Why do people put chalk...

...on the rail upside down or on its side? It leaves chalk EVERYWHERE. I played a friend of mine yesterday at my house and I leave IPT chalk on the rails for him to use. I have a cube of Kamui in a holder I use. Anyway, there is chalk all over the place. Is he clueless, does he just not care, how do you tell someone that they are making a mess without offending?

This may seem petty and for those that think so, I am sorry. It is one of my pet peeves.

I agree, perhaps for a different reason. If you are wearing light colored clothing and leaning across the table for a shot, you WILL touch whatever is on the rail (including chalk powder). Some people that put the chalk part down on the table may think that they are protecting others from getting the upright chalk on their clothing...WRONG !!!
The only way to correct this wrong is TELL THEM!
I.M.O.
AND I could bring along one of those cubes that hold the chalk completely, except the small round opening to access it. Another issue of those that DO put the chalk face down is their "Pounding" it face down leaving a ring of chalk on the table!

This is funny. Actually a lot of my friends do this when playing also. My idea to why this is done is because they are thinking about their next shot and not about the placement of the chalk. If you notice most of the time when players put the chalk down they are not staring at where they are putting it because their eyes are on the playing field and focused only on that.

Ha, I actually got into this issue with a buddy of mine when he was shooting at my house just the other day, and he offered a pretty reasonable answer. He keeps the chalk face down on the railing because you don't have to rotate your wrist or the chalk to apply it to the tip. With the chalk face down you simply pick it up and apply it without having to rotate the cube. He joked about it being a symptom of laziness, but it is a more intuitive process than keeping it face up where you have to rotate the chalk to apply it. But it still drives me crazy when people place the chalk face down and get it all over the railing. Thanks for asking this question because it's been bugging me as well.

Just tell them one time.
Explain why and they will most likely never do it again.
Had the same thing happen to me. He never knew this was an issue until I pointed it out.

Don't be worried about offending them.
If they are your friend, this is not an issue.
If it is an issue for them and they like to get chalk all over your table then you are better off with them staying away.

It's one of mine too.I think the main reason people do It Is because nobody showed them the best way to put It on the table. It's a very hard habit to break when they've been doing It a long time. Some even chalk while holding their cue over the table. That sucks too.Not naming anyone but The best player In the world puts the chalk down on the side everytime.lol John B.

How would you propose to educate and pass this courtesy? Such as signs on the wall like No Gambling, No Masse Shots?

As it is for many on AZB. No need for apologies. It is one of my pet peeves too (of the MANY I have). It falls right into the category between the players that chalk their cues OVER the table and the ones that pick up the chalk (you know, the one piece that YOU need) and chalk their cue as they're leaving the table. But.....that's another thread in itself :sorry:.

Because it's easier.

Freddie <~~~ it's not right, but it is easier

Is it really easier? I chalk my cue and put the chalk back down so the powder does not go all over the rail. It doesn't take that much dexterity to do it. Seriously. One little spin and it goes down fine.

I will just ask him why he does this next time and see what he says. If he gets upset, what am I going to do? Life is too short.

I think you confirmed what I said. "One little spin" is more than no little spin. Again, I"m just answering your question as to why people do it. The easiest, ergonomically, efficiently, and yes, the laziest way to put the chalk down is exactly the way it's in your hand when you chalk. That would mean without spinning or manipulating, it would go chalk down.

It's also the messiest.

Freddie <~~~ we've all done it
