe" to me as I passed by. I would acknowledge and smile at each one, saying something to them as I passed, maybe "Hello Bata" or whatever came to mind. They would usually laugh at hearing my voice and wave to me. I feel like I can make friends anywhere and have already circumnavigated the planet when I was a very young man, crossing lands and countries where an American cannot go now.

My friend's house was a section of a small brick building that had only two rooms. The outside room was her kitchen and bathroom (CR). This room had no roof, only open air above. Her other room was her bedroom and she slept on a thin mat. Both were very small rooms but she was proud of her home. It was late and I was tired so I slept on that floor also (not exactly a four star hotel). At night when I had to pee, I got up and walked over the wet kitchen floor to the CR. It has only a bare urinal with no seat or flushing mechanism. There are no tissues so I carry my own. After finishing, I wash my hands in the kitchen sink. She has a beautiful little boy and I was happy to see him and her. I'm glad that I went. In the morning she made hot tea for me and took me to the highway to catch a bus back to Manila, a one hour trip.

How was your day?

P.S. Along the way I often see small one or two table open-air billiard rooms. I always get the urge to jump out and play some with the locals. Do I worry about the quality of the tables or the cues? NOT at all! I do carry a tip scuffer and scotch-brite pad at all times. With these two simple tools I can work a tip and smooth a shaft. Then I'm good to go.
