Why are box cases out?

I know what you mean about box cases. I think they're very elegant, though maybe not as practical as the modern ones. I have several, including this four compartment O'Neill. A classic cue looks pretty good in it too.

Now yer just bein' mean...... :frown:

Nice cue/case combo!

As I have been returning to pool after 25 years I have been puzzled by the lack of nice box cases. I have always preferred them. Is there something evil about them that I missed? I wish I had several of this one.

The truth is the industry doesn't provide quality box cases like that one anymore. I suspect that case is an old McDermott Case, I can't remember who use to manufacture them but they also made them for Heubler Custom Cues.

I have customers all the time come into my retail store looking for similar well made box style cases. If they still made them they would sell, but some idiot at some point in the industry decided they were no longer marketable.

Hopefully that will change and they will start making them again because the market is there!!

Take care

FloridaFred was one of the last bastions of the box style case. His cases were very well made from some pretty nice exotics...very high-end. Even he stopped crafting them. There was a guy on here that also made them, and he was having trouble moving them as well.

The fact is that most have found the tube-style cases to fit their needs better. A close alternative to the box case would be a butterfly-styled case, as the basic principle is still the same, only in a lighter weight, easier to carry configuration.

It was about 1986 and I just bought a brand new Schon with 2 shafts for $525. I carried it in a box case. One night I fumbled opening it while standing and my brand new Schon tumbled out and onto the floor. Now it was not the cases fault that i was clumsy but that would not have happened with a tube case.Next day I bought a tube case.

which is why it reminds me of my Paradise. Back when Ebony and Ivory was not a song.

You're right, there are a lot of similarities between this cue and a classic Paradise design. Paradise used a lot of rings in his cues, both above the wrap and the butt sleeve. He also used blanks from Burton Spain, who made them exactly like this, 3/4 of the forearm, and close togehter at the wrap. He also used a lot of mother of pearl in both the points and butt sleeve. If I had to point out differences, Paradise would use an implex butt plate with no bumper, and he would use mostly white in the joint collars, either implex or phenolic. Otherwise, plenty of similarity to a Paradise.

I used to love my black pleather Huebler Box case before I knew of things like It's George tube cases and the cases that followed. My huebler held one shaft, one butt, a cube of chalk and half round tip file. It was solid looking with the metal corner supports and locked latches. I remember it being a special experience taking my bright blue meucci original euro series out of the maroon velvet molded interior. It was pretty sweet but I wouldn't trade in my lighter, stronger and bigger tube case for what I once had. I once accidentally due to a friend ran over my cue with my car in my leather It's George case and the case had just a few scratches that were easily polished out with the cue being completely safe inside. If that's not a testament to the protection of a good tube case especially one that vacuum seals then I don't know what is. I'm really not sure if my cue would have been as safe in the wood, pleather and metal reinforced Huebler case. I can tell you from my perception of the cases that I wouldn't even want to test the huebler in that way. I did really like the Huebler as a display case though and wouldn't mind having it for storage or just showing off a cue again.

Craig, I think O'neil made them for Huebler and Mcdermott. I love those cases, you could lay them on their sides and stand on them and not hurt them. I still buy them when I see them on ebay if they don't go to high. I've got three of the McDermott 1x2's and one of the 10x10 McDermotts.
Someone posted in the for sale section a while back that he was in touch with O'neil and they were making them again.

Some of the McDermott and Huebler cases were O'Neil as I said earlier....but not all. There were also some cheaper cases with those brands on them that really were not as good.

The O'Neil cases were and are great. I am not sure if they are making them again.

They do come up on Ebay. I would buy them if I had the cash. They are great cases.

I always had to stand the butt on the toe of my shoe when playing. Mine had a silver nickel joint, man I miss it.

I really dig the O'Neil dealer cases. They pop up for sale once in a while but not very often.

Marcus, It's been a while but Rodcar said he was in touch with O'neil and they were making cases again. He posted in the wanted for sale section about it, but like I said it was over a year ago.

I just dropped him a pm. I appreciate the heads up. I'm gonna do some googling as well. Thanks.
