Can someone explain why Earl used to just take one look and fire the ball in?

I don't understand.

Earl has won 5 US Opens and 3 World 9-Ball championships.

He usually just takes one look at the shot, 2 practice strokes, and then pumps the ball straight into the middle of the pocket.

And he was one of the deadliest shooters in the history of pool for many years, and he hasn't fallen too much off his peak yet.

What type of aiming system is that supposed to be? He just looks, gets down, and fires. I don't understand.

Help me.

when i looked at his oldest videos on youtube and compare them to present day videos, he looks like he changed his mechanics? it also looks to me like he played to win before and did nothing fancy or pretty and now he looks like he wants to get all fancy and pretty with those spin shots which are nice to watch but that wont win consistently...just my opinion

I remember him saying in the Break and Run video he's controlling his cue ball speed with spin.
Maybe the faster felt of today is the reason for his slightly slower pace and the use of more spin.

How much faster is the felt of today vs. yesteryear shown in the two videos you posted?

Ever since Earl said in the Break and Run videos that you can/should control speed with spin, I've been practicing certain shots I never did before working on this aspect of spin control.

I'm on 760 at home, so speed is a huge factor......inside english has a new part in my game the more I practice it:smile:

That's cuz he mastered that aiming system "Put it in the hole" that's on the internet

Every sport has a Natural player. Earl is that player.

C-man,
Are you kidding????

Earl spent UNBELIEVEABLE FREAKING HOURS to get where he is. He spent more than EVERYONE else (except maybe Efren..), so he's better than everyone else.

To explain him as "natural talent" is almost an insult to his incredible work ethic. JMO.

P.S. - when he explained how he learned to play, I was flabbergasted - he has the will to train.

I miss less balls when I play Earl's speed. I feel that my instinct is more accurate than my aim, especially when determining spin-speed-squirt on long shots. Maybe Earl is the same way. Tony Drago shoots very fast as well.

Earl really had early access to kamui chalk and the knew the most secret aiming system...

I meant no disrespect and I didn't say he didn't put in the time to be good. My opinion is he is a natural at pool and there isn't anything he can't do on a table.

3rd page.

you dont need to aim after playing for as long and as much as the pro's have. its all happening on a subconscious level. you only play in deadstroke when everything is being done by your subconscious. stop thinking so much and just SHOOT IT IN THE HOLE! lol

watch a lot of the top snooker players & many 1 stroke and fire. Study long study wrong.

In my opinion, the change is relevant because of the switch from Gold Crowns being the predominant table to Diamonds. Diamonds have a tighter pocket cut and this forces the players to adjust. It might be worth taking a second look if the pockets are tighter. I believe this has effected the mechanics of several players, but again its just my opinion.

You should know where your body and cue should be before you get down and what english so get down and Put It In The Hole... PITH aiming.

Train yourself with this practice.

Place the cue ball and a object ball about 12 inchs apart straight in line for any pocket.

next place 2 balls slightly behind the CUE Ball and apart jsut enough so you can stroke and pocket the object ball your straight inline with.

You should be able to walk behind the setup drop down never mioss a abeat and drop your cue between the 2 balls and pocket the object ball without moving those 2 balls your stroking thru.

If this doesnt work for you sorry but it is a good practice to straighten your stroke and make you start to see the shot before you get down and waste time looking and stroking 200 times before shooting.

JMO

The change to Diamond and swap to simonis likely changed everything... Told Greg Sullivan that if I was Earl I would already have had Guido come put concrete shoes on him and Ivan Lee..... Without the changes I think Earl would be something like the Emperor of China or something......
