this cue is about 3 years old and i have replaced the butt cap that all by its self got a big crack in it. the owner of the cue said he just did a normal break and the shaft came apart in his hands ? what you would tell a customer that told you a story like that?

Looks like he broke it over his knee! Tell him the truth. There's no way it just came apart that way while he was breaking, unless he put it over his knee first!

he sent the shaft

to me by another friend, story was, he broke a normal break and the shaft just broke in half, yes he wants the shaft replaced for free
GOOD LUCK WITH THAT

THAT is exactly what I was thinking when I looked at the pics.

I would think that if it just broke in his hand, there would still be some pieces of it, in his hand!

Players that abuse their equipment are some of the greatest story tellers you will ever meet.
The butt-cap didn't develop a crack all by itself. He slammed the cue to the floor and expanded the bumper.
The shaft was broken over his knee.
Tell him to take his BS stories and put them where the sun don't shine.
You don't need this clown in your life.
Price for a new shaft is $200. Take it or leave it.

He's a bender. I bet there are all kinds of lines on the table where he breaks from with his "normal" break.

More like a slammer to me.
Benders break it by the joint b/c the hole on the shaft is the weakest point.
This looked like it was slammed above the joint.

Look at the shaft it is not a clean break of the shaft. The shaft has a ripping look to it like a tree does when a tornado rips and twist a tree, so this simply looks as if he broke it over his knee or across his shoulders by pulling force.

what i see in my mind

if you look at the 2nd photo you can see the longest piece of the break is bending away from the shaft. i see him trying to break really hard, moving his body forward, transferring all his weight to his bridge hand, digging the cue into the cloth and bringing the butt of the cue upward as he moves forward, " SNAP GOES THE SHAFT "

Chuck, it's really easy.
Normal wear and tear on no collar joints might split.
A split as in one line of separation.
Not shatter in different places.

Unless there was a video showing the shaft exploding during the break,
There would not be any warranty on that shaft.
Even if there was a video I probably wouldn't apply any warranty to this type of break

Tell him you'll need to examine the shaft in person. What we aren't seeing in these photos is the back side of the piece that has the extended "splinter". We're also not able to sight down the length of the two pieces.

If he broke this by snapping the shaft against the rail there will almost certainly be a dent at (or slightly above) the break point (on the side we can't see). If he broke it over his knee instead there's a good chance there will still be a noticeable bow to the shaft... or there may be other evidence of a temper break.

You need to closely examine the shaft before making a determination.
